Proceedings have been instituted to test thd validity of Michael Cash man's claim to the office of Associate Judge of Elk county. Tbe contest is based upou the irregularity of tbe tickets voted at tbe last election, bis name having been printed ou the reg ular Democratic county ticket,' when it should bave been on a separate ticket headed "Judiciary." At the regular meetiog of Forest Lodge, A. O. U. W., last Friday eve oing, the following officers were elect' ed for tbe ensuing term : P. M. W., Ja. Canfield ; M. W., Wm. P. Wal ters; Foreman, G. W. Judge Noyes, in Argument Court last week, baoded down an able npiu ion on the feoce laws in tbe case of Marion Greenlee vs.-Jacub Eiseobauui, in which application had been made for a new trial. After citing the va rious laws be finishes as follows: "Being satisfied that there is no law now in force in Warren county or any part of it, which requires the owner of cleared land to feuce against cattle runuiog at large, we think our mstruo tions to the Jury were correct, and therefore the rule to show cause bv new trial should not be bad is dis charged. Tbe wagon is for Georgo Blurock, who proposes takiug it with him when he goes about two weeks hence because he can not get so good an article out there, and oan pay freight from here aod still save money. Supt. Kerr issues his call for the teachers' annual institute this week, with a gentle hint to the members of the profession In the county that, not only are they iovited, but expected to be present on this occasion. His list of instructors and lecturers never was better, and it remains simply for tbe publio to lend its presence in order to make it the best institute ever held in the county. Attention is directed to the card in this issue of C. E. Daniels, who has opened a machine shop and foun dry in Tidioute, and is prepared to do all work in bis line at reasonable prices. Mr. Daniels makes a special ty of mill work, a thing which our mill men will appreciate, as they have heretofore been obliged to go long distances for such work, and which is now obviated. "The Gospel of Good Roads: A Letter to the American Farmer," by Isaao B. Potter, is one of the very excellent publications just issued, fur a copy of which we are indebted to J. A. Fellows, Esq., Genera! Passenger aod Ticket Agent of the W. N. Y. & P. R'y, Buffalo, N. Y. The title indi cates the purpose of tbe pamphlet, which is nicely illustrated, and a very entertaining treatise on the subject of roadmakiog. Chief of Police Fry was up from Oil City last Saturday, having with bim some of the plunder found in the possession of the two negroes now awaiting trial in Kittanning. He submitted the gold bowed spectacles to the inspection of Mrs. Smearbaugb, who readily identified tberu as her property, stolen from her residence on the night of Nov. 2d. Mr. W. II. Mahie, of Tidioute, whose residence was invaded on the night previous, Nov. 1st, met tho chief here and posi tively identified a pair of nose glasses stolen from him on that night. When the Kittanning authorities are done with tbe culprits it is likely tbey will be asked to come buck to this neigh borhood aud explain to au anxious public how they came in possession of these articles. An old fiiend in a Dew dress, and an article that has come to bo one of tbe itidispcusiblcs of an editor's desk, comes to band iu the Columbia Daily Calendar fir 1892. The Calendar is in the form of a pad containing 367 leaves, each 5ix2i inches; one for each day of the year, to be removed daily, aud one fur the entire year. Tbe day of the week, of the month, and of tbe year are given, and each slip bears a short paragraph pertaining to cy cliog or some kindred subject. At the bottom of each leaf is blank for memoranda, every leaf being accessible at any time. The stand is an entirely new departure, being made of sheet metal fiuished in ivory black, and is very compact. A more desirable desk companion could not be imagined. Tbe Pope Mfg. Sunday uight last burglars made another raid on Tionesta, the victim this time being Louis Nunemao, who lives in the old Venango house, near the eastern end of the bridge. About one o'clock Mrs. N. heard strange noises in the house and awakoned her husband, who jumped out of bed just in time to hear tbe retreating steps of a man at the back door. He discov ered his pantaloons lying near the door, and further discovered the ab sence of 81172 in money which be bad in bis pockets when be retired Louie gave tbe alarm and a number of citizens parolled the town till near ly daylight, and believe tbey bad the thieves io pretty close quarters at one time, but were not aware of it until they bad made good their escape. Two men a tall and a short one were seen by a lady trying to gain an en trance to the old skating rink, pre sumably to hide, and it was here that close search was made. After the searchers had moved to another spot a racket among the board piles near by was heard which is supposed to have been the hiding thieves, but having every advantage in their favor tbey succeeded io escaping. It proves just as everybody "told you so;" no soouer has tbe scare from tbe raid of a few weeks ago subsided, wben auotber is made, and bad they not been disturbed evidently on the "start in" more houses would doubtless have been visited. Let everybody be well loaded aod f'tep with one eye open until a few members of tbe gang have been weighed down with cold lead. For bargains in Furniture eo to S. II. They sell a box of villainous soap for fi, offer ing as a premium a rubber door mat with tlie victim's name worked thereon. The f2 is Invariably collected and the box of alleged soap delivered, but tho door mat never arrives. Look out for them. Tho Butler Citizen is responsible for this : A lady school teacher of that place took a school boy to task one day for being away a whole week, and bo excused him self by saying that she had told all the scho'ars not to come to school if tbey had any contagious discasos at homo, and that they had a new baby at his houso. Ho was excused. Tho epidemic of diphtheria in Stoneboro abated almost as rapidly as it came on. There has been but one case in the town during the past wock. Tho schools have resumed. One of the methods employed to exterminate the disease and prevent the spread of the contagion was peculiar. Large sulphnr fires were started In the streets throughout the town and especially near those bouses containing cases of diphtheria. These fires were kept burn ing day and night, and supplied with coal from the mines near by, containing a large amount of sulphur. Franklin Aem. There are fow persons who would think of stealing tho monoy with which to buy Christmas presents, yet there are many who In reality do this. There is a pleasure in giving which prompts many a man to tiirow consistency to the dogs. Tbe man who foolishly buys presents with money which he honestly owes to others is vir tually stealing IL The better way, betore making Christinas presonts is to find out what you owe and pay it. We want every mother to know that croup can bo prevented. True croup never appears without a warning. The first symptom is hoarseness; then the child appears to have taken a cold or a cold may have accompanied the hoarseness from the fitart. After that a peculiar rough cough is devoloped, which is followed by tlie croup. The time to act is when the child first be comes hoarse; a few doses of Chamber lain's Cough Remedy will prevent the attack. Even after a rough cough has ap peared the disease may be prevented by ucing this remedy as directed. It has never been known to fail. 25 cent, 50 cent and f 1 bottles fur sale by Proper & Doutt, Druggists. William Dean nowells is to write a story especially for girls. It is said that Mr. Ho wells, who is perhaps the foremost of living American novelists, has long had in mind a story of American girl-life, which hudjeves will be the best piece of work he has ever done. The great novel ist has now been induced to write out the story, and at present he is at work upon it. It is a novel unlike any which Mr. Howells has ever written. It deals en tirely with the struggles of a Western girl who goes to New York, and the story will have about it all the flavor which attaches to a tale of city life with a young girl as the central heroine. Heretofore all of Mr. Howells' novels have gone to the Harpers, but this special girls' novel will be printed during 18UJ in The Ladies' Home Journal, of Philadelphia, the pub lishers of which have bought the exclusive riglita to tho story from Mr. Howells. The novel is to bo bea'itifully illustrated, and Mr. Howells himself believes that it will be as attractive a story as any with which his name has boon connected. Tensions and Claims.
