THE FOREST REPUBLICAN.
J . t. WtNK,
iDITCft OMIITCH.
wnuKsD.w, march 2. ism.
The Capitol at Washington was
truck by lightning the other day, but
Free Trader Mill paiil ho attention
whatever to the warning. He defies
the lightning at ioiolcot'y a' he tloea
the country.
The Free Trade indtctueut against
Mr. Randall ia in subntance that Le ia
more loyal to American industries
than to the party which aim to destroy
them, Ia the Republican faith that
it a virtue; in the Democratic it it a
crime.
The river and harbor bill, which
will be reported in the Hons this
week, appropriate nineteen millions
to Ibo improvement of rivers and har
bors. It ia the largest expenditure
ever reported tJ Ccngres. The Alle
gheny river ii on fur $25,000, while
the llerr'a Island improvement gets
an additional 135,000 slice.
Taie, the Democratic State Treas
urer of Kentucky, it short over $250,
O00, with aeveral districts to hear from,
as it were. There's great chance for
Cleveland to get a- iellow that will
help him out on the snrplus. Stealing
it it about the only means the admin
istration will be able to devise to get
rid of it, and they might as well be
gin first at last.
The spectacle of a lot of literary
men who demand Free Trade in the
productions of muscle urging Protec
tion in tho shape of international
copyright for productions of mind is
a fine exhibition of the eccentricity of
genius. If the gentlemen were to
wipe the duat off their spectacles tbey
would see that any sauce good enough
for the literary goose should be equally
fit for the industrial gander.
Where the Answer will Come
Froj. "What shall I say of a tariff
for protection ?" said the lion. Frank
Hard at a meetiog in St. Paul last
Saturday night. Mr. Hurd can say
what he likes, and the effect will not
be momentous. But if his question
ahould be pot next fall to the States of
rew York, Connecticut and New Jer
sey, they will answer that they are for
a protective tariff, and their reply will
be felt all over the country, as it was
felt when given in the Presidential
lectioa of 1880. New York Sun.
Chief Justice Waite, of the TJ.
S. Supreme Court, died suddenly of
pneumonia on Friday morning laet.
Morrison R. Waite waa born at Lyme,
Connecticut, November 20tb, 1816,
and graduated as an A. B. from Yale
in 1837. After his admission to the
. bar he removed to Ohio, where be
practiced euoceeefully in Maumee City
aud Toledo. He was a member of the
State Legislature j0 1849, and one of
the arbiters of the Geneva tribunal in
1872. He was president of the Ohio
Constitutional Convention in 1873,
and oo January 21st, 1874, waa ap-
JlVabjt -rresidcnl Grant to his
preseut position. His course since bis
appointment was singularly free from
political or personal prejudice.
The discussion of a successor to the
late Chief Justice Waite has already
begun, and in this connection the
Philadelphia Prut offers the following
suggestion ; The President has never
shown much regard for Pennsylvania,
but why not come here for a new
judge T He could take either Judge
Clark or Judge Truokey from the
State Supreme Bench without making
a mistake. They are Democrats who
have deservedly won high honors and
the selection of either would be no
more a compliment to the State or the
man than a credit to the President.
Mr. Cleveland can afford to put aside
any prejudice be may have against
t eousyivaoia m order to make so ad
mirable an addition to the Supreme
xjouuq oi me united (states.
The editor of the Philadelphia Prut,
Mr. Chas. Emory Smith who is now in
Washington, writes as follows to his
psper of the impending danger which
threatens the country in the passage of
the Mills tariff bill: It ia high time
the country should wake up to the
real gravity of the tariff situation
No alarm has been felt through the
land because nobody away from the
capital has supposed there was any se
.i . . i . .i ..... . . .

ujriuiug uaa it couia pass, mere
has been a false sense of security be
cause there has been a false id da of the
possibilities. We have all treated the
Mills bill as a great wrong but not as
an immiueot menace. We roust now
face and fight it not merely as an at
tempted iniquity but as an immediate
peril, it may as well be understood
at once that there is real danger that
this bill, somewhat modified, may pass
the House and that a desperate effort
will be made to force it through the
Senate. A careful aud not hasty sur
vey here on the ground discloses risks
and threatening that have not been
appreciated at a distance. The ques
tion has its bearings both industrially
aod politically, and all concerned will
reahie the difference between con
flicting an attack when it is a remote
haiard ncl wbou it is an impending
probability.
