The Warren Mail contains this grace

Prophet nicks predicts storminess
from April 5th to 0th, and cold and freez
ing iu the wake of the storms as they
pass eastward. Along about 12th and
13th reactionary storms may be expect
edrain, bail, thunder and wind. Cold
weather may be looked for about the
14th. The 17th to 21st constitutes the
next storm period. - Cool nights with
frosts will follow all these disturbances.
Tho 24th and 25th are reactionary storm
centers, and will be followed also with
frost. The month will end with a grow
ing warm wave, and with storms ad
vancing from western extremes of the
country.
. - i
-i ne largest ran, so saia Dy oia lum

Tionesta creek was piloted down one
day last week by Stephen Cooper, from
the mouth of Fools creek. It contained
nearly 70,000 feet of lumber, and top
loaded with several thousand feet of boat
siding; was 24 feet wide and 23 courses
deep. Two of Balltown's brave young
ladies, Misses Gertie Griflin and Nellie
Jackson, took passage on the raft, and
rode over all the dams along,.the creek,
until Nebraska was reached, when the
pilot's better Judgment prevailed upon
them to leave the craft, and 'twas well
they did, for in passing nnder the newly
erected bridge below the mill some of the
"stagging" was knocked down and al
most completely covered the raft. This
was too much for the forward hands and
theyjumped off to save themselves, and
pilot Cooper was left to manage things
from that on.
The rafting season on Tionesta creok
is already about over for this year. Time
was when the breaking up of the winter
ice marked the beginning of the rafting
business and the end came only when the
summer's sun licked up the waters and
made running impossible. But those
were the halcyon days of the lumbering
Industry along the "Tionesta," and
they'll never come again ; at least not as
any one now on the sod knows of. Twen
ty board and 18 timber rafts is the out
put from Salmon creek this year, while
further up the creek, Cooper Bros., and
W hite it Co. have each a number of
pieces out. Flynn & Weller cut
out a small "Allegbeoy" on the
Whiteman t Bauer mill above Newtown,
and are now on the way to market with
it. So we say. the "rafting" is all over
with this season. There are three priuci
pal reasons for this shortness of season
Scarcity of timber, shipment by rail, and
the building ot boats and barges. 'Tls
sad to reflect that the first of these rea
sons should exist, but that don't help the
matter any. Facta are fuels uo matter
how stubborn.
Any sudden chaage iu the condition
