A Morning Blaze.
Ou Thursday morning last, a little
aftsr nine o'clock, Wm. Blum's
blacksmith shop was divcovered to be
ou fire, aud but fur tbe prompt aud
persisleut work of the fire depart
ment would have bten eutirely con
sumed. The uuder part of the shop
it used by Mr Blum as a cow stable,
and mere ur less hay, fodder, etc ,
ha been stored there. Just bow the
fire caught is not known, but it is
presumed lhat a but coal lroiu the
forge iu soaie way got through the
floor iutn the hay. At any rate there
is where the dense volume of smoke
aud flame first appeared. The hose
were quickly brought into requisition
but the stinging cold weather had
contracted the hydrants so lhat they
had to be expanded with hot water
before the stream could be turned on,
hence a few moments weru lost in
getting the stream turned on. Ef
fective work was doue, but (he fire
was very stubborn, and twu streams
were necessary to subdue it, and the
building was saved, though damaged
about a hundred dollars' wcrth.
Mr. Blum was severely buined
about the face and bead in an effort
lo. rescue his cow, aud is now con
fined to the house hy his injuries, hut
is coming nut all right. The cow
was also very badly burned about the
head, hut will recover. A dozen or
more chickens were partially smoth
ered by the smoke, and bad to be
decapitated.
Mr Blum had no insurance on the
property.
