Pay Tour Taxes.
Republicans, you should not over
look tbe important fact that Satur
day, October 6tb, will be tbe last
day for the payment of State or
County taxes io order to entitle you
to vote at tbe coming election. It
is of tbe greatest moment that uo
votes shall be lost to the cause of
protection this fall. Therefore, ev
ery Republican should see that bis
taxes are paid in ample time. Bet
ter attend to it no w and have it off
your mind.
Hits Is the Time.
This is tbe time for the best endea
vors of patriotism. If it shall grasp
the great opportunity now presented
the Republican party will enter upon
a new if not a grander career in tbe
redemption of the land from material
and industrial paralysis, from the
lack of confidence, which is the fath
er of panics, from that commercial
frenzy which drives solvency to the
wall, and from that unscrupulous
quality of demagogy which seeks to
array class against class, capital
against labor and section agaiust sec
tion. From speech of General Has
tings at League of Clubs convention
On Monday of this week General
Hastings started on a tour of the
State. He reaches this end of tbe
State in October, speaking at New
Castle on the 13th, Greenville on the
15th, Oil City on the 16th, Meadville
on the 17th and Erie on the 18th.
SEW BETHLEHEM HONORED.
A Loral Journal at Mr. Craig's Home
GItos Our Senatorial Candidate
A Hearty Endorsement.
On Thursday, August 23, the Re
publican Senatorial Conferees of tbe
Thirty-eighth Senatorial District met
at Ridgway and unanimously nomi
nated Clarion county's candidate, our
honored citizen, John F. Craig. Mr.
Craig was enthusiastically received by
our citizens upon bis return as tbe
next Senator from this district.
Mr. Craig is quite well kuown
throughout the district and is emi
nently fitted for that position: a
man now ripe in years and experience.
Mr. Craig is no politician, never hav
ing beld an office, we think, except
that of Poor Overseer, which office he
bas filled fur nearly twenty years suc
cessively, aod has never allowed any
worthy person to waut. He bas been
an extensive manufacturer aud mer
chant in this couuty and Armstrong
daring most of his life, having been
one of the builders and owners of tbe
well known Red Bank flouring mills
here, one of the most modern and
perfect plants of the kind in Western
Pennsylvania, and the manager ol
the wooleu mills here, whose products
have achieved a reputation under his
management not only at home but in
the markets of New York and Pitts
burg second to none. Mr. Craig is a
shrewd, practical business man and
has been very successful iu all bis un
dertakings. If you want to know
the kind of a man he is ask his em
ployees. Always honest, a gentleman
who understands his business and at
tends to it to the minutest details.
He has been easy and bas extended
an extensive credit to miners and la
borers of all classes and never dis
tressed any one by collecting an ac
count by execution or force.
He is a well educated man, being a
graduate of Jefferson College, aod
spent so rue years as a teacher io high
schools and academies. He was ad
mitted to tbe bar of Clarion county
in 1858, and, although not practicing,
his counsel and advice are sought for
by all classes and thought to be as
safe as any lawyer's. No man in our
section understands tbe wants of all
classes, the laboring men included,
better, and we know be is full of sym
pathy with them. He is a strong
Republican, but is always courteous
to Democrats, among whom he has
many warm friends. He is respected
by all classes, hence we think he is
the right kind of a man fur the place.
He is honest, practical, fearless, fair
and capable, and in every way fitted
for tbe high office to which be has
been nominated.

The phenomeual Republican ma
ority of over 38,000 in Maine pre
Bents one very significant feature.
While Cleaves (Rep.) has 38,084
over Johnson (Dera.), tbe vote for
Cleaves is an increase of only 1,309
over bis vole of 1812, but Johnson's
vote is 23,755 less than in 18'J2. The
logio of this fact is that the Democrats
are disgusted with the work aod rec
ord of their party in Congress aud
are staying at home in droves this
year. Franklin News.
In Vermont, in 1892, tbe Republi
cans polled 37,992 votes, or 68.12 per
cent of the whole ; in 1894 they poll
ed 42,780 votes or 74.30 per cent, of I
the whole. Iu 1892 the Democrats
polled 16,325 votes or 29.27 per cent,
of the whole; and in 1894 enly 14,
120 votes, or 24.53 per cent, of the
whole. The Republicans made a
gain of over 13 per ceut. and the
Democrats lost over 14 per cent, of I
their vote in 1892. In tbe State
of Maine tbe Republicans polled 62,-
923 votes in 1892, or 54.05 per cent.
of the whole ; in 1894 they polled
71,500 votes, or 64.42 per cent, of I
the whole. In 1892 tbe Democrats
polled 38,044 votes, or 41.26 percent.
of the whole, aod 1894 only 33,500
votes, or 30 18 per cent, of all tbe
votes cast. Tbis comparison is made
with tbe vote cast for President in
189'2. If compared with the vote for
Governor in 1890, a very much lar
ger Republican gain would be shown.
