Mr. J. II. Diogtnan received a paiuful injury to one of his feet last Saturday at the depot, by having a tie full on it, lliuj housing him up fur a few days. Life is made up of suiull things, the Bnialli-si being the thing who runs in debt for a newspaper aud then or dots it stopped, without paying what he owes for il.Lliz:ird. Messrs'. John Finzor Bros., the celebrated tobacco manufacturers of Louisville, Ky., have our thanks for a crayon picture of Chief Arthur, the head of the Brotherhood of Locomo tive Engineers. The groundhog didu't see much of his shadow "in this sectiou last Sat urday, but the bluebirds haven't ar rived yet ou that account that we have heard, and it is safo to say there'll bo a, trifle of winter yet. The latest reports from the Daw son Ilerrs well, at Dawson Station, say it is showing up for a nice well, a good pay streak having been found iu the second or stray sand, and a better one in lie third or regular sand, which has just been tapped. The County Auditor's Report is published this week, aud, as usual, shows a healthy state of affairs, all of which is attributable to careful and conscientious management. The as sets this year show an excess over all liabilities of $8,195.05. A wing dam is to be erected in the Allegheny river, at the mouth of Kedbank creek, and the contract has been let to a Washington, D. C, firm, for $13,783. Messrs. A. E. Wielmau and J. G. Henry, P. J. Linnou and George Mack, of this place, and J. L. Long, of Freeport, were bidders. Kittanning Times. John Ilidiuger, who was recently tried aud convicted in the Clarion courts of assault and disturbing re ligious meetiogs at Newmansville, was seutenced by Judge Wilson in oue case to pay a Cue of $25 and three months in the workhouse, and in another $500 fine and two years and four months in the Western Penitentiary. In the third case be was found not guilty, but pay the costs, says the Clarion Dcmocml of last week. Benjamin May Esq., of Noriis town, Pa., arrived in town last Wednesday eveuing, and has been warmly greeted by his large circle of old friends here. He has since been visiting friends at Franklin and Ti tusville. We are pleased to note that time deals gently with our old friend and that be is still quite hale and hearty for one of his years. The Mayor's Message. May we bo pardoned for requesting the Mayor to incorporate in his next message the fact that many of our most prominent citizens have been cured of rheuma tism, neuralgia aud kindred com plaints, by Salvation Oil, and that he recommend this valuable medicine to be kept iu every family. Postmaster Haslet Is in receipt of a letter, (which he promptly an swered "in the affirmative,") from an Eastern firm wanting to know what sort of a point this would be for the location of a tanuery. We can in form tbem that no better point can be found in the State. That covers every thing, wo believe, and there is no use looking further. Come on, men. John Charleston, who has the job of "blocking" for Foroman & Derick son at the mouth of Stewarts Run, lost his best team horse by "wind colio" oue day last week. He had refused $300 for the animal a short time previous. John Hood lost oue of his horses some days previous ou the same job. A broken leg took him off. And now comes the news that one of Billy McKee's horses dropped dead from heart disease on the same job Monday. Constable Canfield has posted notices to the effect that one week from next Tuesday, Feb. 19, an elec tion will bo held, at which the follow ing officers will be voted for: Burgess, Collector, Constable, High Constable, Judge of Elections, Assessor, two In spectors of Elections, two Justices of the Peace, two Auditors fur 3 years, two School Directors for 3 years, one Councilman for 3 years. Next week is the last opportunity for announcing, so pick out. the office you waut and send in your name with the fee, one $. German Hill. All are busy hereabouts, while quite a number are nursing bad colds. George Matha met with a mishap which might have proved hie everlast ing, while hauling a loud of ties from Zeigler's mill the other day. Coming down a hill tho sled "slewed" and went over an embankment, throwing George headlong in front of the load. As luck would have it, a log laid near with just enough room to admit of Lis body under which be was thrown, and which supported the load of tics, thus saving him from being crushed. - A similar accident happened Henry Kaman last Friday.- While coming down from Hickory with a load of lumber, and when on that pioce of road known as the "Narrows," the coupling of his sleds broke, leaving the hind Bled turn from the road so as to take the whole load with it. Henry, not being prepared for such proceed ings, was forced to jump down the bank, and falling against a log was quickly overtaken by the load of lum ber, which passed clear over him, only the log beside which be lay saving him. The load not being bound to the front elcds saved the team from going over. George Weller has been rusticating at Emlenton fur awhile back, but we see him among us aguiu. What's the matter with the debating club? It can't be that all the boys are too busy, as we observe some of them go sleighridiog. Ain't it, Will? The question is, did Juhu get that black ou his face trying to crawl up the chimney amongst (be soot? No; it was soot all right enough, but it was put on iu streaks. Boys and girls, if you waut to have a coasting party uow is the time. Don't wait till next summer. We saw Shugart Watson nnd Fred. Glassoer driving over the hill loaded with bark from Zeigler's lumber camp. We don't mean the hill was loaded with baik, but tbeir sleds, aud they were en route for West Hickory. That's what we wanted to say, and having- had our say, we will say no more at this lime. Feb. 5. Old Jake. Scarce, news. Plenty, snow. Wonder what urgent business called E. A. Kudos south last week. An eminent speaker will lecture on temperance at Greenwood, Feb. 13. We are expecting to participate in a "Spelling Bee" at the Fitzgerald school in the near future. The lumbermen are excited about the snow and are wishing that they could put in about eight days in a week. Profs. J. B. Stewart nnd E. S. Whitmer, two of Barnett township's pedagogues, visited their parents on Saturday and Sunday. The young men are jingling their small change in their pockets, and wondering when the W. C. T. U'e. will have another oyster supper at Greenwood. Madam Rumor says one of our best girls is going to emigrate well, into the statu of matrimony. We wish you a safe journey and a prosperous and happy life. I. c. U. Cooksburg, Feb. 5. Strobleton. Mr. Blow of Titusville, the noted barrel manufacturer, was in this prox imity last week making the slave haulers smile by paying tbem their little checks. Rev. J. R. Miller, pastor of the Washington M. E. Church, closed his series of meetings last week with but few converts added. Some of the peo ple can say, another good opportunity Iixb gone by which can never be recalled. Mr. Joseph Allio of Newmansville was visiting friends near here not long since. Once again we hear the merry bells jingling, which reminds us of winter, wheu the gentlemen and lady frieuds are seen swiftly gliding through the snow drifts with tbeir vehicles. Last Saturday was ground hng day. We think if the pets were out all day and had their eyelids propped open they might have seen their shadows, which indicates six weeks of excellent sledding yet to come. Literary society at Red Brush school house, last Friday evening, was large ly attended and a pleasant timo was had in general. We wish them sue cess iu their undertaking. There Is certainly a place in Hades heat ed seven times tho usual warmth for such miscreants as the fiends who have been mutilating horses in Indiana eoti.ity for a year past. There Is no punishment too severe for such damnable villains. Cutting oil tails, cutting out tongues and slashing tho abdomen until the entrails protrude havo been done in a number of cases. The good pooplo of Indiana should catch the fiends and start a little Inquisition of their own. fteynoldsrillc Paper, From nn exchange we take the follow ing which may be beneficial to snmo of our readers: An ingenious swindler is going tho rounds and passing off two dollar bills for live dollars. With a stamp or die he cuts out the largo figure 2 and replaces it with 5 cut out with the satno stamp and exactly fitting the oponlng, a slight tear is made on the bill and a piece of pink paper is pasted over this, holding the figure in lis place. The small figure 2's are then blurred and the bill is passed off as genuine. Congressman Scott's private car has just been turned out of the shops at Manches ter, Ya., and It is a daisy. The stockholders of the Prosquo Isle Gas Company of Erie, have decided to aban don the deep test well for natural gas bo gun In that city in October, 18S7. Tho well is now -1,500 feet deep, next to tho doepost drill well in tho world, the West inghouso well, near Pittsburg, claiming to bo 118 feet doe per. Thus far tho well has cost something over $13,000. The tools were lost last week and their recovery, even if possible, would cost soveral thous and dollars more. The test was made to tap the Trenton rock, and samples of the drillings for the last 200 feet, submitted to State Geologist Leslie, are pronounced to be Trenton rock. Joseph Fleming, the Pittsburgh drug gist, who was convicted in Morcor county of selling liquor without liconso nnd sen tenced to DO days imprisonment in the county Jail and pay a fine of $500, has ap pealed tho case to the Supreme Court. He has been released on 51,000 bail, by a special allocatur pending the decision of that body. Mr. Fleming was convicted in tho Mercer county court on a technical point of law. Ho sent liquor to a pur chaser there by express, colloct on deliv ery. This, tho court held, constituted a sale In that county, and conviction aud sentenco followed. Mr. Fleming is one of tho most extensive druggists In tho city of Pittsburgh. A uativo of tills part of Pennsylvania, says tho Franklin JNVics, who is located in Seattle, Washington Territory, writes homo as follows: "Pennsylvania pooplo out here appear to be doing first doss, but my advico to anybody coining out here, is to stay at home, unless they have $1,000 In cash or have a position before they come, This is a lirst-class place for a man who has money, but a very poor plnco for a man who has to work days' work for a living. Wages are good, but the purchas ing power of money is about one-half of what it is in the east, aud besides there are ten men for every job thero is in Seattle. If our Pennsylvania moneyed men were as willing as Seattle's to invest thoir lucro, their towns would bo far ahead of this place." An Erie county exchango says : A ro ceut important decision of tho Supreme Court of Pennsylvania has caused con sidorablo talk in Erio. Justice Sterrett has decided that all institutions exempt from taxation must bo founded, eudowed and maintained entirely by public or pri vate charity, otherwise the property shall be taxed the same as private property. At the present time no tax is eollocted from these institutions in Erio. The Erio Academy has never boon assessed, al though it is maintained by tuition fees, and tho St. Benedict's Academy, on East Tenth street, has also been oxompt, the latter having always come in under tho constitutional provision that church prop erty shall not be taxed. Both these insti tutions at present time charge a tuition fee and are supported theroby. There are several other places in Erie which never paid taxes. Mr. Benjamin Whitman, a member of the Erio Academy, said that if tho academy was taxed under the decision it would bo quite a burden for tho institu tion, as tho academy takes up considera ble ground right in tho very heart of tho city. Parochial schools whero any tuition is charged will bo taxod under tho deci sion of the Supromo Court. All property now owned by churches, and from which money return is received in any way, will also be taxed. The decision was mado in a Philadelphia case, being an appeal by tho County Commissioner. The Erio Commissioners will proceed to collect the taxes. Itch, Mange, and Scratches on human or animals cured in SO minutes by Wool ford's Sanitary Lotion. This never fails.
