Congressman Watson of Warren, through bis efficient Secretary, Curfe-j Sbawkey, has remembered many of our Forest county citizens with garden seeds this spring. It's a good thing we Republicans live bandy a Republi can district where they elect good men to office, else we might have to go down into our pockets when garden making comes around. The Warren district will do itself an injustice if it don't return Col. Watson for another term. The newly elected borough coun cil met on Monday evening of last week, with Burgees Jas. R. Dr. Siggins is announced in the Vindicator as a candidate for Congress on the Democratio ticket. The doctor would have extended the courtesy of his announcement a little farther, but it is whispered around that Editor Kepler refused him admission to bis columns, and it is further hinted that he has some designs on this county's instructions, himself. Republicans have little concern in the matter, but all the same, it would grieve us all to see the thing sold out again like it was two years ago. Such proceedings are disgusting to all parties. The Blizzard thus mentions a character well known to many of our raftmen, who have "run across" him on their trip down tbe river: "James Collins, one of the men arrested Tues day by the Fur, Fin and Feather Club for seining in the river, is spoken of by raftsmen who have known him for years as an eccentric and peculiar character. His home is on the river and his face is a familiar one to the older raftsmen. They meet him fre quently on the river with bis boat loaded sometimes with fish and at other times with torkeys, frogs, pigs, game, Christmas trees, or whatever he may find a special demand for down the river. They also find him at times with bis boat empty and loaded bim self loaded with whisky and drunk on the bank. He has made plenty of money along the river but is just as poor as though he had made less. Tbe seine taken from him and his partner was probably made by Collins, who is said to be very bandy in turning out work of that kind. It is 150 feet long and worth abont fifty dollars." lirief mention was made in our issue of last week of tbe tragic death of Harvey Hardison, brother of our esteemed townsman, J. II. Hardison near his home at Santa Paula, Cal. on the 5th inst. Sinoe then additional particulars havo been received which are about as follows: In company with two companions.Mr. II. had en tered an oil mine to make some inves ligations after an explosion in the forenoon of the same day had occurred Having entered the mine about 700 feet, they evidently had attempted to .turn on the incandescent electric light and there being probably some escape io the light, the gas in the mine was ignited and the explosion occurred killing all three men instantly. In that country, one way of obtaining oil is to dig into tbe hillside, into, tbe solid roctc, and when the oil is struck it flows or runs out of the tunnel while the supply holds out, which is almost indefinitely. The tunnel in which these men losttheir lives was abou 900 feet long, in which the only means of lighting, with any degree of safety, is by electricity. The following additional partiou lars of the shooting of Mr. E. II, Darrah, near. Portland, Oregon, on April 1st, mention of which we mad last week, are taken from tbe Portland Oregonian, of April 3d, to which pape the circumstances were related by Mr I. D. Doverspike, a relative of the de ceased: "Mr. Darrah and I left Port laud a week ago to inspect soma tim ber land along the Clatskaniue river We looked over quite a number of claims and Darrah and another man uamed C. R. Hall bought up about twenty during the few days we were there. Yesterday afternoon Darrah and I again went out and after walk iog together a while, we drifted apart. I beard a rifle report and when I came to investigate I found Darrah dead with a bullet hole through tbe heart, The shot was fired by a deer hunter numed J. C. Murray, and the shooting evidently was entirely accidental. I saw Murray this morning, and be said in all probability be did the shooting, as he was looking for deer, and dis charged his rifle about four o'clock iu the afternoon. We at once summoned a coroner's jury, and tbe inquest was to have been held to day. I, myself came to Portland to send the sad news to his wife at San Diego. The remains will he brought to Portland to-morrow." Prohibition League. State Organizer, Tullie Morgan, will be at the Court House, Tionesta, Pa , April lHth, 1SUO, at 2 o'clock P. The counties of Potter and Cameron each havo a femalo candidate for superin tendent of schools. Our old friend, Martin Williams, of New Bothlchem, was so unlucky aa to fall from a scaffold recently while doing some paper banging. As a result he was laid up several days for repairs. The following from the Mcadvillo Tri bune will apply Just a woll to every other community t "One of Bon. Franklin's maxims, 'If you buy what you don't need, you will soon need something you can't buy,' should be borne in mind by several young men whom we could name, who are ever requesting loans of their friends." An exchange speaks thus of a nuisance that prevails in a great many communi ties: "Corry is infested with peddlers who are selling household articles on the install ment plan. The goods are very Inferior and prices very high. You had bettor put jour money Into a box, a little at a time (the amount of the installment), and when you got enough, go and buy for cash at half the price they charge you." The President sent to the Senate Satur day last the name of Miss Kate M. Scott to bo Postmistress st Brookvillc, to suc ceed Mr. L. R. Erdice, whose commission will expire the latter part of this month. Notwithstanding the repeated assertions of our noighbor ol the Jcffersonian-Demo crat, elections for postmasters do elect, or at least this seems to be one of the In stances wherein the verdict of the ballot baa been allowed to stand. Drookvitle Re publican, The postmaster at Hagansvllle, Michi gan, comes as near being a man of all work as any one we have heard of. In addition to discharging the duties of post master, he runs a restaurant, grocery, hardware, dry goods, boot and shoo store, and produce store, all nndor one roof, and still finds time to farm, run a saw mill, dicker In cedar, buy and sell pine lands, manufacture shingles, conduct a black smith shop, practice medicine in a small way, mix drugs, act as Justice of the peace and go to church twice on Sundays. Commissioner Rauin estimates that 200,- 000 veterans will die in the next six years ; that In 12 years the number will have reached 450,000, and that this roll In 18 years will have swelled to 720,000 thus duplicating, over and over again with dead, the great armies of the Union. Gen. Raum has reached the conclusion that over half a million veterans now living, namely, 6S1, 000, will yet yield up 12 years of their lives on account of the wear of field Bervice. In other words, the expectation of life for this number of survivors has been shortenod by 12 years. Mary had a little lamb, its fleece was white as snow ; it strayed away one sum mer day where lambs should never go. Then Mary sat ber down and tears stream ed from her eyes ; she never found the lamb because she did not advertise. And Mary had a brother John, who kept n vil lago store ; he sat down and smoked his pipe and watched the open door. Ana as the people passed along and did not stop to buy, John still sat down and smoked bia pipe and blinked his sleepy eye. And so the sheriff closed him out, but still ho llngored near, and Mary came to drop with him a sympathetic toar. "How is it sister, can you tolljwhy the other mer chants hero, sell all their goods and thrive from year to year?" Remembering now her own bad luck, tho littlo maid replies "Those other merchants get there, John because they advertise." Exchange. As statod in Tuesday cvoning's Blizzard, two men who refused to give their names were arrostod Tuesday, one by Major Fraukliu and the other by Chief Fry, on a description and Information obtained by President N. II. Brown, of tho Fur, Fin find Feather Club, charging them with seining in the Allegheny River for fish. That both of the men were cripples was not known to tho club until alter the ar rests had been made, but a knowledge of the fact would not have hindered the pros ecution. The oldor man of tho two, who finally said that he was called James "Hoptoe," but made no denial when asked if his right uamo was not James Collins, was particularly impudent and foul mouthed. John II. Miller, who refused to give his namo until the two were brought before 'Squire Reynolds this morning, was more calculated to excite pity. He said that he had a mother and sister to support and that, beiug a cripple, he supported thorn by hunting, trapping and fishing. Collins soon cooled oil' when brought before the 'Squire, and said that they were bunting and fishing to keep out of the Kor house; that tbey belonged "down the river" and had commenced seining in the river above Tidioute a couple of weeks ago. He also pleadod for lieniency and promised to do no more Ille gitimate fishing. They further agreed to deliver their seine to the authorities to be destroyed, and iu view of tho fact that both were cripplws the prosecution chari tably refrained from proceeding further in the case. They were remanded to the lockup until 3 o'clock this afternoon, when Major Franklin went up with lliom to Hotmail's Island to procure thoir seine and to release the large stock of fish they hud caught Illegitimately. Tho experience of these meh should serve as a warning to others. The Fur, Flu and Feather Club prop-ises to havo a vigorous enforcement of tho game and fish laws iu this section aud is specially well prepared to learn of any violations. Oil City iiltzzaid.
