    TME rCRFST REPUBLICAN.
t. W&K,
vtrx.2AV, M.vncn :i, ism.
Op Tiir sixteen votes against the
Dependant Pension Bill wbicb passed
t ho Senate a few Jays ago cvary one
Mas Deuiucraiio. Of courso this
doesn't moan an thing.
It 19 said Mr. Blaine will be home
in June, which announcement is cal
culated to atari thn cold chills up and
down ft Democrat's back.
Ihk chief trouble with Free-trader
Mills as a leader is that he wants to
-drive and can't, lie represents the
melancholy picture of a party tjraut
with all a tyrant's arrogance and Done
f a tyrant's power.
Judging from his language, Mr.
Win. L. Scott, of Erie, one of the
leaders of the free trade w ing of the
Democracy of Pennsylvania, is doubt
ful of the passage of the Mills tariff
reduction bill. There's no reason for
doubt on the subject. The Mills free
trade bill will not pass.
The ambitious programme to con
Vert Michigan into a Democratic State
is ezoitiog less enthusiasm than it did
before Mr. Mills announced his pur
joi9 of putting salt and lumber on the
free Hat. That programme is likely
to have cause for an action for aban
donment against the Free trade boom
ers. Clearfield Journal.
Meat-axe Mills bad coal, coke,
.iron ore, pyrites, lead ore, copper ore
-wd mineral substances on his original
iVee list; but he found that only one,
copper ore, came exclusively from a
Republican state, and it is the only
-one on which he has even reduced
-duties. This is probably what the
.Free trade papers mean by calling bis
bill a "judicious' reduction.
Hewett, the democratic mayor of
New York refused to allow the Irish
flag to be raised on the city hall on
St. Patrick's Day. The prescct ad
ministration is "English you know."
The time honored deiudcratic custom
has been to stow the Irish flag away
in the garret or cellar, and only bring
.it out on election days. Meadvilh
Gazette.
The fact that ex Senator CoDkling
-was caught in the streets of New York
by the recent blizzard and nearly per
ished, should bo sufficient to draw out
another olub with resolutious endors
ing him for the Presidency. The ad
ditional fact that he said in a recent
interview that Blaine is no statesman,
-will also most likely give his "boom"
boost.
The effort of the Democratic news
papers to make it appear that the Re
publican minority in the House is re
sponsible for the failure of the Demo
cratio majority to agree upon a policy
of revenue reduction is as comio as
anything in the recent history of the
United States. The Democrats have
fcceo entrusted with a responsibility
jwhich is clearly many times too big
The Philadelphia Frets, having ob
tained the responcs of the Republican
coouty committees of Pennsylvania to
the question as to their presidential
choice now that Mr. Blaine is out of
the field, sums op the result as follows :
"There is no concentration of opinion
-whatever. The choice of the chairmen
is divided between Senators Cameron,
filit-rmsn, Harrison, Allison and Quay,
Mr. Depew, Judge Gresbam and oth
ers; but no one man gets more than
fourth of the entire number, and even
the preferences indicated are put forth
to a teutative and uocertaio way."
Tub esteemed Record congratulates
the Democrats of Congressman Buck
alew's borne county for having "spoken
-with do uucertain voice in behalf of
President Cleveland's tariff reform
message." Now and then a Demo
xrratio committee, a Democratic club
or a Jot of otnee holders, having no
responsibility to anybody, and desiriDg
merely to keep in the good graces cl
the man who dioptneca the offices,
cpeak with no uncertain voice ia be
half of the Free trade rr.cfsrge. If
the President should come out '.o-roor
row with a Proieuiiou iae::::;;a l!:?y
would ta along a Tier that in the same
' pell-mell fashion, tumbling over each
other iu the effort to get as near the
feet of power as possible. No one is
able to see, however, that the Demo
cratic party is enthusiastically uuitfd
in support of tbo Free-trade message.
The foregoing remarks from the Phil
adelphia Prett will apply very forcibly
to the Democracy of every county in
tbe State. If President Cleveland
wire to pat Great Britiau on the buck
every 6 flee u tuioutei, anj with the
same frequency admiointer a severe
kick to America and its industrica, the
good old chestnut, "we heartily en
dorse," etc., would form a part of the
average Democratic resolves with the
rame monotonous regularity.
