THE FOREST REPUBLICAN. 4. t. WINK, Editor 4 Proprietor. WEDNESDAY, NOVEM BER 20, 18PS. Tlie Tariff Wreckers at Work. The new tariff bill that has been Id procens of incubation by tha Deni cratio ways 'and means committee bas at last been given to the public, and a sorry mess they've made of it for Americrican industries. The protective features of the MrKinley bill have been entirely wiped out, and the free list embraces about ev erything that is any account to our home laboring men. Here it is about the size of it : Wool, iron ore, coal, binding twine, lumber, lead ore, salt, free stone, granite, sandsloue, limestone, and other building or monumental stone, except marble, manufactured or un dressed grind-stones, finishing or un finished, copper imported in the form of ores, regulus of copper and black or course copper and copper cement, blue vitriol or sulphate of copper, all preparations of coal tar, not colors or dyes, boras, crude or borate of soda, or borate of mine, coloring for bran dy, wine, beer or other liquors; cop peras or sulphate of iron, iodine, olive oil, indigo, sponges, aluminum, in crude form, allers of any kind in which aluminum is the component material or chief value, antimony, as regulus of metal; metallic mineral substances in a crude state, and me tals nowrougbt; flax straw, flax, pices ground or powdered cayenne pepper, sage; timber hewu and saw ed and timber used for spars in build ing wharves, timber squared or sided, boards, planks, deals anr1 other lum ber of hemlock, white wood, syca more, white pine and bass wood not planed or finished ; cotton ties, choc olate or lead ore. In One Tear. The Holyoke (Mass.) Free Presg, a Democratio organ printed in a town that is kept up by the many mills within its limits baa left the Demo cratic party, and in doing so it flings thia parting shot at the starvation Democracy : "The Democratio party has now bad absolute control of the affairs of the nation for seven months, and the result is the most sorrowful time the cation ever saw. Business paralyzed, industries shut down, wages cut down, a financial panic, such a etiogency in the money market that bank after bank business bouse after business bouse have had to close their doors, hundreds of thousands out of work A year ago every mill in the city was rushed with orders. They could not produce fast enough for the demand To-day there is scarcely a mill iu the city that is running full time; and of the large mills there is but one that baa not gone half time or cut wages 10 per cent, or more. An awful change for a year I "This frightful coodition of affairs appeals thoroughly to the American citizen, who has a powerful weapon iu his band the ballot. It was the bal lot that brought about this great change from prosperly to poverty; trotn industrial activity to industrial atagoation ; from financial ascendan cy to financial depression. The pres ent industrial stagnation is without any doubt the result of the free trade plank that was inserted in the Demo, cratio national platform of 1892 That platform denounced the protec tive tariff policy under which the ua tioo bas grown and developed from a child to a giant, and declared that if the people entrusted the offices of the nation in its bands it would wipe out every trace of that policy." The Free Press is in good company Thousands of other Democrats have left tha old wreck, and they will never return. The party is doomed forever. In oue year it has wrecked not ouly the business of the nation but itself as a political organization Hon. Jeremiah Rusk, ex-secreia- ry of agriculture died at Viroqua, Wis, Nov. 21. Gen. Rusk had been seriously ill for about ten days. He rose to the rank of brigadier general in the late war, served a term iu the legislature, was bank controller of Wisconsin for two terms, was elected to Congress three times, and later was elected Governor of Wisconsin fir three successive terms. He was the first secretary of agriculture being appointed by President Harrison when the office was established. His age was C3 years. Geu. Rusk was the idol of his state, and during his term in the agricultural department en deared himself greatly with the American people. The total official vote irr Kansas this year, with only two small coun ties to hear from, is '248,134 as against 322,857 in 1692. Of this vote the Republicans cast 125,517, the Populist 94,380. and the Demo crats 27,747. The Republican plu rality is 30,047 and majority over all 2,900. SEW. ST SOTES.
