The Stoneboro Fair will take place on the 28th, 29th and 30th iosl, Tbe management expects to give tho people of that section a belter fair this year than they have ever before enjoyed. Drillers parsed though here Mon day en route for Green township, where Kelly, Collins & Co., have the rig up for a new veuture. The well is located at tbe junction of Fox Creek with little Coon. It is one of the wildest of wildcats, and will create a flurry should it prove a good well. Prof. Kraus, the accomplished music teacher, is back to Tionesta, anil will remain if enough scholars can be procured to make it pay. He teaches the piano, violin, and iu fact about any instrument you may men lion, and for thoroughness and skill can't be excelled anywhere. No ob jection to taking a limited number of scholars in the country. A quiet wedding took place io town yesterday, that of Mr. Wm. W. Ault one of Nebraska's industrious young men, and Miss Minnie M., the accompliiihed daughter of Mr. 13. T. Lowden. Both are quite popular among the young people of Nebraska, who will wish ibeiu pleasant sailing over the matrimonial sea, in which with the Eefublicabt joins. The borough schools opened on Monday with an unusually large at tendance. Several outside scholars will attend this terra ns result of the efficiency of our corps of teachers, and the favorable advantages afforded by our fine school building. Mrs. J. B. Mechling, of Butler, Pa., who is pleasantly remembered by many of our townspeople as a former resident, stopped a few hours with friends in town yesterday, being on her way home from a visit north of here. She was accompanied by her son James. Our fashionable ladies were talk ing a great deal last season about The Elephant Grey." Sorry we were absent when be called at the lU:ruB- mca n office. The many friends of Dr. and Mrs. S. S. Towler will be paiued to learn of tbe death of a bright little bey ou the 2d inst., proper notice of which ap pears elsewhere io this issue. The sympathy of a lender-hearted people does much to alleviate the paugs of such an affliction, and that we can as sure the stricken parents, they have. The Tionesta township school board will meet at T. F. Ritcbey's office oo Saturday afternoon, next, for tho purpose of electing teachers for the ensuing year, and the letting of contracts for repairing buildings and furnishing coal lot the different schools throughout the township. All inter ested should make a note of the date. As showing the efficiency of an advertisement in the RKruuucAN : A friend of Mr. J. II. Dingman's lost a valuable bracelet, and he posted a showy notice at tbe entrance to the post office, the most conspicuous place in town, but still no response. Tbe next day our paper appeared with a notice of the loss, and Mr. Dingman walked down to the M. E. Church, and after a very few moments' search picked up the missing article. Who will say now that advertising docs not pay. Some weeks ago we mentioned, with considerable regret, tbe depart ure of Mr. Isaac Long, for Kansas. We now have the pleasure of noting his return to this country, he having purchased the mercantile iuterest of J. C. Bowman, at Newmaoville, and become a comparatively near neigh bor. Mr. Long was well pleased with the business outlook of Kausas, but those terrible zephyrs were too much for Mrs. Long, hence the return to the protective hills of the old Keystone, where Air. u. win proceed to "grow up with the oountry." Tbe failure of G. W. Wilkins, an extensive lumber buyer and boat builder, whose yard is located at Pine Creek, five miles above Kittanning, oo the Allegheny River, was annouueed last week. Wilkios is well known to most of our lumbermen, many of whom have done a large business with him. Io a partial list of creditors published io tbe Pittsburgh papers, we observe the following: Dickey, Darrah & Co., $11,000; Judge Cook, $2,500; Collins & Haskell, $5,000; C. Leeper & Co , $3,000. The total amount of bis liabilities is placed at $80,000, with $20,000 of assets, but those io a position to know say that the liabilities' will amount to nearer $100,000. Tbe failure was a complete surprise to every body, as Wilkins was supposed to be solid, and as he was doing a comparatively safe business, bis creditors are at a loss to know what has become o. the property Wben last heard ot Wilkins was in Toronto, Canada. The lumbermen of Clarion, Forest and Jefferson counties will be tbe heaviest losers. He has doue business at that place for tbe past fifteen yeara or more. Ladies Wanted. A lady agent is wanted io every city and village; also Indies to travel and solicit ordera for Madam Wood's Cor sets and Corded Corset Waists, Tarn pico Forms, Hose Supporters, Steel Protectois, Ladies' Friend, etc. Agents are making from twenty tr fifty do! lars a week. Died At his homo in President town ship, Venango county, Pa., Sept. 2(1, 1887, Henry C. McCalmont, aged 79 years. The deceased was one of the landmarks of this section, aud is well remembered by all the older inhabitants. Of his death a daughter writes as follows : The Death Angel has visitod our home and taken from our midst an aged and be loved father, one who bas ever shared our joys and troubles alike. At 0 o'clock Friday morning, the spirit of him we loved and cherished took flight to Join those dear ones gone batnre. Ho hud been a great sufferer for yearsbut uo dangerous symptoms appeared until a short time previous to his'death when wa begun to realize that we iiiutt give up all hope, and be prepared for the dying hour. Calmly and peacefully he passed from earth as uiougn no uaa lailen as'eop. tie leaves a wifo and five children, three sons and two daughters, to mourn his loss. From a Former Tionestian. Through tbe kindness of his cousin, Mrs. Nora Siegle, we are permitted to publish sjme interesting extrscU of a letter from Ed. Savage, a former Tionesta boy, but for many years back a resident of Louisville, Ky. : Dear Nora : We wore very much surprised to hoar from you, hut nevertheless, I was glad to hear from you, and especially from old Tionesta. I could not Imagino tint I had even one inquiring friend left there. Those old hills and the old clmln ferry, if you will call to mind, have always been indelibly impressed upon my mind, and, as x iiavo read and heard Irom time to time of the death of the old residents of Tionesta, of the generation before my time, I can only recall Sam. Haslet, Tcits worth and Hill Killmcr, the Shoemaker. How often my mind has traveled buck to those old scenes of my happier days. I want to go back some day soon ami try my hand at Ashing with rod and spear around some of those Islands that once looked so beautiful in the old Allegheny. And I wonder if there are any trout left in old Tubbs Run, and does Sam. Haslet ever take tho old hounds out over tbe hills after deer? Some times in my dreams 1 Imagine I hear the baying of the faithful old dogs, far away; thoso were the times I used to got the buck fever, and miss a broad side shot at the most beauti ful animal tho world ever knew, but I would always console myself that some other fellow would get a shot sooner or later. Please remember mo to Jim Fonos, and is Davy Hilands still living? or old Tom. "Jeff," Back. Shrlver, Rill Wenk, or any of the old boys of my timeT I send my love to all of them. I will send you sorno keepsake of moth er's In a few days. Poor mother I it is sad to think of her lone grave away out on tho Sage brush plains of Idaho. I would rather think of her in Cave Hill, with our little curly-haired daughter. We have five precious ones living yet, and I hope they may all live to mature years. Uive my love to Hattio and her littlo ones. Tell her Ed. French is living here, mar ried, and bos two littlo daughters. Writo me soon again and tell me about tho hunting and fishing if there is any tiling left to hunt or fish for. I have built a very nice little house on Preston and Mechanic Streets, if you remember where that Is, and we are living iu it; have rented the old cottage on tho hill. Truly Yours, E. II. Savaok. Ed. is well and favorably remem bered by those of whom he speaks, (most of whom are still here) and a great many more, who would be de lighted to receive a visit from him. The sport of hunting aud fishing is by no means what it was iu those days, but there are still enough fih and game to afford amusement for tbe lover of the rod and gun. We imag ine that Ed. is the fellow who was with Sam. Haslet when, one clear, frosty moruing, years ago, he bad gone out on the hill, to "set the dogs out," and when they struck the track aud Ke7an tp "give tongue," Sam asked his friend if he heard "that lovely music 1 oh, that heavenly music '" the fellow listened intently for a niomuoi and then remarked, with a good deal of disgust, that he couldn't hear anything oo account of them d hounds barking !'
