Car ter's big stock farm, situated a mile be low West Hickory, called at tLe Republi can office last week. As a sample of the big things they are producing upon what Mr. Carter very appropriately calls "Riv erside Faim," Mr. Paul told us of a calf that was ."recently dropped, which weighed 116 pounds at birth. It is of the Polled Angus breed. We are in rocelpt of part one of "The Century War Boob," which thePhiladel- phia Inquirer is oflerlng to to its readers lUr UliO CUUUUU IIVIII 1U OUIIUUV tI IIVO from Its dailv edition, toirother with ten cents for each part. It is a collection of war articles in twenty parts; writton by 1 the leading Generals on both sides, pro fusely illustrated, aud would make a val uable addition to any library. J. F. Overlander has sold the old Hunter grist mill across the river, to Wagner Brothers, of Titusville, who we are informed will take out all the old and out in a complete new outfit of I modern patorn, roller process machinery. We are glad to note this contemplated imnrovement. as the farmers living in this vicinity have long deplored the re- . . , . in moieness oi a iirsi class gnsi uuii. No matter how hard the tunes are there Is alwavs something doinir in Tio- nesta in the way of improvements, and this summer will be no exception. In addition to tbo new store buildiug of I G. W. Bovard's, Moses Hopler and John Saylor will each build a new house on Church street, betweeu the lock-up and Philip Emert's residence, and which they expect to be ready for occupancy by the end of two months. Speaking of the lockup ; wouldn't it be a good idea if tho boro Dad's would take part of the money some of us poor cusses had to pay last winter for having the snow cleaned from our walks, aud put a coat of weather boarding and about two of paint (red would be a good color) on it T A little improvement on the part of tho boro would be in keeping with the geueral air of prosperity at present evi denced in that neighborhood. John Willings, well known to many of our rivermen, and a resident of the third ward, Oil City, was severely injur ed on Main street, that city, on Saturday afternoon last. The Derrick says, for some time past he has been suffering from attacks of dizziness and while cross ing the Lake Shore track Saturday after noon, be was taken with an unusually sovore attack, that caused him to fall. His head struck the iron rail, adeopgash was cut above the eye and he was knock ed senseless. Geo. W. Bovard has given tho con tract for a new store building to be built upon the site of the one burned three years ago. ' It will be 24x65 and two stories high. Pat Joyco has tho contract for the stonework, and Goo. W. Sawyer for the woodwork, which is equivalent to saying that everything from cellar to garret will be finished in a first class manner. The work will be pushed rap idly forward, and Mr. Bovard expects by the first of July, to be again accupying his own premises. Instructions have beeu issued by the W. N. Y. A P. railroad officials, to all employes of the company, requiring them to report auy violations of the fish or game laws, that may come to their no tice. The presout laws aro reasonably , . . good and should receive the support of all lovers of the rod and gun, for with- out B proper observance of tho close sna- sou, and fair methods of taking game and lish, our streams and forests would soon afford no sport. Private citizens for obvious reasons aro very loth to make inlormatiou against neighbors and ac quaintances, but the Railroad Companies can do so without fear or favor. From the creek bridge to the cemete ry and as far east as you want to go, Tio nesta is one of the best lighted towns In the country, and the only improvement that could be suggested at this time is a now torch on Bridge fctreet, midway be tween Elm and the river. This Is one of the most important streets in town aud should be well lighted. Mr. Alex Whltohlll wont down to Pittsburg yesterday, where he was to Join the Sioux City Base Ball club, and play bis first game In the box to-day. Drookville Republican. The Sioux's got the scalps of the Pittsburg's in two of the three games played. Mr. Whltehill pitched In the last game of the series which resulted In a score of 3 to 2 in fa vor of Sioux City. The Sunday Dis patrA says: "Whitehill pitched an excel lent game. Ho displayed great speed and bad fine control of the ball. The crowd and home players tried to rattle him, but he showed remarkable coolness and nerve and performed like a veteran." All of which will please Alex's many ad mirers In Tionesta. The Bradford brick beats the world for strength. Estrada and G ray , of Pitts burg, who made a test of the brick man ufactured by the Alumina Shale Brick Company, of this city, of which Mr. L. W. Young is manager, report that tho re sults obtained are remarkablo. There are ne records of any brick tests giving such high results. This is important in view of the fact that the bills that sur round this city abound in alumina shales that combine all the desirable qualities for a high grade of bricks. The brick made from this clay are not only strong but they are superior in finish to brick made elsewhere. There are three plants already engaged in manufacturing brick and the number will increaso as the quality of the brick becomes known to the builders. Bradford correspondence to Oil City Derrick. The sample brick made from the Tionesta shale is consid ered of even greater strength than tho Bradford article and Is of better color. Stewarts Rnn.
