dj Ihtom extended to him, while
these who continued to be his friends
ave been persued with steady fer
vor. JNow the liowea want Wallace
and his friends to null "their chest-
uts out of the fire."
Thinos have quieted down in the
strike diatticts," and the indications
are that, while the strikes are not
11 over with, there will be no further
awlessnes, barring perhaps a little
scriraage here and there that may oo-
ur. In Chicago the trouble seems to
e about at an end, and it is
thought that in a few days
usiness of all kinds will be
running along as usual. The western
country is still somewhat turbulent,
but the authorities don't appear to be
fearing any serious outbreaks.
The Democrats of the Erie-Crawford
district bave re-nominated J. C.
Sibley for Congress. Mr. Sibley has
not yet given his consent.
The Slayer of Mayor Harrison of
Chicago, Patrick Eugene Prendergast,
paid the death peualty last Friday
morning when be was executed at
Chicago.
Abraham Lincoln's first speech
on the Tariff questioti was short and
to the point. He said that he did
not pretend to be learned in politi
cal economy, but he thought that he
koew enough to know that "when an
American paid twenty dollars for
steel to an English manufacturer,
America had the steel and England
bad the twenty dollars. But when
he paid twenty dollars for steel to an
American manufacturer, America
bad both the steel and the twenty
dollars." That was the sum and sub
stance of the tariff question as be
viewed it.
Chancey M. Dephew in speaking
of the assassination of Mayor Harri
son and President Caroot, bruisbed
aside the plea of the insanity of such
criminals, and the claim that they
should not be executed. He said
"Men who are sane enough to kill
deliberately are sane enough to be
killed judiciously."
A Cincinnati pafer devotes
column to proving that Speaker Crisp
has made a miserable failure of his
present term. From a Democratic
standpoint this is probably true, but
it should not be forgotten that he had
one gleam of common seuse when
be permitted his party to adopt the
principles of the Reed rules.
The increase in the virulence of
cholera in Russia, as reported in late
dispatches from that country, throws
an additional duty upon the custom
officials in the United States which it
should not be not be necessary to de
scribe. Immigrants from that couo
try, no matter whether they are
the higher or lower walks of Russian
society, should be inspected with uu
usual care. In this matter it will
not do take anything for granted.
The McKinley bill, with its high
protective duties, just yielded enough
revenue to pay the expenses of th
Government and provide a fund fo
the redemption of our outstanding
bonds. How can the Wilson bill
with greatly reduced schedules, in
crease (he revenue without greatly
increasing importation? With great
ly increased importation, bow can th
markets for home manufactures t
kept up? The Texas Miner, May 1

Nothing has been so extraordi
nary tu connection with toe Christian
Endeavor movement as the numerical
growth of the organization, which
during the past year, as shown at the
convention in Clevelaud, has been re
inforced by the addition of 7,395
companies an increase surpassing
that of the first eight years of the or
canizatioo's history. Such remarka
ble increase in membership is a euffi
cient answer to the frequent remark
of superficial observers that religion
is losing its hold upon the masses.
The truth is that the earnestness o
the eodeavors is the popular response.

Utah, so long barred out of the
Union by the Republicans because of
its polygamy, is now admitted on
trust, for there is nc doubt that Pres
ident Cleveland will sign the admiss
ion bill passed by both houses of
Congress. Once in the Union the
majority of the people can enact what
laws they please, and it is folly to
presume that these laws will bea
severely on polygamy. There is
grave probability that we will have a
sovereign State secure from Congress
loual interference with a majority
friendly to polygamy, aud with its
Legislature and courts giving couute
nance and support to that ancient
twin relic with slavery of a barbar
ous period in the world's civilization
Phila. Press.
The Republican observes with
more than ordinary pleasure that
Hon. Lucius Rogers, of Kane, Pa.,
is prominently mentioned as the suc
cessor of Col. Grier as superinten
dent of public printing and binding,
under our next Governor, General
Hastings. Surely no belter selection
could be made from the standpoint of
personal fitness, the law requiring
that the office must be filled by a
practical priotcr, and the appoint
ment of Mr. Rogers would be a just
recoguization, not only of the north
western portion of the State, but of
one of its most sturdy and prominent
Republicans as well, and at once pop
ular with the party of this section.
