ed their hotels at the cost of thou
sands of dollars, taking it for granted

continue. Their failure to obtain li
cense alarmed creditors, who have i
sued executions aggregating $73,467.
Among the many serious and diffi
cult problems confronting tbe Amer
lean people at this time, one of tbe
most important ia tbat of iroraigra
tion. It ia a fact patent to all tbat i
large proportion of tbe immigraota
now daily landing upon our shores
are not such as will make desirable
citizens. Ii,very honest, intelligent,
industroua law abidiDg man come
from whence he may, should be
welcomed to nur shores. He will
add to our civilization and prosperity.
But we cannot hope to assimilate tbe
mass of iguorance, crime, fifth and
pauperism daily dumped upon our
soil from southern Europe. Their
pesence ia a danger, which grows as
tbe number increases. This problem
is so complicated that no one can
hope for a perfect solution all at once.
Any step in tbat direction should re
ceive onr hearty indorsement. Tbe
Stone bill providing for consular in
spection on the other side, is such a
step. There ia no reason why the
immigrant should come 4,000 miles
to determine whether be is admissa
or not. It ia much better for bim to
know tbat before be starts, and that
fact can certainly be more accurately
ascertained where he lives than on tbe
other side of the globe. It is to be
hoped tbat this measure shall become
a law, and to that end every citizen
abould lend bia influence.
A good story is told on Col. Breck
inridge, which seems to confirm the
saying "like father, like son." It
seems that the defendant in tbe Pol
lard breach of promise case baa a
family of grown-up children, three
girU and two boys. One of the lat
ter is a partner in his fatber'a law
practice and has been active in tak
ing depositions tor tbe defense. He
nas aowed a good many wild oats,
but not so many as bid brother, who
is described as about tbe wildest and
most reckless youth in tbe blue-grass
region. Not long before tbe present
