Amos F. Ledebur,

Tionesta, May 1st, 1893.
This crazy-quilt financial policy of
tbe administration will drive the
nation to tbe verge of bankruptcy.
Carlisle knows what he wants, but
Cleveland doesn't know whether he
knows what be wants. Seems to be a
muddle of financial brains.
The Warren Mail published a
solid column of endorsements of
Speaker Thompson's candidacy for
State Treasurer last week. They
come from all parts of the State,
which shows the demand for his ser
vices are not of a local character, but
bis popularity extends into every
nook and corner of the Common
wealth. Thompson it will be, and
a good, safe candidate he'll make.
Judge Fell Strongly Endorsed.
"The undersigned members of the
Philadelphia liar respectfully urge
upon the Delegates to the Republican
State Convention that theseleclion of
the candidate for Judge of the Su
preme Court be made from the City
of Philadelphia.
"The vacancy on the Supreme
Bench to be filled at the November
election, was caused by the resigna
tion of a judge elected from this citv.
and Philadelphia, while furnishing
tne mum greater portion ot tbe busi
ness which comes before the Court,
has now but one representative on the
iiencn.
"We further earnestly recommend
the selection of the Hon. I). Newlin
Fell, who for sixteen years has been a
Judge of tbe Court of Common Fleas
of ibis city, and who has twice been
elected to tbe Bench on tbe nomiua
tion of both political parties.
"Judge Fell is old enough in judi
cial experience to be fitted for tbe
Supreme Court, and young enough in
years to give promise that he can,
without impairment of bis usefulness,
serve a tun term.
"His long service on the Beuch in
this city has been marked by ability,
learning, integrity, courage and
thorough fairness and impartiality."
The above endorsement of one of
tbe purest and ablest Judges in tbe
Slate is signed by over six hundred
f . I i i - ...
oi me leading lawyers ot his native
city, and the unanimity with which
his candidacy is received by all frac
tions of the party at his home shows
that his majority in the Quaker City
would be little less than phenominal
were he to be the candidate this fall,
and there is scarcely any doubt but
that the convention will name him,
berhaps by acclamation.
a one-siued ruarr.
The Philadelphia North American,
one of the leading Republican papers
of that city, contains the following
article on the candidacy of our pop
ular neighbor, Speaker Thompson
who is having very stuotb sailing in
bis canvass :
As the time for holding the Repub
iicbu oiaie wonveuiion draws near
interest in the Stale Treasurership
contest increases. Tbe only caudi
dates for the nomination who appea
to be in the fight at all are lion
Caleb C. Thompson, of Warren, who
has presided over the House for two
sessions, and Beujamin F. lleywood
of Mercer. The fact that Judge Fell
of Philadelphia, will undoubtedly be
nominated to In I tne vacancy on th
Supreme bench caused by the retire-
ment of Justice Paxson removes ex
Senator Harlan, of Chester, from the
contest, as candidates from adjoining
counties would not be selected for the
two leading places on the ticket.
It has been said that Speaker
Thompson's candidacy will interfere
with the Gubernatorial chances of
Congressman Stono two years hence,
both coming from the same county.
This theory is circulated mainly by
the friends of Mr, lleywood, who
hope to thus belittle the chances of
Mr. Thompson. The absurdity of
of this statement is at once apparent
when it is shown that Congressman-at-Large
McDowell, who headed the
ticket last fall, not only hails from
the same county, but actually lives
in the same town, Sharon, Mercer
county, that Mr. lleywood hails
from. In addition, it is well know
here that Mr. McDowell expects to
be a candidate next year to succeed
himself, as it is apparent that no
Congressional Apportionment bill
will be passed this year to render
Congre98man-at Large unnecessary.
Friends of Congressman Stone
assert that every candidate should
'stand on his own bottom," and tbat
the nomination of Speaker Thompson
this summer will not necessarily in
terfere with Mr. Stone's chances when
the Gubernatorial Convention meets
almost two years bonce.
The serious illness of Speaker
Thompson's wife has prevented that
gentleman from giving much atten
tion to bis candidacy. Every possi
ble available hour has been spent at
her bedside.
Nevertheless his friends have been
active and they assert that two-thirds
of the delegates will be for their fa
vorite if pledges count for anything.
Philadelphia promises a solid delega
tion for him, as docs also Pittsburg,
In addition, the influences of nearly
every member of the Legislature will
be thrown into tbe scales for him,
and altogether it may be said tbat
Mr. Thompson appears to be the fa
vorite in the race.
While Mr. T. J. Richer, of Altona.
Mo., was traveling in Kansas he was
taken violontlv ill with cholera morbus.
He called at a drug to not some medicine
