"How many of Harrisburg's people

from the northwestern part of the
state? It was on a warm day that
they dropped into Harrisburg and
marched to Camp Curtin in be mus

Bucktails differed very much from
that of auy other troops that bad

been many companies in Zouave uni

green with all sorts of trimmings and
gold lace, and all of them quite fan

But the Bucktails were not fancy.
They looked business from the start.

The state of Washington has bIso
suflored greatly from forest fires, a
dispatch from Kelso saying: The
losses so far reported from the awful
forest fires raging throughout the
mountains of this section aggregate
about $125,000. The people of the
Slocum districts are left destitute and
without shelter or food. A relief
party has gone there, but it is feared
there will he great suffering before it

shirts, dark trousers, high boots and
light-colored slouch hats, one side

white buttons, and to this day in the

In October, 1802, that great Dem
ocratio authority, The Chicago Her
ald, exhorted the people to vote for
"a change," and in order to catch the
votes of the farmers it user? the fol
lowing bait :
"Vote for Cleveland and $1.25 for
wheat." Chicago Herald, 1892.
In less than two years we have seen
many "changes" that bave become
only too painfully familiar to the
people of the United States. It is
unneccessary to dwell upon these be
yond drawing tbe attention of the
farmer to tbe manner in which The
Chicago Herald's promise of $1.25 for
wheat has been fulfilled. This we do
by quoting from The Chicago Herald
Tariff reform is easy enough.
All that is necessary is for one Dem.
ocratic Senator to whisper that be
will not vote for any bill that does
not put a protective duty on sugar;
another to insist that he will support
no bill that is not for free lumber;
another to demand that collars and
cuffs must be protected or he will
bolt; another to exact a big protec
tion on rice for bis support, and sev
eral others to insist upon a duty on
coal and iron ore. Everybody gets
what he wants, and that's tariff re
form. Fhila. Press-

The fact will be noticed that Sen
ator Gorman is simply reaping the
promise made by the Democratic
leaders in 1802 to protect the sugar
trust, and for that promised protec
tion toe .Democratic committee in
of July 6, 1894, a telegram which it New York was furnished the cash
published as follows
Vandalia, III., July 5. Wheat
threshing is in full blast in Fayette
county. Six hundred bushels of the
new crop was brought to market to-
day aua sold at lorty-six cents per
bushel. lhe berry is exceptionally
with which to carry the Empire State.
Uufortunately for the good of the
country the information comes too
late. If the country had known it
then there might not be tbe distress
and misery that prevails to-day, be-
fine and weighs over sixty pounds to cause Democrats would uot bave been

in power.
The Democratic newspapers that
would read the distinguished Senator
from Maryland out of the party for
disagreeing with Cleveland, overlook
tbe fact that tbe Senator to-day is
etandiog upon the same ground ex
actly as that occupied by Cleveland,
until some freak of fancy suggested
to him tbe folly of writing tbe im
pertinent Wilson letter. Gorman
bas not deserted Democratic moor
ings as fixed by tbe tariff reform
Democrats, but be proves beyond tbe
preadventure of a doubt, from the
mouths of sucb good Democratic au
thority as the testy Harris of Ten
nessee, the firery and dramatic Vest,
of Missouri, aud the double-dyed free
trader Jones, of Arkansas, that the
Maryland Senator had every possi
ble reasou for believing that Cleve
land approved the course be aud
other conservative Senators are per
suing. The Seuator denied that his
party platform contained Cleveland's
declaration in favor of free raw ma
terials. As Mr. Gorman fult that he
was quite as well able to read tbe
platforms and say wbat they contain
ed as the man in the White House, it
could scarcely be expected that be
would, like the "cuckoos," desert
what be regarded as the wise and
prudent policy for party and country
and take up that of any other man,
even if that man did occupy the
highest station in the country. Gor
man is right. History will vindicate
him, as have already the most re
markable array of witnesses, called
on tbe floor of the Senate. Gorman
is ou top and likely to remain there.
It is now said that the local man
agers all over the country are insist
ing that that eminent actor, James
J. Corbett, shall fight Jackson or that
tbey will scale down bis percentage
as a theatrical attraction from 65 or
70 per cent, to 45 or 50. It will thus
be seen that tbe relatious of pugilism
to tbe stage are closer than most peo
ple have suspected.
