The acknowledgement by the New

was tho iuvcntiou of one of its report

be most humiliating to any reputable

silly and contemptiblo position is not
the sort of matter in which a deceutly

Friends of the Hon. William A.
Wallace have already got him nomi
nated for Governor. The method by
which they havo reached this conclu
sion is easy and popular,' About one'
seventh of tho whole number of dele
gates who will make up the Democrat

elected, aud some of these are for
Wallace. Putting them, with a great
many more that are going to be elect

and there you are. This sort of cal

The bill.'proviJiog for a ship canal
around Niagara Foils, which has been
discussed from the foundation of ou
Government, has been favorably re
ported in Congress.
The members of the Republican
State Committee havo beeu notified to
meet in Philadelphia to day fur the
purpose of fixiog a date fur holding
the State Convention. The supposi
tion is that June 25th will be named
as the day.
The bill agreed upon by the River
and Harbor Committee, appropriating
over 20,000,000, allows $20,000 fur
the impiovement of the Allegheny
river. The btream geta a great deal
lesi .according to its size, length and
beauty than many others.
Speaker Reed sees nothing to pre
vent Congress from adjourning June
1, but Senator Hoar expects it to sit
un'.il September 1. The Senator evi
dently thinks there will be some time
spent on the tariff bill when it reaches
his House. In the lower one the talk
is of passing it about the middle of
May.
i
M. Eiffel, who built tho great
tower at Paris, wants to put oue up in
Chicago five hundred feet higher than
his Parisian effort. Five hundred feet
only.? That will not come up to Chi
cago ideas of immeusily. Now if he
had said five thousand feel, Chicago
lit t irli t PFi tertain the proposition. M.
-- 3
The tariff hill was reported to the
House Wednesday afternoon of last
week. At the last minute hides were
put upon the free list. Sugar is also
put upon the free list, and a bouoty of
two cents per pound provided for the
next fifteen years for the producers of
sugar in this country. It is estimated
that the bill will make a reduction of
about $70,000,000 per annum in the
receipts of the Government. The re
port of the majority of the Ways and
MeatJS committee which accompanied
the bill says: "It was the aim of the
committee to fix the duties upon that
class of manufactured goods and farm
products which can be supplied
home so as to discourage the use
like foreign goods and products, and
secure to our own people and our own
producers the home market, believing
that competition among ourselves will
secure reasonable prices to consumers
in the future, as it has invariably done
in tho past. The bill is framed in the
interest of the people of the United
States. It is fur the better defense of
American homes and American indus
tries." There were two minority re
pqrts, oue by Mr. McKenna against
the sugar clause, aud one by Mr. Car
lisle representing the democrats against
the wholo bill.
