In view of these facts and the present pension law, It Is sensible to conclude that the Dopendont Pension Bill wss aim ply a bridge by which these, "especially the latter class," might raid upon tbe treasury of the U. 8. Fo Justlco-loving, sensible roan would attach such a palpa ble, unjust and false construction to said bill. The dead-beat class were first to present themselves for "hard tack," and In like manner they have long before this time got their work in under the present law, in the Pension Department. But, with the permission of the editor of this paper, we shall hereaftor speak of another class of old Soldiers. We shall endeavor to set forth our own views of the matter. We have nothing in view save Justice to our worthy comrades, and God knows we have nothing to lose, and only ask a careful consideration at the hands of all before being criticised. J. Let evei y Republic an keep an eye on the Bell-Weather of the National Democrat shebang; the worst calamity that could befal us would be bis making any one believe be will help any of our candidates. The terms and conditions of the contracts signed by the producers contemplates the shutting in for one year of one half of the production, based on the' guages of wells during July and August ; the entire stoppage of tbe drill for tbe tame length of time. No glycerine is to be used in tbe same time and no wells ara to be cleaned out. The general feature of it is that the Standard Oil Company has set aside 6,000.000 barrels of oil at 62 cents a barrel, the profits on this to be divided among those producers who shut io their wells and comply with all the terms of tbe contracts. In addition to tbis the Standard and the producers have made a pool of 2.000,000 barrels, the profits accruing from which is to create a wage fund for laboring men thrown out of em ployment. The faces ore very Prices Qualities. Styles. Re- Ed. Rkfcbmcah: It waa the custom among tho old Sol diers some twenty-odd years ago, to return the fire as soon as received from the ene my, no matter from what source the fire came. The continued insults and falsehoods heaped upon the old Soldiers, and espec ially upon the O. A. R., since last winter, ia disgusting as well as amusing. And yet, as a rule, the boys bare long endured the abuse in that almost silent BUbmlttslon which character! led them amid the hard Bblps of actual warfare a few years ago. But does it ever occur to the minds oi those individuals- "who delight to dump their vile stomachs upsldodown ln the pathway of tlve old Soldiers," that these old "Bummers" aa they call them, have lust aa good if not a better right tocriticlse the acts of even the President or the unit ed States, or any other official, as any man or set of men in the United States. And now, because the old Boldlers "or by far the majority of them" see fit to criticise the insult offered them at tho bands of Grover Cleveland they are callod "Bummers," Coffee-ooolers," "Pension Sharks" and "Deadbeats." and while, too, the declarations of the President ln his vtn message of the Dependent Pension A Sailor's rr dad And cannot stand be Captain Wnltcr Thompson; "ifl'Si ot the noar. juai-y uuell, brousrht to SavannaiiT" urn were unrou?e-oi a remarkablejcscape fore an honest, truthful "Ma death. The bill. The President in that mtssnge'WIf at that said bill would only holp the unde serving and not the honest Soldier who is deserving of help at tbe hands of the Gov renment, Ac. Now, Mr. Editor and Comrades, lot us consider tbis matter honestly and with sincerity, and see if possible the real facts, and who Mr. Cleveland and the whiffling press of the country call "dead beats," Ac. According to Mr. Cleveland there are two classes of ex-soldiers, f. e.. The undeserv ing and the deserving; to this we say, true. Of course the National Democrat thinks the latter, or honest class, is very small, and he (Cleveland) says in the mes sage as above stated, that said bill would only help the undeserving, Ac. Let us purge this matter a little and see who compose thla "undeserving class," whom Mr. Cleveland and his henchmen despise with so much holy horror. Every old Soldier knows, and every sound thinking individual ought to know, that under the present laws by which pensions are grant ed a surgical or Hospital record ia inval uable ; and in fact without auch a record you might count the pensioners upon your fingers; those records have been kept with Jealous care in the Surgeon Gen eral's office in Washington. Now, there are two classea who havo made medical or hospital records, viz: First. That class which enlisted with pure, patriotic motives and impulses. They committed their families to the care of a kind and merciful God, and hoxpital ity of loyal, generous humanity, and rush ed to the camp and scene of action ; they proved themselves worthy of tbe name of Soldier along the march and upon the field of action; they pasa into action one, two, or perhaps a dozen times ; at last the? are carried from the field by their comrades bleeding; they have fought a good fight and their namea are uow transferred to the hospital records. While others of tbis same patriotic clast sooner or later fall victims to some dreaded diseases which proved as fatal to the Northern man aa did the enemy's guns; they grasp their more fortunate comrades b the hand, breathe a "God biess you" upon them and are hur ried away from their mess-mates to the hospital, and they, too, make a record in spite of themselves; and wo here say Unit no men or set of men having in their heart oi.e ounce of patriotism or one drop of the milk of human kindness, would rank those noble men among tbe bummers or undeserving at the hands of our redeemed country. Second. Another class, "and thank God it is comparatively small," are those who had not the moral rogard for themselves even after enlisting to do anything save bumming from first to last around tho ofllcers' and surgeons' tents; tlu-y could eat more salt-horse and hard-bread in three days than a Government mule could carry, and at the sumo time attend "qui nine call" every morning; thoy wore uuvor able to perform camp duty, luueh less tho moro necessary duty upon the battlo-tleld ; by their regularity in attend ing quinine call tliey become well known to the surgeons; the records they here mudu are us lasting in the memory of ull as tbe man himself. At last the ollicers and surgeon look upon the ease as a home less one, and in order to suvo rations and quinine at the front, for wore hopeful TohoPiran Cans.
