His wife, and physician, Dr. Rumberger, aocom panied him. Much sickness mar be ob viated by proper care in this matter. It is not safe to boil tho tubers with their "jackets" on. Since the season opened it has been discovered that pheasants are unusually scarce. Ferry Saulsgiver, the messenger, did not know whether it was a shot gun or rifle, but thought it was a shot gun, and that the shot took effect in the abdomen, which would make it ex ceedingly serious. She was yet alive when be started. Dr. Morrow went out. Certain newspapers, about two months ago, published elaborate argu ments to show that the fuel gas snpply would soon be exhausted, and it so alarmed the gaa companies in many ocalities that tbey raised tbe price to consumers, so as to provide against the impending gas famine. We find the following item In one of our exchanges and give it for what it is worth : "It is reported that the scalp bounty law has been declared unconstitutional, and tnat no more premiums on scalps will be paid. It is important that Justices, who are in the habit of cashiog these orders and then getting their money back from the county, should make a note this it may be tbe means of saving them several dollars." Roll is in luc Tbe Pennsylvania Gas Co., which supplies Jamestown, Corry and Erie, bas voted to use tbe meter system, and place the price at 25 cents per thous and feet. This will bring the price np to (4 25 for No. 5 burners, tbe kind irenerally in use during tbe cold months. The papers say this will make the fuel too expensive and cause the poorer classes to abandon it. The manufacturers of Jamestown have been notified that they will no longer be supplied. The company claims a lack of gas to be tbe cause of tbe change to the meter system. At tbe recent convention of County Commissioners, held in Allen town, Pa., a -variety of subjects of interest and value to the people were discussed, and among those agreed upon were the following : To urge tbe Legislature to pass laws providing for the revision of tbe present road law ; that corporations be taxed on an equality with real estate; that District Attorneys be paid a salary rated on population, and that such portions of the act of 1887 providing for the reg ulation of tbe National Guard, as conflict with other laws, be repealed. We hear some one tell of those hideous midoight yells, while the thing of bloodshed walks the roof of the sbaoty, and awakens George from his peaceful slumbers by its hollering, "coom-er-ootl coora-er oot!" But George does not come out until both chambers of his double-barreled shot gun are filled to the muzzle, and then with a "Betty and I killed the bear" attitude he waits for this carnivorous beiutr to appear, and aided by tbe light of tbe moon he sees it spread its wings and sail through the sombre forest. NEWSY NOTES. Erie County Commissioners offer a re ward of ton dollars for the scalp of every sheep-killing dog. California has become a successful com petitor with Malaga in the production of raisins. The Malaga is the only grape that competes with that of California, and the crop of tho former has materially fallen off the last few years. Tbe Cali fornia raisin has meanwhile improved and is reaching the principal markets iu quantities. There is a sensible agitation afoot in favor of the issue of fractional paper currency. The transmission by mail of small amounts in postage stamps has be come a nuisance to both sender and re- reiver, and the postal note, while having no advantage whatevor over fractional currency, is inconvenient and costs tho sender both money and trouble. Spirits of ammonia is the best thing to clean hair-brushes with, as it does not soften the bristles like soap or soda. If a teaspoon ful of ammonia is mixed with a quart of water, the brush need only be dipped in the solution for a moment and all grease is removed. The brush should then be rinsed in cold water, shaken well and dried in tho air, but not in the sun. XZc. It is unquestionably a crime. Why should the crimo bo condoned T Why should the drunkard be coddled? Half of the drunkenness that makes thousands of homes a boll Is tho dreadful fruit of mis directed leniency. The drunkard is taught to pose as an unfortunate, and so pities and forgivos hlmsolf. Alter he has drank away his manhood he blooms out as a victim of heredity. There never waa a sillier theory born of chronic silliness. Fully half the girls and women don't know how to walk. They twitch, roll, shuttle, teeter, bob, Jerk or waddle. This is the rosult of carelessness or want of pbvslt-al training. Soon the style of walking becomes set, like that of hand writing, and ii hard to change. It is both pitiable and laughable to soo somo girls as they hump and huddle along. Tho bad- gaited pretty girl should try with all her soul's energies to Improve her walk as well as her conversation. 'Twas by her walk the Queeu of Love was known, from tho time or .Kneas to the presont, and no woman can be a genuine queen without a graceful, queenly walk. Franklin A'ew. The following law passed bj the English parliament in 1770, if in force at the pres ent day, would raise quite a commotion among the fair sex. It provided "that all women, of whatever age, rank or profes sion, whether virgins, maids or widows, who shall, after this act, impose upon, so. duce and betray Into matrimony any of his Master's subjects, by virtue of scents, paints, cosmetics, washes, artificial teeth, Spanish wool, iron stays, bolstered hips or bigh-heoled shoes, shull incur the pen alty of the law now iu force agaiust witch craft aud like misdemeanors, and the marriage uuder such circuiustaucea, upon conviction of the offending party, shall be null and void." A new fish at least now to tho waters of the Allegheny River 1 said to have lately become plentiful In that stream, and the only theory as to whore they came from, is that tbe bursting of the Conn- maugh dam emptied its contents of fish into and stocked the Allegheny with one of the finest varieties of fish known. They are very gamey and evidently nf the pike or muscalonge family. Fish of this kind were never known to have been caught In the Allegheny before, though Conetnatigh lake was stocked with thorn. The strange fish takes the minnow or spoon bait, and it is said that some have been taken from thi river ranging from six to ten pounds. Plenantrille Heard. The alove answers first rato for the regu lation fish story, but It's a poor yarn to spin on the people living on tho Alle gheny, who have never heard of, much less seen, any of the now variety.
