IKIt (DITOR 4 PHOPBIITOH. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 18M. RErunLICAX TICKET. "TATK. Governor, DANIEL H. HASTINGS. Lieut. Govoruor, WALTER LYON. Auditor General, AMOS H. MY LIN. Secretary of Internal Affairs, JAMES W. LATTA. Congress-at-Largo, GALUSHA A. GROW, GEORGE F. HUFF. COl'NTV. Congress, W. C. ARNOLD, of Clearfield County. Assomblr, J. E. WENK. Associate Judge, J. A. NASH. District Attorney, P. M. CLARK. Coroner, J. W. MORROW. Republican Congressional Conferance. The Republican Congressional con ference of this, 28th, district was held at DuBois, Clearfield county, last Thursday, Aug. 16th, and resulted in the nomiuatioo of W. C. Arnold, of ' Clearfield county, on the 30th ballot. i The candidates were as follows: A. W. Cook of Forest; W. C. Arnold of Clearfield j J. J. Frazier of Clar- ion ; A. A. Clearwater of Elk. Cen- s tre county instructed fur E. A. Irwin ot Uearfield, but ha declined. Mr ook a conferees were Hons. J. B. At- new, J. J. Haight and C. A. Randall. On the 30th ballot the three conferees from Clearfield, the three from Elk, with Thomas of Clarion and Piatt of Centre, voted for Arnold, making the necessary eight votes, and he was de clared the nominee. We see it stated that the vote of Mr. Patrick of Clarion made the nomination of Arnold. This is a mistake. Ii was Mr. Thomas of Clarion who voted for Mr Arnold on the 30th ballot. Another alight die crepancy occurs in some of the pub lished reports to the effect that when it was suggested to make the nomioa lion unanimous, two of the Centre county conferees, Messrs. Malin and Dale, were silent and left the room. The facta were that the hour had grown late and trains were nearly due, and some bad left the room, but none in anything like a "huff." For. est county's representatives stood ready to endorse and acquiesce cheer fully in the convention's proceedings. Forest's Republicans are Republi cans at all tiroes, in defeat as well as in victory. Mr. Cook made an honorable fight for the nomination and has nothing to regret. Naturally the Republicans of our county feel much disappointed at bis defeat. Taking into consider ation bis standing as a business man and bis worth as a citizen, his frinds bad great hopes tbat he would be nominated, and had assurances to war rant them in the belief that be could have redeemed the district. Never theless they will be found ehoulder to sboulner with him in hearty support of the successful candidate, Mr. Ar nold, and with the other counties io the same mood his election is as sured. Don't put off registering till the last minute, Republicans. Attend to the matter right away and be on the safe side. The Republican Senatorial confer ence of this district, composed of Cameron, Clarion, Elk aod Forest counties, meets in Ridgway to-raor-row. After Wileon is defeated for re election to Congress, Cleveland can give him a foreign diplomatic posi tion. There are a few left for emer gencies such as Wilson's defeat cre ate. The Senate having passed Mr. Murphy's resolutiou, to the effect that it is deemed unwise to tamper any further with the tariff at this session and declaring for an early adjourn ment, puts a quietus on the "pop gun" bills passed by the house put ting sugar, iron ore, coal aod barbed wire ou the free list, And so tbe end of this congress is almost in sight. A Chinese Governor is offering large rewards for tbe heads of Japan ese naval officers. Tbe time has gone by for that sort of warfare. Io the good old days when heads were rated at so much per bead, it was quite in keeping to go chopping about with an aie to make pocket money when nations went to war, but things bave chauged. Just as soou as they go to chopping off beads in tbe Chioo-Ja- pau war the civilized nations will take a hand in tbe game aod matters will be brought to a crisis. Harris- lurg Telegraph. Forest Connty Road. The editor of the Clarlou Democrat has had a recent trial of the roads In our county and writes thus felicitously of the same : A recent trli overland throuirh a imr.il ly portion of Forest county convinces us m me people up mere know some thing about how to make food ronda anri how to keep them up. In the first place they do not have so many roads as to be found In most all other comities, and more attention can be given to, and more woric put on, what they have. All the roads seem to have been carefullv anr. veyed with a view to getting the best grades, a very necessarv thlncr In or.ru! road making. Then, If we understand the Forest county Idea a good bod of rocks and atones Is secured and the earth Is thrown over and made smooth and hard. Sumicient drainage is provided at both sidos of the road and the wir turnod away from it. Where It is neces sary to carry the water across the road, strong plank culverts of sufficient capac ity are sunk to a good depth under the level of the same, instead of having n. jolting and back-breaking "water- ur diagonally across. Being built on a grade the hollows are filled in anri the hills cut down. Altogether there seems to be some system in Forest coun ty road-maklno- anrl that. annrvi tr. k. lamentably lacking in most other places. A 1, . 1 . . . ... .u roaus are in lair condition at this sea son of the year, barring the dust, (which, mo way, mey ao not seem to have in Forest county) and it mav ha tlmv wrtnlrl not have seemed so good up there In a rainy season, but tho Impression receiv ed is that they would be good the year round. At any rate, to drive over them now, wun me attendant wild and beauti ful scenery to feast the eves nnon. delight Indeed. KEWST NOTES. The activity of the wlM-mttar strike at the McKeesport tube works has created a big demand for second band tubing and casing. A large number of old wells have been pulled out and the material shipped to the front to do duty in new wells. Bradford Era. The green goods men have again been beard from in this vicinity. During the week past, several Oil City men have been receiving circulars from New York parties sotting forth the "goodness" of their goods, but as yet no suckers have been throughly aired, but it would not .A . . . . . .... ud surprising io nave to chronicle the loss of some foolish victim's money in this way.
