Farmer Cusbman, of Chenango county
New York, thinks we are going to have
a very severe winter, for tho following
reasons: Corn husks are very thick
hog's melt runs jagged : the breastbone
of a May goose shows spots resembling
the canals of Mars ; the ducks are flying
in U-shaped instead of V-shaped flocks,
and green frogs are changing their skins
and seeking springs for winter quarters.
An average waltz takes a dancer over
about three quarters of a mile, a square
dance makes him cover half a mile. A
girl with a well-filled program travels
thus in one evoning: Twelve waltzes,
nine miles ; four other dances at half a
mile apiece, which is hardly a fairly big
estimate, two miles more; the intermiss
ion stroll and the trips to the dressing
room to renovato her gown and complex
ion, half a mile more; grand total elovon
and ono-balf miles.
The official figures of paid admissions
to the World's Fair up to Monday are
21,460,461. Adding the number of free
admissions, the total is 27,538,041. This
is about the same as the totals of the Par
is Exposition. The total receiuts of the
latter were $3,300,000. The Columbian
receipts will far exceed this, aud will not
fall short Of $14,000,000. All obligations
have been met, and there is a cash bal
ance on hand of 2,500,O00. The gato re
ceipts from now on, it is figured, will
pay the current expenses until the end,
so that the stockholders, who have hold
ings representing t-'iOOO,000 upon which
they scarcoly expected to realize any
thing, will be paid 50 cents on the dollar.

The children's ganio of slapping hands
to the rymes of "Beau porrige hot, bean
poriidge cold," as now adopted to the use
ot adults has fun in it in large, solid
chunks. It may be played by a roomful
of people who are divided into fours. Iu
each group the couples aro so seated that
the hands of the second couplo meet
across the hands of the first couplo. As
everybody knows, the first motion is to
slap the hands palm downward upon the
knees ; the socoud is to slap the palms of
the upraised hands together, and soon
In the revised and enlarged form of the
game the second couple makes its first
motion when the first couple makes -its
second motion, and the second couplo
continues thus, always one motion be
hind the first to avoid collision. When
all the players are ready let somebody sit
down at the piano ami uegiu "iiiunign
School Cadets' March," or "Push Dem
Clouds Away,-' or any lively tune ot
suitable measure, and with the whole
room in motion to the music it won't take
any more than a month to discover that

takon with a violent typo of typhoid fe
ver. The surroundings wore all appar
ently in the best sanitary condition and
tho cause of tho epidemic was a mystery
to the physician who itartod an Investi

a mile away from the Peterson house a
rosident of the vicinity had removed his
water closet to over an abandoned well
on the premises and that the contamina

through tho ground and reached the
