Tho fire alarm last Friday fore

portion of the siding. How tho fire
started is a mystery.

One of the tnoBt entertaining lit
tle volumes that has come under our
notice for a long time is "Recollections
of General Graut," by George W.
Cbilds, whom everybody knows as the
General's steadfast friend while be
lived. Perhaps no man now living is
better fitted for such a work than is
Mr. Childs, owing to the wonderful
intimacy that existed between these
two really great men during the most
interesting period of the lamented
General's eventful life.
An enterprising broker at the Oil
Exchange embarked in a side business
the other day. He bought a nice
whetstone for fifteen cents and pro
ceeded to sharpen his knife. A fellow
broker admired the stone and was
sold a half interest in it confidentially
for five cents, which he made on a re
cent break in the market. S'ince then
the original purchaser of the stone bas
quietly sold a balf interest in it to
about twenty partners and is thinking
of investing in a grindstone. Blizzard.
Tbe Standard Oil Company bas a

A shocking accident occurred in
Franklin, Thursday evening, which
resulted in the almost instant death of
Mrs. Edward Fuller, a well known
end highly respected lady of that
place. From the Evening News we
glean the following particulars of the
sad affair: "At about 7:30 o'clock
Mrs. Fuller, of the Third Ward, ws
driving up Liberty street. In tbe
buggy with her were Mrs. Martin
Blaok, of the Third Ward, and Miss
llattie Tobey, sister of Rev. Mr.
To boy, pastor of the Free Methodist
Church. When uear 7th street the
horse, which belongs to Rev. Mr.
Tobey, took fright at the big umbrella
on a grocer's wagon that was passing.
He started on a run, not very swift,
but fast enough to alarm the ladies.
Miss Tobey, who was driving, was
thrown out and somewhat bruised.
Mrs. Fuller then rose and attempted
to spring out. In doing this, either
her foot caught in the lines or the
folds of her skirt caught in tho spokes.
Tbe exact uature of tbe mishap is not
certain, but those who saw tbe acci
dent agree tbat she was caught and
whirled forward with the wheel. Her
bead and shoulders struck on the
ground with such force that her neck
was broken. Same who had witnessed
the accident cried to Mrs. Black to
remain iu the buggy, which she did.
Tbe horse was stopped before be got
to 8th street."

arising under tbe customs, navigation,
internal revenue and inter-state com
merce laws, which will engage their
special attention. Mr. Agnew's well
known ability as a lawyer, bis un
doubted iotegrity and responsibility,
long experience in the military ser
vice and civil office, and his proverbial

success. A liberal share of patronage
is solicited by the new firm, who will
give their undivided attention to all
