A gnndly number of the veterans of Stow post are making calculations on going to the big re union at Wash ington on the 20th of September. Some of the civilians are also design ing to take in the great doings. An alarm of fire last Wednesday evening brought out the populace in force. Happily there wasn't much tf it, a small blaze in the roof of John Wiant's house, which was easily ex tinguished, causiug the commotion. Recollect that Lawrence & Smear baugh have just stocked up on shoes, and that their line is one of the nicest of the season. During bis brief stay Alex's many friends here exten ded him a hearty welcome. L. E. Osgood, who manipulates the lever at Wheeler A Duseubury's large sawmill at Stowtowo, gave the Republican a pleasant call one day last week. He reports business active up iu that section, and the new rail road coming right along. It is said West Hickory enjoyed the distinction of having a regular knock-out slugging match on Friday night last, between two of her pugilis tic citizens. It required nine 3-miuute rounds to decide the scrap and compel one side to toss up the spouge. Court convenes next Monday, be ing nearly a month earlier than here tofore. The calendar embraces about the usual number of causes, while there will be a few crimiual cases on tap. We are always glad to "cte our frieuds" on these occasion?, and this time especially, as the machinery is considerably in need of the stud' that makes it run smoutbly. The camp meeting which begins at West Hickory next Sabbath, is being quite extensively heralded by hand bills, and will doubtless be largely attended. Revs. Ross of Pitltiburg, Hamilton aud Lawson of Fraukliu, aud John Lawsou of line, are the principal ministers mentioned that will be present. Excursion, rates are advertised on the W. N. Y. & P. road between Oil City and Iryioeton. ' The 57th annual session of the Erie Conference of the M. E. Church commences at Warren, Pa., Sept. 7, at 9 'a. ro. The Conference consists of 227 ministers ' in the effective, super numerary and superannuated relations. Bishop John P. Newman, of Omaha, will preside. Peaches will be high this year, for they are not plenty. Delaware and New Jersey will not be able to supply the demand. Pears are also scarce and correspondingly high. The only fruit that promises to be very abundant is grapes. This year's grape crop is exceedingly large. Mr. John Brooking of the LaRue, Ohio, News, was one among 50 or 60 guests who suffered from the effect of poison, which had mysteriously gotten into the food at a wedding supper at that place last week. Mr. Brooking and wife were both severely affected, but fortunately nono of the cases proved fatal, though all present were prostrated for some time. J. N. Heath of Starr, has the agency fur a first class seed house, and makes a specialty of the seed potato business. Tha "Ohio Jr." is one of his favorite varieties, and is specially adapted for this country. It is the earliest variety now on the market, is a great yielder, and grows large size. Now is the time to place your order for next season's seeding, and when John comes around give him a trial. He guarantees good results. There's no use going away from home to attend camp meeting this year, as one is booked for Tionesta to commence on the 3d and continue over the llih of September, as per notice elsewhere in this issue. Broad Axe Smith, the now famous colored minister, will be in charge of the meeting, which means (bat it will be a success in all particulars. Mr. Smith will be accompanied by bis wife, besides which there will be a number of colorod ministers of prom inence in attendance. The sixth annual convention of the W. C. T. U. of Forest county will be held in the Presbyterian Church at Maricnville, this year, on tbo 1st and 2d of September. The program is unusually large and attractive this year, and will doubtless afford much pleasure and profit to all who attend the sessions. Among the prominent National workers in the cause who will lend their presence is Miss Clara Hoffman, State President of Missouri, who will deliver one of her brilliant lectures ou Friday evening. Hie V. N. Y. & P. R. R., will run a graud double exsursion to Niag ara Falls aud Toronto, Out., Friday September 9th. Special train will leave Tionesta at G 45 a. m. This is a grand opportunity to take in the charms of Niagara, and Canada's Great Industrial Fair, which is to be held at Toronto, Sept. 5ih to 17th. The strike of the switchmen in the Lehigh Valley aud Erie yaids at Buffalo is causiug no small amount of annoyance in the freight business, which is affecting nearly all branches of business more or less seriously. A good deal of railroad property has been destroyed by fire, said to have been the work of the strikers. There is no telling where it will end, as the strike is spreading to other roads, those of the W. N. Y. & P. having gone out within a day or two. This is purely a sympathy strike, the meu beiog perfectly satisfied with their wages. Tionesta went up to Tidioute Monday and smashed the ball team of that place iu an old-fashioned sort of way. The game was rather loosely played ou the part of Tionesta, thus allowing Tidioute to get eight runs while they took eleven. This was done, we apprehend, for the purpose of coaxing them down here next day where, of course, they would never have seeo home plate. But it didn't work, tbe Tidiouters being minus the saud. To be sure our team were outrcgcously treated by the audience, but they expected nothing else aod it didn't rattle them auy. Tbey bad the game iu their own hands all along and so rather eujoyed the contortions of the crowd. Thore is more prosperity to the square acre in the United States than in any sec tion of the civilized globe, but no amount of legislation or prosperity will bring wealth to the profligate, the fools who seek to grow rich without labor, the feeble minded or the vicious. Whatever of dis content there is in this country emanates from the classes named. New York Ad vertiser. England lias had 31 Primo Ministers undor the rule or the house of Hanover, 10 of whom have hold the olhee twlco, and two Earl Derby and Mr. Gladstone threo times. Gladstone is now entering upon his font th term, thus breaking the record. At the same time he breaks an other record by taking tho ollice when nearly 83 years old, no other Premier ever having been appointed at such an advan ced age. The credit of breaking the world's trot ting record now belongs to Nancy Hanks, who made the mile on the Chicago traea Weducsday of last week in 2:071, one full seccoiid less than Sunol's fastest time. It is claimed by horsemen, however, that the new stylo of nulky with ball bearings and pneumatic tires, running as lightly as a bicycle, cuts a full second or more from a mile performance, lludd Doblo was her driver. Twelve thousand pcoplo saw tho sport. It was during one of tlio Legislative sessions, along towards the close, when even tho most todate old Nciiator relaxed his dignity u trille and unbent Kulliciuutly to take a drink with tlio "'liys" A party of choice spirits had been alternating between tho reading room and the bar of a prominent hotal, aud one of tlicui, a Sen ator who could tell a funny story aud was eougouial when he had encompassed his share of the bottle, was feeling a little bit wobbly in the logs. In fact m his leas got tangled his speech grew very thick and his tongue was evidently clod iu a fur ul ster. That was his condition as tlio party ranged up to the bur lor a parting drink. As tlio boozy benator looked toward the barkeeper ho saw a card hanging on the mirror which read: "No liquor sold to minors or intoxicated persons." People have little Idea of the dango roils risks of fire ami loss of life which they run by allowing matches to lie carelessly bundled or strewn aliout. October 21st, next, will he observed to the United States as Columbus Day, according to President Ilarrsou's proc lamation to that effect. Some of the boys and girls some old people, too may not understand why October 21st instead of October 12th, the day Christopher discovered this fair land, should be selected as Columbus Day. A circular at hand thus affurds the de sired information: "At the instance of the Executive Com mittee of tho National Public School Cele bration of Columbus Day, a bill was in troduced into Congress instructing Presi dent Harrison to issue a proclamation making Columbus Day a general holiday. In the interest of scholarly accuracy, this bill authorized tho change in date from October 12th. to October Hist, it pasMoil both branches of Congross and received tho President's signature. "Above all other dates nearly every pu pil in our public schools romoniber that Columbus discovered America October 12th, 1402. They will all want to know why the 400th anniversary falls on October 21st, 18!2. "For many centuries tho calondar Insti tuted by Julius Ciesar, known as the Ju lian calendar, was commonly acccptod. Tbi calendar, assumed that thero were SGoi days In a year. But as this made the year eloven minutes and lourleou secoonds too long, It could not without correction very long answer tho purpose for which It was devised. Consequently, in 1.W2, it was found necessary to reform the culcn dar, and the Gregorian calendar was adop ted. In order to crrecct the errors that the old calendar had mado, toil days were dropped out, and October 5th of 1.S2 be came October loth. As tho error was found to be exactly throe days in -100 years, the Gregorian calendar omitted the leap year from every conturial year, excepting those which were divisible by 400. Thus the years l.ViO, 1710 and 1800 were not leap years. "As above stated, this reformation took place in 1582, and ten days wcro omitted from tho calendar.
