The merciful, man is merciful to his beasts, but when a man will leave a team standing in the cold for an hour after having been heated up with fast driving ought to have a law constructed mercy forced upon him. It is a policeman, a chape rons, a defender of your rights, and a board of health. It is an honest advisoi. It warns you against frauds, and tells you the best place to buy goods. It rejoices with you when you are glad and mourns with you when you need a comforter. It s your guardian angel of your moral, otellectual and physicial health. It sticketh closer than a brother. Therefore remember and appreciate it. Rev. Irl R. Hicks gives the fol lowing forecasts of the weather for January 1894: The new year will open cold, clearing weather in all central and western parts, reactionary disturbances having passed to the At lantic By the 3d it will change to warmer with storm movements in sight on tbe evening of tbe 4th. Cold and storms will follow, the month going out with a cold wave. If in nothing else a visit to the school will pay you in reviving old re collections. And then it will furnish you for a good answer for your boy when he complains about having to go to scboool, hy drawing a contrast between tbe old rickety school house, slab seats, paper windows, wood fiie place, crusty old school master witb specs and ratan when you went to school, and tbe well ventilated, well lighted, well seated school rooms, with a charming young teacher full f life using the best methods of teaching, that have fallen to the lot of the present generation of youth. How you will eojoy this, and bow de lighted your boy will be to hear it. Let some one or more persons investigate tbe matter, and see what arrangements can be made for it. Tionesta is not up to her priviledges in these matters. We have all the two for five cent shows and pateut medicine troops we need, and more too. Why not expeod tbe money squandered in these in paying for some thing of real worth. A little nonsense occasionally is all right but where it is all nonsence at the ex pense of sense it is not. Who will make a move in this? Au exchange publishes the fol lowing in regard to damages arising from accidents through defective side walks which ought to prevent any op position to a borough ordinance, re quiring them to be kept in proper condition : If property holders under stood tbe responsibility resting upon them in the care of sidewalks there would be a marked improvement in thoir condition. Too many people iraagiue that the borough is responsi ble for damages that may accrue by reason of an injury being sustained on account of a defective sidewalk. The law lays the responsibility on the property owner, aud where be has been notified by tbe borough authori ties to repair and defect aud an acci dent results by reason of neglect to repair the same damages can be re covered from him. Even if a suit be brought agaiuut tbe borough and damages recovered agaiost it, the municipality can io turn recover from the property owner. Christmas Is Coiulnir. And so am I. It Scarcely a day passes that some anarchist does not make use of hit fearful explosive bombs causing tbe destruction of life and property. Europe is terrified by their work. France bas taken official knowledge of them since the disaster in tbe Chamber of Deputies and has started movement toward their expulsion. It begins to look now as if every other nation would have to do some thing of the same sort. Such fiend ish work ought to receive the se verest punishment. The lives of public men and of many private cit izens are in constant danger from the lawless creatures. They want to eat the bread of idleness, being as a rule too lazy to work. Tbeir cry of oppression is only a thin subterfuge to cover the heinousness of their crimes. it some ot their leaders were arrested and dealt with properly it would have a strong tendency to check them, for the majority are led by a few idle, worthless, lawless per sons who work upon tbe credulity of the tguorant and make them their tools. These not only do tbe uelv work advocated by their leaders but sre sufficiently liberal in tbeir tup- port of these to make it an object to be an agitator. What do they care for tbe laboring mau if they can get an easy living at tbeir expense? If all these blood thirsty, fire eating, blatant moathed anarchists were col lected from every country on an is land somewhere by themselves the world could withstand with pleasure the shock of au earthquak arising from tbe explosion of bombs that would anoihilnte tbe island. Ths re-appearance of the "grip" rails to mind the experience of Jas. O. Jones, publisher of the Leader, Mexia, Texas. Ho was sick In bed for ten days with tbe grip during its prevalence a year or two ago. Later in the Beason be had a second attack. He says : In the later case I used Chamberlain's Cough Remedy and with considerable success, I think, only being in bed a little over two daya. Tbe second attack, I am satisfied, would have been equally as bad as the first, but for the use of this romedy." It should be born in mind that the grip is much the sauie as a very severe cold and requires precisely the same treatment.
