-Severe frost was reported from
the surrounding hills on Monday
morning. We have not learned
whether the pan cake crop was de
molished or not.
Black and grey squirrels are now
ripe, but the crop is about as elim as
other crops in this section, if reports
can be relied on. They may get
plentier, but hardly.
-The Republican had a pleasant
visit from Prof. C. T. Work, who was
a dolegate to the late Sabbath School
convention. Mr. W. has recently
been elected principal of the DuBois
publio schools.
The grading of Tictsworth Hill
has made that one of the finest pieces
of road this county boasts of. A con
tinuance of the same kind of work up
the creek, such as is proposed, will
make a fine driveway.
A good sized addition is building
to the house which Mr. Robinson
moved onto the lot lately occupied by
Scowden & Clark's carriage factory,
and the same will shortly be converted
into a very comfortable residence.
The W. N. Y. & P. R. R. will
sell excursion tickets to Titusville on
the 10th to accommodate those who
wish to attend the meeting of the
Northwestern Association, G. A. R.
The tare has been placed at 80 cents
for the round trip.
The oil repoit for the month of
August shows up as follows: Cora
pleted wells, 579 ; daily production,
dry holes, si, ibis is some
what of a falling off from the July
report, which is as follows: Completed
wells, 555; daily production, 10,537;
dry boles, 105.
The Lord's Supper will be cele
brated in the Amity Ev. Lutheran
Church, Newmansville, September
14th, at 10:30 a. m. Preparatory
services Saturday morning previous at
the same hour. 'I he pastor, Rev. Car
Zinssmcuter, has recently resigned and
accepted a call of a fluid near Pitts
burgh. This being tho last celebration
of the Huly Supper, all the members
are requested to be present.
A note from our old friend Thorn-
as Porter, now Iivinc. at North Bend,
Dodge county, Nebraska, gives the
cheering news that crops in that coun-
ty are good. It is refreshing to hear
of a spot where crops have not been a
total failure this year.

We note with much pleasure the
fact that our venerable friend Benja
min May has concluded to make Tio
nesta his home again, and took the
precaution to have his name placed on
the registry list, so as to be prepared
to give the Republican ticket a boost
in November. We join in extending
Mr. May a hearty welcome to citizen
ship in bis old home, and hope for him
manr pleasant years of peace and
contentment.
The name of C. W. Stone, Secre
tary of State, is announced as a can-
didate for Congress as the successor of
the late Col. Watson. Mr. Stone's
host of friends in this county would re-

make a Congressman of whom the
whole northwest could be proud. By

Scott, the wealthiest man in North
western Pennsylvania. His estato is
valued at 83.500.000. The value of
his timber lands in Warren and Forest

000. Many years ago Mr. Watson
purchased 20,000 acres of land in
North Dakota, and also large tracts
of timber lands in the States of Wash

Wm. Hays was the victim of a
bad accident on Wray & Co.'s mill, at

ternoon. He docs the log jacking,
and while pulling in a leg got caught
in the "bull wheel" and was very
badly crushed before the mill could be
stopped. When our informant left
the scene the unfortunate man was
still alive, on Saturday morning, but
his recovery was a matter of grave
doubt. Mr. Hays is a man about 28
years of age, and has a wife and three
children. P. S. Later information
states that the injured man is recover
ing nicely
Friends here received the painful
intelligence last week that Elwood
McGrorey, who spent a year here
about two years ago and is well re
mcrabered, had met with a terrible
railroad accident by which he had lost
an arm and a leg, and was otherwise
badly crushed about the head and
face. Monday word came that the
unfortunate young man had died from
his injuries, after suffering fur ten
days. The accident happeued in
Montana, where he Las been engagej
in railroading for about a year. We
are without full particulars, but un
dorstaod he was knocked off a moving
traiu and dragged under it a distance
of several rods before he could be re
leased. The remains will be brought
to this place for burial, and are ex

A dwelling bouse occupied by
Charles Burns was burned to the
ground with cootcots on Saturday
morning. The insurance had expired
in July and bad not been renewed.
A. J. Seigworth drove to Murrins-
ville and back last week, where he is
overseeing the drilling of a well on
the Fleming farm.
The East Hickorv club won the de
L.ding game from the Haymakers of
Whig Hill, Saturday, by a score of
48 to 15.
The recent storms have blown down
many acres of uuo lorest timber in
this county, Collins A, Siggins, on
Porky, having nearly 400 acres of
hemlock completely prostrated. A
large amouut of Wheeler & Dusen-
bury's pine is also down, as well as
much of the late L. F. Watson's pine.
Grace Metzgar aud Robert Lynch
were uuited in marriage at the resi
dence of the bride's parents, at East
Hickory, on Saturday evening, by
Squire Foreman. The best wishes of
the entire community go with them in

Resolved, That tho Interests of the Sab
bath School cause ato greatly advanced by
tho meeting together in convention, there
by securing more unity of action ; and
we therefore urgo a bettor and more com
plete organization of the county for this
purpose
Itenolred, That the Sabbath School teach
ers should be exemplary Christian men
and women if they can be had ; but atiove
all, keep the Sabbath School open and se
cure the lest teachers you can uuder the
circumstances in each ease.
Whereas, Wo believe tho future wel
fare and prosperity of our civil and reli
gious institutions depends in a great do
grea upon our Siibhath Schools,
ltesolved. That we go forth with renewed
energy and zeal In this grand Sabbath
School work, under the Cross of Christ.
Whereas, It is the opinion of this con
vention that the evils of intemporanee
and tobacco using aro not siiillciently
guarded against in our Sabbath School
instruction, therefore,
Hetolved, That Sabbath School workers
be urged to put forth stronger efforts in
warning all against these evils, and to bo
more faithful in giving from time to time
such instruction as tends tn emphasize the
command, "keep thyself pure."

Jellers of Oil City, and Dr. Fradonburgh,
of Warren, for their exeollont and useful
