Secretary Blaine Says No.
The Republicans throughout the
country, while not much surprised,
wore still greatly disappointed to re
ceive Secretary Blaine's refusal to al
low his name to go before the national
convention for the Presidential nomi
nation, and consequently bis declina
tion to accept the great office, for no
reasonable man doubts his election
were he to be nominated. Following
is his letter, which was made public
on Saturday night:
Washington, Feb. 6, 1892.
Honorable J. S. Clarkson, Chairman of
the Republican Rational Committee.
My Dear Sir:
i am not a candidate for the Presi
dency, and my name will not go before
the Republican .National Convention
for tho nomination. I make this an
nouncement in due season.
To those who have tendered me their
support I owe sincere thanks, and am
most grateful for their conGdence.
They will, I am sure, make earnest
effort in the approaching contest,
which is rendered specially important
by reason of the industrial and finan
cial policies of the Government being
t stake. The popular decision on
these issues is of great moment, and
will be of far-reaching consequences.
Very Sincerely Yours,
Signed.) James G. Blaine.
