Mr. S. R. Cogau arrived from
West Virginia on Saturday last, and
will renioiu a few weeks with his fam

pleased to state his lumbering business
down there is in a prosperous condi
tion. Wm. F. Blum has taken the agen
cy for the Triumph Mowing Machine,
claimed to be the best in the United
States. He has orders for two or three
already, and is reaJv to wait en all
who come. Every machine fully war
ranted. Cbas. Davis, is borne from Wins
low, Arizona Territory, where he spent
the past ten months in the employ of
the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Ry.
"Monk" was with Ben. Caldwell dur
ing most of his stay west, and reports
having left him well and prosperous.
Clarington has organized a Camp
of the Patriotic Sous of America,
which has already over 70 members.
The members turned out in full re
galia ou the fourth and marched in
the procession, and their appearance
was very favorably commented upon
by all. The new institution is known
as Washington Camp, No. 304, and
its success ia assured.
We join tbe many friends of Mr.
and Mrs. Archie Puffenburg in con
gratulations upon the happy event of
their marriage, notice of which ap
pears in its proper place io this issue.
Both are quite well and favorably
known here and have many friends
auong'bur citizens, all of whom will
wish them a happy aud prosperous fu
ture, and io which tho Republican
joins heartily.
As will be seen by notice in tbis
issue, the Commissioners will receive
sealed proposals for tbe erection of
brick water closets, the drilling of a
well, sewerage, etc, in the court house
yard. Plans and specificatioua of tbe
proposed work can be inspected at
their office, and any other information
obtained. A new system has long
been needed there aud we believe tbe
Commissioners have now adopted tbe
only feasible plan, acd one which
will meet the approbation of all.
Ex District Attorney Goo. II
IIiggins, of Warren, law partner of
Senator O. C. Allen, while returning
from a hunt in the woods near Stone-
bam, Wednesday afternoon, stumbled
and full. The weapon he carried,
which was an improved Winchester
repeating shot gun, was discharged, the
contents of the cartridge going through
his left wrist, shattering it so badly
that it was found necessary to ampu
tale the member above tbe wrist joint.
The State weather-crop bulletin
for the past week says : No general
rain occurred in the State during the
past week. Local showers, varying
in quantity from light to heavy, took
place in several sections, but a number
of observers report "no rain." Ad
average temperature prevailed and the
sunshine was seasonable. These con
ditions were favorable for hayiog and
harvesting and io many couulies, both
are well advanced. Tbe bay crop is a
large one and the wheat yield will be
more than an average. Cum is im
proving rapidly and oats are reported
as beading nicely. The rain defic
iency has not been injurious to grow
iog crops, owing to tbe abundant mois
ture from rains during the preceding
week.
The borough school board met on
the 3d iuet., for the purpose of select
ing teachers for the ensuing term,
There were several applications for the
principalship, and the board took nine
ballots before reaching a choice, Mr.
A. M. Brooks, of Crawford county
being elected on the ninth ballot. The
teachers for the two other rooms are
the same as last year, Mr. Bloomfield
for the intermediate room, and Miss
Kerr for the primary. Mr. B. gave
good satisfaction during bis term,
which was doubtless tbe reason for his
retention, while Miss Kerr is so uni
versally satisfactory to tbe pupils and
patrons, that she virtually has a life
lease of tbe place if she cares for it.
Mr. Brooks comes among us as a
stranger, and must be tried, but we
trust he will pruve the right man iu
the right place. He should be given
, every encouragement by the patrons.
A jolly party of gentlemen from
the vicinity of Sbarpsburg, on the
Allegheny river, arrived here in
special car-on Friday morning last,
and have pitched their tents, six iu
number, at the mouth of Tubbs Run,
and are Laving a royal time of it.
They expect to put in at least a month
of good solid comfort, and for recrea
lion will huut, fish and read their tea
laments, no doubt, aud Ibey couldn't
have selected a pleasanter spot between
Pittsburgh aud Olean fur passing a
few weeks free from business cares and
anxieties. The following is a correct
roster of the camp : Capl. John Young,
Col. Ileouinger, Julio Iluulon, Mike
Leary, Lewis De Bold, William
Thompson, Geo. Ebhman, Nicholas
Esbman, Lewis Gable, John Burl,
Juhn Steiu. These gentlemen will be
joined by others of their friends be
longing to tbe club during tbeir stay.
A four year old son of W. C.
Alters died suddenly last Saturday.
The little fellow was taken sick at a
meal, vomited twice, went to sleep,
aud then into a stupor from which it
was impossible to arouse him, death
supervening in about six hours. The
cause being obscure, a post mortem ex
amination was decided on. Tbe as
tonishing discovery was made that a
piece of swallowed chewing gum had
lodged in the pylorio orifice, complete
ly blocking the passage between tbe
stomach, aud the bowels. But what
puzzles the physicians is why it should
cause death in so short a time. luf
touts Keus. This is the child which
died at Braceville, mention of which
was made in the Republican at the
time. It should be the meant of put
ting a stop to the senseless habit of
gum cbewiug, which has become so
remarkably prevalent of late among
old and youDg. It is by no menus the
first case of the kind, aud reports of
similar deaths are becoming alarming
ly frequent.
The hundred and twelfth anni
versary of our Independence "has
come and went," and from all reports
it was of about tbe rogulation pattern
io the surrounding country. Tiooesta
celebrated, but didn't disjoint herself
in the effort, that we have heard of.
In fact her demonstration wa'nt hard
ly up to the average size. Tbe crowd
was only fair, aud the amusemeuta
ditto. Tbe races such of 'em as
took place weren't heavy, but per
haps as heavy as tho prizes offered
would justify. Hon. J. B. Agnew's
speech occupied about 10 minutes iu
its delivery, which is pleuly long fur
a Fourth of July oration. In that
time Mr. Agoew said a good deal, all
of which was very happily received
by his audience. Mr. Irwin also talk
ed at considerable leogth. Hon. C.
A. Randall read the Declaration of
Independence, which one fellow re
marked was the "best speech in the
busioess." Altogether tbe day passed
off vtry pleasantly and quietly, and
will long be remembered, Ac, Ac.
The following item taken from
tho Austin, Potter Co., Autograph of
the 5th inst., will be read with much
regret by the many friends of the par
ties mentioned, who were well known
to many of our readers: "On Friday
evening last Mr. B. De McClure re
ceived the sad intelligence from Wat'
erford that his wife, A. Virginia, was
dead. It ia with regret that we are
called upon to chronicle the death of
this estimable lady, although while
visiting her husband and other friends
in this place only a few weeks since,
it was evident that she would soon fall
a victim to that dreaded enemy, con
sumption. She was the daughter of
C. W. S. Anderson Esq., of Water
ford, Pa., at whose residence she died.
Mr. McClure returned from Water-
ford on Tuesday. The Autograph,
with his many friends of Austin, ex
tend to him the band of sympathy in
his sad bereavement.
The Oil City Derrick is eudcavor
ing to attract attention to itself by
publishing columns of bog wash re
lating to the Everhart murder. The
most careful research of the eutire
series of articles fails to bring to light
a single new feature in the tragedy.
It is simply a poor rehash of old
stories. Clarion Jacksonian. Bro.
Carlisle is in the habit of blurting out
a heap o' truths in tbe course of a
year's writings, but he has at no time
struck tho nail head any fairer blow
than io this item. Th" Derrick re
hasher is shoved out on 1 .s mission of
beggiug subscribers to the "weakly"
about once a week, and generally re
turns with a bundle of slush that is
dished out simply to satisfy the crav
ing for news on this interesting topic,
The most common-place facts are
written up in a sensational and mis
leading manner, with utter disregard
for the truth, while, as the above quo
tation states, there is never a new
feature brought to light. It will soon
be time for another dose, as the sheet
will want to dispose of a few extra
copies to keep the machine runuiug,
but there will be nothing new. See if
there is.
On the night of the 27th ult., the
town was visited by sneak thieves who
made a sort of general raid on the
private houses of the north ward. N
S. Foreman's house was visited, and
Mr. F. relieved of his gold watch,
valued at about $75, and his pocket
book containing about $60 In cash was
taken. Tlieso articles were iu his
room, not over six feet from where he
slept. Jacob Hood's pant9 were taken
out of his room aod left lying near the
gate. John Hood's house was also
entered, as was also D. W. Clark's,
Patrick Joyce's, and L. J Hopkinj'
cellar. Nothing of value was missing
from these places, but the thieves left
unmistakable evidences of their pres
eoce, nearly all of ihe entrances being
etTecied through windows. Mrs. Clark
was awake and saw a man's shadow
through the open door next her room,
hut supposed it to be ber son, until
she spoke, when the culprit fled. One
night last week parties were prowling
around Wm. Lawreuce's premises,
across tbe creek and tried all tbe
doors, but were frightened away by
the dog which kept up a continuous
barking. On another night an effort
was made to force an entrance into
James Thomas' house, also across tbe
creek, but James succeeded in keeping
them out. Tbis was about the boldest
attempt that was made. Of course
everybody ia on guard now;'1ut after
the excitement dies down we may look
fur more, in which case we hope to
bear of some of these sneaks carrying
off a little cold lead. Let tbem have
it straight. It's about tbe most effect
ual way of stopping it, aod the cur
who will go prowling around in that
kind of business is better dead than
alive anyway.
A Serious Accident.
Last Friday about noon Wm. Hun
ter, who lives at the mouth of little
Coon creek, a short distance above
Nebraska, aod who is employed on
tbe little lumber railroad of Collins &
Co., met with a frightful accident.
from the effects of which, we are sorry
to say, he will not likely ever fully
recover. The train of cars at the
head of the railroad had just been
loaded with logs, and was starting
down tbe grade, when the car on
which Mr. Hunter bad taken bis posi
tion ran off the track. He quickly
attempted to get out of tbe way of the
next car which was very close, but was
unable to make his escape, and the
logs came down in such a manner as
to catch Mr. Hunter about the hips,
crushing him very badly. About
three inches of the lower portion of
the spiue was broken oil', aud the right
hip bones were badly fractured, just
to what extent is impossible at present
to state. Dr. Morrow, who happened
to be in the vicinity at the time, was
called and gave what relief was possi
ble with the means at band, but fouud
the injured man iu such agony aa to
make a thorough examination imprac
ticable. Assisted by Dr. Siggios, and
tbe administering of proper anesthet
ics, ho made a fuller examination
shortly aftorward, when the injuries
were found to be as above stated.
Mr. Hunter is a man noted for his
industry and his serious misfortune is
a matter of very general regret among
his numerous friends and neighbors.
At last accounts be was getting along
as well as could be expocted.
Later Dr. Morrow informs us
that Mr. Hunter is worse and cannot
survive.
Porkey Points.
The Fourth the ever glorious
was duly celebrated in Porkey. Early
in the morning the "eagles" began to
scream from the various hen roosts,
the flags to wave, and tbe glycerine to
boom, while numerous patriotic dogs
helped swell the bound of rejoicing.
About 1 p. m. there was a pleasant
gathering of friends and neighbors at
the picnic ground. Pleuty of chickens
nicely cooked, put iu an appearace,
and the small boy was so happy ho
even forgot the festive fire-cracker.
But alas! all bumau happiness is
short lived, and tbe inner man was
obliged to go unsatisfied fur tbe time
being, all on account of the gentle
rain. The hospitable roof of J. II.
McBride was conveniently near, how
ever, and soon another assault was be
ing made on the goodies. In the eve
uiug a hop was in progress that was
well atteoded ; every one who partici
pated reported an enjoyable time, as
all objectionable element was absent.
Mrs. Chas. French of Middletown,
is ill with the measles.
Mr. and Mrs. N. Moore and Mies
Stoles of Warren, were in Porkey
Suuday, the guests of Mrs. Mason.
Mr. aod Mrs. Wm. Hawks of Ball
town started for Chautauqua Tuesday.
Miss May McMaster of Porkey is
visiting friends iu Mercer county.
It is expected that there will be ser
vices in Porkey, Suuday at 10 a. m.,
conducted by Rev. Rumberger. The
Balltown people should bear in mind
that Porkey contributes largely to
ward church purposes, consequently,
while tbe school house is undergoing
repairs, we are entitled to services.
