The free trade journals of tbe country have about abandoned the claim that American wages are as low as foreign wages. The claim was so absurd aud ridiculous, and was so eas ily disproved, that they found it did more harm than good to their cause. So now the most of them have aban doned it, and they have constructed Aipon its grave, as it were, this jircpu eitrfcit--. "Tbe truth is that American labor is just as cheap as any other labor on me eann. ine better wages paid is only the result of larger productivity. Philadelphia Eecord. "Larger productivity" is good. At the same time, without discussing tbe meaning of "larger productivity," which is certainly elastic enough to supply avenues of escape for the wild at freo trade dreamer, the American workiuRtnan will continue to congrat ulate himself upon the fact thus ad ruitted by bis free trade persecutor that he is paid "better wages" than auy otner laoorer on earth, lbw is about all he cares for. . If he gets $3 where the foreign laborer gets $1, it matters little to him what tbe cause may be. "Larger productivity," what ever that may mean, may be the cause of it. If it is he will give three cheers for Captain Larger Productivity. At tbe same time he will take good care to vote against tbe party that would atop "Larger Productivity." But the shift in position that is here attempted is dishonest. Free trade journals that have persisted for many years in the most outrageous lying with respect to the wages of American and foreign labor, cannot now condone their past sins by this admission. That they were ly'iBg, tbe thousands of em igrants that were daily crowding our fehores testified, and confession now is ctily an aggravatiou of their offense, because they do it solely that they may start a new and more plausible lie, and one more difficult to refute. Aoanias remains; he baa simply changed his coat. It will be well for the American Protectionist to keep an eye on the "larger productivity" ar gument of the free traders, in the ap proaching campaign. llarruburg TtU egraph. Senator Quay on Monday Intro daced a bill to pension soldiers who were confined in rebel prisons during the war. It provides that for impris onment of more than 2 months and less than G months they shall receive half peusion ; for mors than 6 months and less than 12 months a three quarters pension; and for 12 months or more a full pension. It also provides that the prisoners shall recoive pay at tbe rate of f 2 a day during tho time they were imprisoned. Senator Quay is getting there with both feet in his new Senatorial duties. He believes in looking well after the interests of bis old comrades in arms. W. C. T. TJ. COLUMN. CbKfticfcd bjf the Tionrsta t'ni'on. The W. C. T. On its great carts about town should be writ ten, "Q iarrels brewed at short notice." On its advertisements should be print ed, "Any and all kinds of mischief furnished, at the lowest price, and warranted to last a life time." Those splendid vehicles, drawn by the noblest horses in the street, grind a little child to a mangled, bloody mass of quiver ing pulp at every corner. But yet they are permitted to run. They dis member a woman of all ber happiness on every block yet they are permit ted to run because the quivering pal pitating victims are not seen. Yet some of us see these things as they are. We read tbe proud name of the brew er, and contrast the fine house, in which' he lives, with tbe hovel which his trade has made; and we wonder what the common Father will say at last to these wicked brothers who have painted their dwellings with the blood of their brothers. For there cometh a day when the curse of curses shall itself be cursed by Him who has pow er to curse, and none can hies. Even now it is written, "cursed be he that putteth the cup to his brother's lips." Rev. Emory Uayner. SCIENCE VEKSCS MODERATION. The French Journal of Hygiene es timates the probabilities of life for moderate drinkers and total abstainers as follows; Moderate Drinkers. At 20 they may expect to live 15 years. At 30 they may expect to live 12 years. At 40 they may expect to live 10 years. At 50 they may expect to live 8 years. lotal Abstainers. At 20 they may expect to live 40 years. At 30 they may expect to live 36 years. At 40 they may expect to live 28 years. At 50 they may expect to live 21 years. ' Frances . Willard concludes a talk to our W. C. T. U. sisters in Kansas in these words: "No woman of you liveth to herself in this great mat ter, but behind each one vho casts a ballot stands an army invisible yet real who will cast their ballots sooner if you are loyal to yours, and later, or not at all, if you hold yours light ly, or throw it aside altogether. Let me beseech you to make this duty a subject of serious reflection and earnest prayer. "Evil is wrought from want of thought more than from want ot Heart, Dy women as well as by men. The eyes of the white ribbon women all over the world are turned toward you; they are listening to know your verdict; they are watch ing your 283 cities to see if you reg ister. Do not let your vote on tbe fifth of April next, fall below last year's famous aggregate of tuenty tix thousand ; do not let tbera be disap pointed ia their estimate of your in telligence, your loyalty, and your de votion. Dr. Hargreaves says: "It is a great mistake to think that malt liquors are lets injurious than brandy or whis ky. What malt liquors lack in ajco holic strength is made op by drinking a larger quantity. While the drinker would be content with a gill of spir its, he will drink a quart of ale or beer, and not feel satisfied, and thus he will driok mote alcohol than if he bad taken braudy or;wbibky.Druuk eoueos by beer is worse than by ar dent spirits, aod there are more malt liquor drunkards than whisky drunk ards." Good resolutions are often like a loosely-tied cord on the firBt strain of temptation they slip. Tbey should be tied in a hard knot of prayer, aod then they should be kept tight and firm by stretching godward." Taste not, handle not, touch not, should be inscribed upon every vessel that contains spirits in tbe house of a man who Uhes to be cured of intern-perance.--Dr. Benjamin Iiush, 1785.
