William Windom, Secretary of the Treasury of (lie United State, died in New York City, Inst Thursday evening at 10:05 o'clock, in the ban quel hall at Delnmnica', where he was a guest of the New York Hoard of Trade and Transportation. His had been the Erst toast of tho evening. He had finished his response to the toast : "Our Country's Prosperity De pendent upon its Instruments of Com merce," had seated himself, swooned at once and died almost immediately. Every effort to restore him was made, but iu vaiu. He died of heart disease. The great assemblage at once dissolved. William Windom was born in Bel mont county, Ohio, in 1827, although many were of the belief that Mr. Windora'a birthplace was in Minneso ta. For a number of years Secretary Windora resided in Minnesota, and represented that State in the United States Senate with marked ability for three terms, or a period of eighteen years. He graduated with high honors in 1848, and two years later, after being admitted to the bur, he practiced law at Mount Vernon, Ohio. His marked aptitude as a pleader in the courts soon brought him into prominence, and in 1852 he was made prosecuting attorney for Knox county, Ohio. He held this position for three yeaks, when he removed to Minnesota. uu time iur. lriuuom cast ms first vote he took an active interest in politics, and his advice was frequently sought by leading Republicans in his adopted State on matters pertaining to the advancement of the Republican party. He wag sent to Congress in 1859, and was re elected to serve four suc cessive terms, a period of ten years, ending his career in the House in 252 K was appointed to tie United States Senate iu 1870 to fill the unexpired term of Daniel S. Noiton, deceased. He was also chosen for the terms ending 1878 and 1883. He re signed, however, in 1881 to accept the Treasury portfolio in President Gar field's Cabinet, and upon his retire ment from the Cabinet, after Garfield's death, he was returned to the Senate, where he served the remainder of bis term. When Mr. Harrison became President he offered the Treasury port folio to Mr. Windom, wbo stepped back into his old place, in which he has fully, maintained his reputation as n skillful financier.
