the creek.
Mr. C. K. Bradbury has erected
a neat little dwelling house on his lot
near the Ilenage house, at the head of
Helen St.
We are sorry to learn that our
old friend Mr. Johu Stroup, of Dutch
Hill, is lying very low with pneumonia,
and hope he may take a turn for the
butter soon.
Sleighs are again brought into
play hereabouts, while at Buffalo, N.
Y., the snow is reported 15 feet deep
in tnaoy places. And next Tuesday
is the first day of spring.
Hereafter all uncalled fur postal
cards will be relumed to the writer
after 30 days, and advertised letters
will be held but two weeks instead of
four, as heretofore, before being sent
back to the dead letter office at Wash
itiglon.
Cashier Tomlioson and butcher
Blicb, the two men who were shot by
bank robber Kimball, at Bradford
last week, have both since died.
Kimball was buried in Millerstown,
Butler couuty. He was raised near
rieasaotville.
Mr. L. J. Hopkins left for the
East yesterday, which means that
spring is coming, notwithstanding wiu
ter is just now lingering in her lap a
little, and the people may look out for
a big supply of fresh spring goods in
a few days ; a real treat.
Messrs. Scowden & Clark expect
to have a first class carriage painter
here this week or the first of oext.
While here, if any of the people want
anything in bis line done, this would
be an excellent opportunity to take
advantage of. Orders should be left
with the firm.
Two men named Myers and liar
ringtoo, brakemeo on the W. N. Y. &
P. It'y, were arrested at Hickory last
week, charged with furnishing coal to
people at that station, by dumping it
from the trains as they passed. They
will have a hearing before 'Squire
Brennan to-day.
Mr. James E. Kerr of Barnett
township, died, after a lingering illuess,
of cancer of the stomach, at his home
near Clarington, on Tuesday, March
6th, 1888, aged 27 years. Funeral
services were conducted by Rev. Delo
at the M. E. Church, in Clarington,
od Wednesday at 2 o'clock p. m.
Word was received here last week
by friends of the family, that Roger,
the eight-year old son of Dr. Blaine,
who is now in Cincinnati, had fallen
from a second story veranda, a dis
tance of about 15 feet, sustaining se
rious if not fatal injury. The little
fellow's skull is said to have been bad
ly fractured.
Six or eight tramps took tea with
the borough Monday night. The
proper thing for the authorities to do
is to ordain that every tramp shall
earn his board and lodging while he
remains a guest of the town, and then
rigidly enforce the ordinance. This
has been tried and is a very effectual
cure for the tramp nuisance.
The dwelling house of Mr. George
Braden, near liorth Pine Grove, in
Barnett twp., this county, was totally
destroyed by fire on Saturday last.
We understand none of the household
goods, except an organ and a few
chairs, were saved, but are without
further particulars as to cause of the
fire, amount of loss, etc
Collector Canfield gives warning
hereby that all delinquent taxables
must come down with the ready "John
Davis" during this month else there'll
be "blood on the moon." He will be
obliged to settle with the authorities
in the meantime, and declares "by the
long bandied spoons" that be must
have his money.
Sullivan, the great John L. didn't
knock Mitchell, the English champion,
out to any great extent in their fight
in France on Saturday last. The fight
lasted for 39 rounds and was then
called a draw, one being about as
much punished as the other, although
Mitchell generally went down when
John L. reached for him with his
"right."
The blizzard which set iu on Sua
day and has been blizzing around very
unceremoniously ever since, has been
about the severest we have had in this
oountry during the winter. With
mercury ranging about the zero ntaik
and a howliug, 60-mile-a-miuute wind
z'g'zagging around the edges, it is cal
culated to give ene a very lively ap
preciation of the advantages of natural
gas as a fuel.
Mrs. Dr. Hunter let the contract
last week to Foreman & Hepler for
the erection of a new mansion on her
lot on the west side of Elm St., oppo
site Joseph Grove's property. The
dimensions are to be 38x44, and when
completed will mark another substan
tial acquisition to the improvement of
our town. Mason Joyce baa contract
ed for the stoue work and will com
mence operations soon as the weather
will permit.
On Monday of last week Mr.
Peter Lin del was thrown from bis
hack while driving along the narrows
above Little Hickory, striking on his
head and iuflicting such severe injury
that for some lime he was supposed to
be dead. He was accompanied by his
father in law, Judge Hill and son,
who assisted him to his home near
East Hickory, where he regained con
sciousness in about three hours. At
last accounts he was gaining, but is
still in rather a critical condition.
Mr. David Bowman died at his
residence in Ty lersburg, Clarion coun
ty, on Thursday morning last. Al
(hough be had beeu in delicate health
for some time past, his death was rath
er unexpected. Mr. Bowman was one
of the earliest settlers of this section,
and was universally esteemed as a
most honorable and upright citizen,
having by frugality and strict integ
rity in all his dealings amassed a
handsome competence, which made
bim quite comfortable in his declining
years, so far as this world's goods were
concerned. He was aged about 73
years and leaves several grown chil
dren besides a large circle of friends
and acquaintances to mourn bis loss.
From a letter from the family of
Mr. O. B. Hoskios, who recently re
moved to Sau Diego, Cal., we take the
liberty to quote the following: "I
wish I could transport all my friends
to this charmed spot. The bright sun
shine, air as balmy as June, without
the heat, flowers growing everywhere,
no fires, and a freshness and elasticity
in the temperature I never found else
where at any season of year. If peo
ple cannot enjoy life here they can't
anywhere, and if tbey are sick and
can't get well, it is not the fault of the
climate. For a wide awake live town
this takes the lead. Magnificent
buildings in all directions, and, as
Mark Twain said of Minneapolis, ''l0e
only reason for no inorebuildiog being
done is, waut of sidewalks to put the
materials on.' It surely is so here."
"Spiritism and spiritualistic man
ifestations," says the Franklin News,
"are getting to be the fashionable
racket in the surrouodiag towns.
Meadville is getting worked up, and
New Castle society is all agog with it.
Parlor seances are held almost nightly.
The priocipal medium there la a ser
vant io the employ of a wealthy widow.
At a recent seance a widow called up
the spirit of her husband, who had
been a wealthy man, an active church
member, and was supposed to be en
joying eternal bliss of the first quality.
The widow got a startling racket when,
in answer to one of her questions, he
said, 'I am in belli' and went on with
an inventory of the tortures be was
enduring." Tiooesta was promised a
few manifestations this week, but thus
far the mediums have failed to ma
terialize. A newly elected Congressman
said last week, speaking of an old
friend who had voted against him.
"Now there's notbiog mean aboot me,
for when I saw that fellow sufferiog
with a terrible cough, I forgave his
going back on me and told him to use
Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup.
Death of Mrs. Rachel Siggins.
The announcement of the sudden
death of Mrs. Rachel Siggins, of West
Hickory, ou Sabbath afternoon last,
proved a severe shock to the many
fi lends of that esteemed lady in this
community. While the family were
sitting at the dinner table, Mrs. Sig
gins waa stricken with apoplexy and
expired instantly; np to tbat moment
her health was all that she could wish.
She was the widow of the late George
Siggins, the mother of nine children,
eight daughters and one son, Mr. Orion
Siggins, all of whom survive her, Al
moBt from childhood she has been a
devout member of the Methodist
Church, a noble Christian woman,
abounding in good works, and her de
mise will be a sad blow to all her
frieods far and near, while the com
munity in which she lived is called
upon to mourn the loss of one whose
every act and deed wss calculated to
elevate and better the condition of
those about her. As one has aptly
put it, their home was known far aod
wide as an abode of intelligence, hos
pitality and the Christian virtues.
Mrs. Siggins was about 70 years of
age. The funeral services were held
at the family residence yesterday af
ternoon, and were attended by a large
concourse of people, many from this
place being present. Her remains
were laid to rest by the side of those
of her husband, In the private burial
lot of the family.
The Union Scout.
This popular war drama will be
given at Skating Riok Hall, Tionesta,
on Wednesday aod Thursday evenings
next, March 21 and 22, under the di
rection of Mr. J. W. Cleroson, a come
dian of well known ability, assisted by
Kick Thompson Camp, S. of V. and
a host of ladies and gentlemen, num
bering upward of forty. The play
represents Sherman's march through
Georgia, and is full of thrilling scenes
of that memorable event. The pro
ceeda will go to the benefit of Sons of
Veterans, who have engaged the ser
vices of Mr. Clerason at considerable
expense, and will leave nothing uodone
to give a splendid entertainment. Ad
mission 25 and 35 cents. Don't forget
the dates.
HERE AND THERE.
Tho Commissioners of Greene county
are about to take steps to secure the co
operation of Commissioners throughout
the State to put forth an effort to secure
the passage of a bill that will enable the
county officials to work prisoners confined
in the jails on public roads and other pub
lic improvements which are kept up at
the expense of the county,
It shall be tho duty of each Assessor and
Assistant Assessor to keep an account of
the several days by him actually employ
ed is the performance of his duties, and
to make return of the same to the Com
missioners of the county, verified by his
oath or affirmation ; and for each day nec
essarily so employed he shall receive the
sum of (2.00. So says the new law, ap
proved May 24, 18S7.
It is said that Mr. Beecher, long before
he died, prepared a full statement of all
tho facts in the Beechor-Tilton scandal
and trial, and this will be printed shortly.
The statement bears the certificate of Mrs.
Beecher and her son as to Its genuineness.
As there were others implicated, in which
statements all concur, in time some of
those other actors will be moved to say
something. It is an interesting subject in
any light, but would be extremely so
could the public be made to believe that
the bottom facta were to be told.

TRUTH UNADOBNED.
The Idaho Democrat publishes the
advertisement which we reprint below.
Oo first reading it, we judged it, says
the Christian Union, to be either a
hoax or a temperance agitator's ingen.
ious attempt to produce a temperance
sensation. But, sending for informa
tion to a subsoriber of the Christian
Union at Boite City, where this ad
vertisement appears, we are assnred
tbat it is a genuine liquor saloon.
There is a mystery about this "naked
truth" advertisement which we do not
pretend to solve. But it is certainly
the truth unadorned.

The symptoms of Riliousness arc nn
