This is the first sidewalk to be erected in front of any of the new residences up town and we hope it will not be long until the sidewalk extends past all the residences in that part of the borough. The W. N. Y. & P. road started to run a Sunday train on this divis ion of tbe road last bunday and it will undoubtedly prove a success, as the first train was well patroaized. It is to be hoped tbat the road will keep tbe train running, and if the people along the line will patronize it, they undoubtedly will. Since babies must go to church to annoy the pastor and congregation, commend us to the New Castle Pres byterian church which has fitted up two rooms as a nursery and engaged two nurses with whom parents cau leave their babies while attending services, to the comfort and peace of mind ot all concerned. Chas. Lee's London Show was iu town Monday, and while it is an old fashioned wagon circus, they carry some very good people and give a good show, and our people have "no kick coming." Mr. Lee is a gentle man and the entire roster of bis show is composed of gentlemen, and while in this place they acted as gentlemen, and there are no fakirs or gamblers with tbe aggregation, which fact, alone, ought to be a drawing card. What might have been a very disastrous fire, but which wu6 discov ered iu time to prevent much damage occurred at tbe handle factory of Landers & Wyman at 2 o'clock, Sun day afternoon. The fire originated in the boiler house and caught from a pile of ashes which was just on the outside of the building. Tho mill is very near tbe hose room and a stream of water was soon playing on the flames. The mill is located just back nf the Presbyterian church, and had the Gre caught in the night there is very little doubt but that structure would have been destroyed. David Blum was quite severely burued about the ankles by jumping into the ash pile, but was uot seriously hurt, and as a whole, all turned out very luckily. Memorial Day. One moro Memorial day has been addod to the past, and the nation's dead wore appropriately honored In this place, and vicinity, with fitting ceremonies and soul-slirrlng eulogy. Capt. Geo. Stow Post had the manngoment of the affair in hand, and, although there were not nearly bo many people in town as on former occasions owing to the fact that a new post has recently been formed at Hickory which took a large number of the members of Stow post, the different foaturos of the program were excellently carried ont. The day opened fair and beautiful, but as the time approached for the exercises the heat became almost unbearable, but tho vets showed thoir old time bravery entered into tbe spirit of the occasion with thoir usual energy. In the morning a committee of six drove out from this place and decorated the graves of the veterans burled In the Evangelical cemetery in Klngsley town- sliip and Bartholomew cemetery in Green township. After their return an elabo rate dinner was served at the W. R. C. headquarters for which the ladies re ceived much praise from the veterans and their families. After a short rest and Bocial greeting all were ready to participate In the exer cises In Riverside comolery, which com menced at 2 o'clock, when the post started from thoir headquarters lead by the Tionesta Silver Cornet Band, and the Sunday schools of tbe different churches foil in line as they passed the different edifices. It is plainly discernible from year to year that it is but a matter of a short time until tho veterans of the late war will be no more, and consequently, taken as a whole, and considering circumstan ces, the celebration tbis year surpassed all efforts of the kind for a number of years past. A new summer resort has been opened at the old Cook homestead, Cooksburg, Forest county, by Mr. iiert Cook and Bister Mrs. Calvin, as will be eeen by an advertisement in another portion of tbis paper. A more desirable place could not be found in Pennsylvania for this pur pose thau the homestead of tbe Cook family, for nature has lavished ber beet efforts in beautifying tbe sur roundings. Numbers of fine springs of mineral water gusb from the sur rounding mountains, and musically trundle over pebbly beds tn mingle their waters ot those of tbe beautilul Clarion river, which flows peacefully aloug the southern edge nf the Cook estate, and where the finest of boat ing and fishing can he had. Fine tracts of timber, too, are in close proximity, in which the hunter can find enjoyment for bis skill. The Derrick's monthly oil report says: During the month of May 658 wells were completed in the oil fields of New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Southwestern Ohio; 119 of tbem were destitute of oil in pay ing qualities, while the total paying output for tbe last day of the mouth is placed at 7,380 barrels. Com pared with April tbis is an increase of 198 completed wells, 1,544 barrels new production aud 9 dry boles The work under way at the close of the month consisted of 597 rigs and 829 wells drilling, a gain of 136 rigs and 194 drilling over the report for April 30.
