County Treasurer Jamieson pub ishes his list of tax sales this week, which take place on the second Mon day of June. The number of pieces is about the same as usual in the neighborhood of 400 some of which have appeared nu the list biennially for the past twenty-six years to our personal knowledge. Brown stockings complete tbe outfit A Balltown correspondent writes: "A basket social, under tha management of Misses Dove Mitchell and Violetta McGaffigan, was held in Porkey Hall on the 9th inst., for tbe benefit of Rev Wbippo. It was a grand affair, and everything passed off pleasantly. Proceeds, $14 00. Have another, girls, before we boys have our neckties worn out." On April 3, the spring term will open at tbe Clarion Normal school. The outlook is said tc be encouraging for a large attendance. The school is deservedly popular, and its growth has been wonderful. Its reputation has beeu earned by the excellent methods and 'the earnestness of its teachers. The popularity of the school is growing prodigiously. Ex Sheriff Osgood has taken the job of runniug tbe timber from that place and has already begun rafting it. Last Saturday our townsman, Mr. Geo. W. Duukle received a mes sage from tbe family of bis brother, Stmuel, of Helen Furnace, Clarion county, who had died suddenly tbat day. The wife and two of the chil dren bad goue to a neighbors tor a short visit and on returning found the husband and father dead. Duriug the fore part of tbe winter Mr. Dun kle had suffered a very severe attack uf tbe grip from which be bad never fully recovered. He was aged about 44 years, aud besides the wife leaves a family of five children. Tbe fu neral took place on Sunday last. Cbas. Wbiteraan has had a wag on built at Scowden & Clark's facto ry for bis special purpose, aud will hereafter take his goods with him on bis trips through the country. A FREIGHT TRAIN WRIX'RGD. Fireman John Martin Mlssinir, and 14 Cars Burned. Train No. 98on the River division of the W. N. Y. P. was wrecked at Wal nut Bend, 7 miles above Oil City at 12:25 Friday morning last. The train left Oil City at II o'clock Thursday night, tlio crow being conductor John Fltzgibbons, flagman W. Woods, middle braketnan Michael Hannon, head brakeman Harry Carr, onglnoer Wm. Sitting, and firoman John Martin. When a fow rods above Walnut Bend station the engine left the track, having run Into a large oak log which had slid down off the side hill, and become firmly fastened across the track, and fourteen cars went over tbe embank ment, some 12 foet high. The engine plunged into the rivor which at tbe time was unusually high, and swift at that point. Brakeman Carr was on tha en gine with Engineer Sittlg and Fireman Martin j both of the former wore thrown Into the river and, boing good swimmers, made their escape. It is thought beyond doubt that Martin was also thrown into the river, and boing unable to swim, was drowned ; at any rate nothing has been found of him except his bat, which would bear out the theory of drowning. The reat of the crew escaped serious injury, but almost the entire train was consumed by fire, tbe oil tanks catching from the engine furnace. Tbe missing fireman is about 23 years old, and the son of a widow and the brother of Michael Martin, manager of the Wells, Fargo Express company's of fice in Oil City. He was noted among his fellow workmen a. a young man of in dustrious, atefdy habits and light-hearted nature, and was a favorite with all. Tbe prompt work of the wrecking crew made it possible for all trains to be run ning on time by noon of Friday, but it will be sevoral days before the wreckage Is all cleared away, and the loss to the railroad company will be several thous and dollars. KellettTille. Rafting has commenced at the several places around here and the lumbermen have a 2X4 smile on their countenances. Several rafts from Fools Creek and Foxes Mills, have passed here during the latter part of last week. On last Tues day evening at 6 o'clock, Chas. Pope was stricken with a paralytic fit which ren dered him unconclous for 12 hours. He was properly attended by Dr. Barber who soon brought relief to his sufferings. James Walters, who resides on the Luther Johnson farm, is soon to leave us and Join other friends at Tidloute. Jim and family will be greatly missed. Chas. S. Andrews came home on Thurs day from Columbus, Ohio, where he has boon a medical student at the Columbus Medical college. The K. O. T. Matthew Cox, of Newtown Mills, started to his former home, Boston, on Saturday. Well No. 05, on the Cook lease, at Mayburg, was drilled in one day last week, and after shooting and tubing the same it started to flow at a 200-barrel rate. Ac cording to the Buffalo Courier their were nine new cases in Jamestown last week and two deaths, making over 200 doaths from this fatal disease in the past eight mourns. A resident of Sharon ordered a stove at the foundry in that place last week. Tbe pig iron was melted and cast, the frame put together, polished, set up in the pur chaser's bouse and a fire started in it in less than three hours from the time be gave the order. Postmasters in the larger cities are al lowed from $8 to f 10 a yoar for "cat meat," to be fed to the official pussies whose business it is to catch the rats and mica that would otherwise destroy the mail sacks stored in the basement of the large post offices each night.
