-The ice in the river commenced
moving at this point about 9 o'clock
on Thursday evening last, and after a
little hesitaucy parsed out with scarce
ly enough fuss to be noticeable. The
creek ice commenced moving above
tbe bridge on Sunday afternooo, but
at tbe tnoutb did not break up, and
the heavy freezing of the past few
nights have made it more solid thao
ever. Ihe back channel froze over oil
Thursday night after tbe ice had gone
out, and is now quite solid again. Tbe
oldest inhabitant cocoes to the front
once more with the startling intelli
gence that never in his days has the
ice passed out of the river when the
water was as low as now.
The following seasonable bint
from tbe Fraoklin Newt will fit all
towns where natural gas is used for
fuel: In time people in tbe natnrnl
gas region will probably learo that
accidental fires are just as liable to
arise from gas fuel as from coal. Tbe
danger is even greater. If too strong
a coal fire is built and neglected, it
will soon begin to exhaust, and thus
correct itself. But if tbe gas be care
lessly turned on too strong and then
left lu itself, it will remain too strong ;
io fact the beat becomes cumulative,
increasing like that of a lamp io whicb
the wick is too high, Tbe gas fire is
a constant and permeating beat Tbe
secret of lamp explosions and myster
ious basement fires is net bard to fiod,
aod housekeepers aod janitors may
well bear in mind these precautionary
biota. Gas fires and petroleum lichts,
sensibly managed, are the best aud as
safe as any in the world.

Court Minutes.
At this writing there is very little
court news to give. On Monday af
ternoon the usual routine of hearing
the constable's returns, and charging
the grand jury was about all that took
place. There being very little to come
before the grand jury, that body fin
ished up its labors and were discharged
in tho evening. 'Tbey acted on seven
bills of indictment, four of which were
ignored, and three returned "true
bills." These were against Aquilla
Mong, Calvin Ganoe, and Chas. M.
Kelly for breaking jail. - A recom
mendation was made that boards be
erected or placed on the creek bridge
to pteveot the snow from blowing off,
thus causing it to become bare while
the sleighing is good. They further
repeated the recommendation of a
former grand jury, that suitable guards
or lattice work be placed in front of
tbe south windows of the jail so as to
prevent friends of prisoners from fur
nishing them with instruments with
which to tuake their escape.

A deciaion was rendered in the United
Stato Supreme Court on Monday of last
week, upon the application for a rehearing
of the case of Wll'.iani I). Andrews and
others against George Hovey, which is
widely known as "Tbe Driven Well Cae."
This Court held that the patent imnod to
Nolson W. Urecn in 1871 for an Improve
ment in the method of nonxtructing arte
sian wells was invalid because the inven
tion covered by it was in public use mere
than two years before Oreen applied for
the patent. The Court, after an exhaust
ive review of the wholo csc, adheres to
its decision, and denies the application
for a rehearing. Opinion by Juitice
Blatchford.

it. Wednesday afternoon Fred. Cum

llna and whilo driving thoughtlessly
through the town the ponies took it into
heir beads to indulge in their usual pas
time. They started down the road on the
run. The last time they ran away they
straddled a cable on the Suspension bridge
and the tongue of the wagon slid up tbe
cable so far that it lifted tho horses about
two feet off the ground where they hung
until the harness was cut and they were
let down. This time they mule for at
bouse, straight for the front door. Tho
end of the wagon tongue splintered the
door and one of the horses jumped into
tho house, while tho other fell up against
the side of the building. There was no
damage done except the smashing of tbe
door, tbe breaking of a few straps on tbe
harness, apd waking up Cummings,

WHAT AMI TO DO?
The symptoms of biliousness are un
happily but too well known. Tbey tlitlor
in dittoreut individuals to some extent.
A Bilious man is sejdoiu a break last eater.
Too frequently, alas, he haa au excellent
uppetite lor liuuids but none for solids of
a morning. Ins tonuue will hardly bear
inspection at any time; If it is not white
and furred, it is rouxh. at all events.
The digestive system is wholly out of
order and Hiurrhea or Constipation may
he a symptom or the two may alternate.
There are olten Hemorrhoids or even loss
at blood. There may !m) giddiness and
otleo headache and acidity or flatulence
and tenderness iu the pit of the stomach.
To correct all this if not ellW-t a cure try
Greeu's August Flower, it costs but a tri
