along. The carpenters began a week
ago, and the building is already un
der roof.
The showers of the past fow
days were most welcome visitors
to this section, and freshened up
vegetation wonderfully. The warm
weather since has given a great boom
to crops of all sorts.
W. B. Teed, of White Ash,
Crawford county, was among former
Forest county friends a part of last
week. Mr. Teed tells us that he
farms for pleasure and works at the
insurance business for exeroise.
Joseph Adamson Esq., of Phila
delphia, was here on business during
a part of last week, and met many of
his old friends in this vicinity. The
Republican acknowledges a very
pleasant visit from him during his
stay.
H. J. Hopkins has disposed of
his orange groves in Florida, reserv
ing ooly (en acres of unimproved land
along Lake Weir just enough to
claim fishiog ground and a place to
stay, for himself and Pleasantville
friends. Record.
Dr. Siggins was called to Ripley,
N. Y., last week by the death of his
brother-in-law, W. C. Barnes, who
had suffered for some time by a par
alylio stroke. Mr. Barues was favor
ably known to a number of our cit
izens, he having visited here on sev
eral occasions.
Some enterprising sneak thief,
who didn't believe in half way doing
of things, stole sixty young chickens
from Squire Sotley's hennery one
night last week, during the tempora
rv absence of the family. The
Squire should load a few of his chick
ens with dyoaraite.
The Road Cotnmissoners of
Kiogsley township have lately refit
ted and replaced all guide boards in
their township, and now they want it
distinctly understood that any inter
ference with these boards will be
puuiehed to tho full extent of the
law. And thev mean business.
-Win. Barnes of Buffalo, N. Y.,
is paying a visit to nis old comraae
in arras. S. S. Canfield. They were
members of Co. II, 100th N. Y
Vols., and when "Rhel" got a whack
from a rebel bullet Mr. Barnes carried
him off the field, which kindness is
remembered to this day by our heavy
weight liveryman.

proprietor of the store formerly con
ducted by Hunter & Morgan in the
Raab building. John intends keep
iog a nice supply of everything in bis
line fresh, tastey, aod hopes by strict

to merit a continuance of the liberal

-Joseph A. Boyd has moved to
Leechburg, Armstrong county, where
he and Will Kilmer of this place
have purchased a mercbantile estab
lishment. Mr. and Mrs. Boyd bear
with them the best wishes of all their
Tionesta friends for a prosperous aod
happy future in their new borne. Mr,
Kilmer will remain at his old place,
with G. W. Robinson, for a while yet,
We are in receipt of a handsome
little book entitled "Niagara in 94,"
which has been published by the Pas
senger Department of the W. N. Y,
& P. R. R., for free distribution
among the patrons of Niagara Falls
excursions run by that company this
season. These books can be had on

Charles Smith, Turk Fehlmau,
Con Lesser and J. R. Bairstow, four
jolly fishermeu from Warren, were in
town Friday last, going home at 4:15
p. m. They had just completed a
wetk's troutiog trip extending from
Sheffield to Tionesta, floating down
the oreek in a covered boat in which
they ate and slept, and fishing the
trout streams as tbey came to them.
Good catches were made and the
boys acquired enough sunburn to
last them through the season.

Killed by the Cars.
Albert VanEvery was killed Mon
day by the passenger train which
pastes Tionesta at noon. The man
had lived at East Hickory for about
three months and had been in the
employ of Wheeler fc Dusenbury,
He was on his way to this place to
give a sparing and wrestling exhibi
tion, and was accompanied by his
son, aged 10 yeats, and a tnond
named Wiufield Jonas. At Hickory
station the train was reported some
what late and the three started to
walk down on the track. When
nearly opposite George King's place,
about a mile below the station, they
were overtaken by the storm which
came up about noou. In the midst
of this storm the train overtook
them aod they did not hear it, nor
did the engineer see the men, until
within a few feet of them. The boy
and Jonas jumped off the track just
in time to save themselves, but Vhd
Every was struck and instantly kill
ed. The body, which was brought to
the station at this place on the train,
was not badly mangled aud showed
evidence of the man s having at
tempted to escape from the fact that
only the bones of his right leg below
the knee were broken, he having been
caught by the left side of the engiue.
The back of his skull was completely
crushed, bis head having struck the
cross-beams of the eugine.
In the absence of Coroner D. W.
Clark, Justice S. J. ILetley empaneled
jury and held an inquest on the
body Monday afternoon, the verdict
of which is given below.
VanEvery formerly lived at Pitts-
field, Warren county, Pa., where he
had owned a house and lot which he
Bold about 5 months ago. He had
left East Hickory and was moving to
Ohio, whither he had already shipped
his household goods. His age was
about 40 years. The body was given
in charge of Undertaker llahlet by
the authorities, aod yesterday morn
ing was taken to Hickory for burial.

was struck by a passenger train running

monly know as train 81, and running
upon regular schedule, under the charge
of C. F. Brigham, Engineer, and Jack
Walsh. Conductor. And we do tind that
the said Albert VanEvery came to his
death by injuries received in the man
ner aforesaid, and we do exonerate the
engineer and conductor of said train, and
the railroad company irom any uiame,
believing that upon their part the acci
dent was unavoidable.
In witness whereof, as well tho afore
said Coroner, the Jurors aforesaid have
to this inquisition put their lianas and
seals ou the day and year and at the
place above mentioned.

The Fourth in Tionesta.
At a meeting held by the citizens
Monday night reports from commit
tees appointed previously were heard,
looking to a proper celebration of the
Fourth in Tionesta. Other commit
tees were appointed, and thiogs in
general put in motion for a rousing
old Fourth. It was decided to have
a number of interesting races along
with the general attractions, among
which might be roeutioned, a fire
man's hose race, bicycle race, potato,
hurdle and sack races, foot races for
boys and men, free for all, aud others
that may be added, all with good
prizes attached. At 0 o'clock in the
morning the grand street parade
beaded by the Tionesta silver cornet
band will take place, in which the
"fautastics" will surely participate.
Good music duriug the day. A
hundred-font pavillion has been erect
ed in one of the shady groves at the
upper end of town, and all who wish
can enjoy the dance during the day
aud eveniog. The complete program
nf will be announced as soon as the
committee in charge can get it ar
ranged. Come and eojoy yourself.

Henry Groce lias the Job of hauling the
ties and hardwood lumber from the Hun
ter tract, In Boom hollow, to Ross run.
They wore sawed last summer and are,
the property of Grant Erb, of West Hick
ory. "Pap" will soon have the job com
pleted and ready for another one.
C. E. Dottercr moved to Queen City on
Tuosday, whore he has a job. We aro
sorry to lose you, Charles, but our loss
will be someone clso's gain.
As the ball season is last ripening the
boys on tho east side are in a mood to
play the west aiders a match game some
time soon. The west sido boys all think
they can play ball, and when the boys get
togothor some sport may be looked for.
The beautiful rain of Monday afternoon
caused a smile to lighten up the counte
nances of all tho citizens in this proxim
ity. We had just about given up living
since the thaw, but thanks lo the rain, it
Is much cooler since.
A daughter was born at the home of
Richard Fair a weok ago.
R. K. Grove and wife visited at L. Pier
son's over Sunday.
Win. Grant has moved his family from
Salmon creek to Porkey, where he will
be employed on the Proper Reserve oil
lease.
Messrs. Baker, Eamberton .and Rick
ard.s, of Franklin, who were reported as
fishing In Forest county, returned home
on last Wednesday with 47U trout to their
credit. The total weight of the beauts
was 20 pounds.
Wm. Tobey startod for York State on
Tuesday morning, driving W. A. Kribbs'
ponies up and back. Mr. T.'s weight
makes a pretty good jag for tlio little an
imals. Miss Ada Hilling returned home to

Accounts from the Supreme Lodge,
A. O. U. W., in session at San Francisco,
represent that the growth of that order
in the past year has been highly satisfac
tory. Up to January last the immense
um of $51,000,000 has been paid to bene
flciarios. The total number of lodgos at
that date was 4,831, with a membership of
328,775.
A small yollow worm about an inch
long, and resembling the black-thou-
sand-Ieggor, which is usually found in
docayed timber, has appeared in corn
fields in Iowa and is creating havoc with
that crop. It is thought to be a worm
that thrives only in extremely dry sea
sous. It is eating the roots of the corn
and boring into the kernels in the ground,
killing the germs, says an exchange.
James Watt, Jr., of this city, who vol
unteered to nurse the family of James
Perry, of Cranberry tp., through the dip
theria, was taken with the disease on
Thursday. His physician hopes that the
progress of the disease may be stayed by
careful nursing. Edward Perry, aged 22,
has been taken down with diptheria of
malignant typo. Out ot the 13 members
of the Perry family attacked, three have
died, and seven are improving or al

her maiduu name being Merchant. De
cember 29, 1803, she was united in mar
riage with Lyman S. Combs. May 18,
lStil, she united with tlio Gorman Re
formed Church, in which faith she lived
aud died. Doath came suddenly, paral
ysis being the cause, but the grim mes
senger did not find her unprepared. Kho
leaves to mourn hor death, a husband
and five children, to whom she was a
loving wife and fond mother, while tho
community sustains the loss of a kind
and generous neighbor.
