Free wool embodies an extension
of free trade which passes the limits if
a Unit for revenue only, ana involve
u almost inevitable resort to direct
taxation for the support of the nation
al government.
IIavino very effectually shut out
the compotltion of foreigu cheap labor
in foreign countries the Republican
party proposes to add to the protection
of our labor the exclusion of foreign
cheap labor from competition with our
labor at home.
Tariff Picrum3. Io Eugland
uuder free trade the woolon industry
lias increased einco 1860 57 per cent,
In tho United States under protection
it has increased in the same time 375
per cent., and good woolen clothing is
as cheaD in this country to-day as in
England. Aisi York Press.
As A result of tho vote at the Re
publican primaries held in Armstrong
county on Saturday last on the ques
tion of popular choice of United
fctates Senator, Quay had a majority
of over one thousand votes over Dal
ztjll. Senator Quay also carried Union
and Snyder counties by large majori
ties, where the question was also sub
mitted to popular vote.
Slavery abolished, free homesteads
provided, industries vaBtly developed,
and new employments opened, the
dollar of the workingmau and bond
holder exactly equalized, high wages
maintained, and protection almost
perfectly adjusted are some of the
salient points in the labor record of
the Republican party that no laborer
can afford to forget or ignore.
The entire argument of the major!
ty report of the Committee of Ways
and Means of the House of Congress
oo the wool tariff question is based
upon the worn out fallacy that "the
tariff is a tax." What will the "tax"
be on British and other foreign wool
products and South Amoricao and
Australian wool when they have taken
possession of our home markets and
can grind our citizens under trust
monopolies?
President Harrison, eays the
Phila. Press, has drawn general and
universal praise by the last despatch
on the Bering Sea issues, aud, judging
from the change in the position of the
London Star aod the utterances of
other London evening papers, this
despatch is likely to have the lemark
able merit of so influencing public
sentiment io England that Lord Salis
bury will be forced to modify his orig
inal position.
Secretary Harrity may believe
that Cleveland stands the best chance
for a Presidential nomination now
in March but just wait until he gets
the Pennsylvania contingent to Chica
go next June, and it will be found
that his belief has undergone a radical
change. He will be for the man who
will help Harrity. The Secretary
always carries four aces up his sleeve
, when the game of politics is being
played. Harrisburg Telegraph.
Everything has increased in value
iu this country except the Democratic
party. An event which took place in
April, 1865, sent up the value of
American property, American charac
ter, and American patriotism to a
very high point, and wherever the
Republican party has stood from that
day to this that character has never
gone down in the scale, and while the
Republican party remains in power it
never will. Gen. C. II. Grosvenor.
We see 00 reason why the preseDt
Congress should remain in session any
longer. Let it pass the appropriation
bills and go home. The cheap uiouey
schemes and tariff tinkering are con
demned by the people, and it is
precious little sympathy that old
Cheese Tarer llolman is getting in his
economical schemes. As that is about
the Democratic stock in trade this
year, they bad better dump the stock
and adjourn. The people would ap
plaud a proceeding ot thai Kind as
their best effort.
In the theory of free trade the fun
dameutal principle is that it is wisdom
"to buy in the cheapest and sell in the
dearest market available. lhis
the doctrine of segregated selGshness,
expressed in the saying "every fellow
for himself and the devil take the
hindmost." Protection takes a wider
view of the subject, and insists that
as the "laborer is worthy ot his hire"
and is a more valuable citizen when
be receives his share, it is wiser to
"live ro I let live." This is the ho
'.rine of n;rpated lilpfiliic?:.
And so Roger Q Mills, of Texas, is
a Senator, lie will now be able to
meet David B. Hill face to face and
pay him back for the part he took in
the Speakership fight.
Col. J. C. Bonner of Toledo, was
at the Ebbitt House, Washington, I).
C, last week. Colonel Bonner is pn
gngnd in the manufacture of brushes
in Toledo. The McKinley law raised
the duty on brushes from 30 per cent,
to 40 per cent. Mr. Bonner was
asked how the change had affected his
business. "Under the 10 per cent,
increase of duty," he said, "we have
enlarged our facilities and are sending
to all parts of the country a grado of
brushes which wo did not attempt to
make under the former duty at all.
The Mills bill proposed to reduce the
duty on brushes to 20 per cent. Had
this been done it would, without any
doubt or room for dispute, have proved
the ruio of the business of brush man
ufacturing in this country."
