A press of other matter has some what curtailed our usual amount of local reading this week, but we'll en deavor to crowd in more next week. Mr. Will II. May of Louisville, paid his mother aud other relatives here a visit during the week. We were pleased to note be was in good health. Pro.'. C. II. Donnell, Principal of the borough schools, has arrived with bis household goods aud will occupy Jared Huling's pleasaut liule cottage on Vine St. This is tbe last opportunity we will bave of reminding our Republi can friends of the necessity to get reg istered in order to vote this fall. The oyster season, the squirrel season and the New York marriage license law all go into effect to morrow. The latter will prove a sad crack to the York State border preachers. Frank Hunter, who bas been witb the Grove boys, drilling at Cyntbiana, Ky., came borne last week to accept the position at tbo station made va cant by Will Saul's resignation. Mrs. W. J. Bleakley returned to ber home in Frankliu last Saturday after a pleasant visit with Mrs. Col. Thomas. Mies Florence Klinestiver accompanied her for a few day's visit. Hon. Lucigs Rogers, the talented editor of that staunch exponent of llepublicanisro, tbe McKeao Miner, stopped in town a few hours on Wednesday last while on hij way to the Oil City reunion, in which be took a prominent part. Mr. N. G. Cole and Mies Emma Allison, of Nebraska, were married on the 24th, at Jamestown, N. Y, Our congratulations to you and yours, Nel son, May you live long and prosper. Mr. II. O. Davis and family wish to return sincerest thanks to all those friends who lent such kind assistance In their late sore affliction. They shall always be held in kindest re membrance. S. J. Wolcott expects soon to re some work on the well on the Proper farm one mile south of Tionesta, near the Peters run well. The rig was put up several months ago, but drilling was never commenced. The Executive Committee of the Forest County Sunday School Associa tion will meet at T. F. Ritchey's office on Saturday evening, for the purpose of arranging for a County Convention to be held soon. By action of last convention the meeting this year will be here at lionesta. A cooli-h wave has been hover ing about these parts for the past week, and iu some sections slight frosts are reported. The nights and mcru ings are quite fresh, aud those who have paid sixty cents a month for heating stoves all through the but spell are just now getting their mon ey's worth. The Gas Co. is making some re pairs on its main and preparing for the winter frosts. As a consequence the consumer are obliged to "shut off" for a few hours in the forenoon, but the inconvenience is very slight, except, perhaps, to tbe housewife who is in the midst of a red hot fruit can ning campaign. The last quarterly meeting of this conference year, Tionesta circuit, will be beld in the F. M. Church, this place, commencing next Friday eve ning, and continuing over the Sabbath. Rev. J. T. Michael will preach on Friday evening, and those who wish to bear him should avail thomselves of this opportunity; it will be his last sermon here, he expestiog to be trans ferred to another conference. The Republican extends hearty congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Perry, in their new relations as roan and wife, notice of which happy event appears to-day in its proper place. Bride and groom are quite well and favorably known to many of our read ers, (tbe former being the handsome daughter of Commissioner Byerly) all will join in good wishes for their fu ture happiness and prosperity. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Scowden of Meadville, paid their son, J. O, a visit during tbe week, remaining over Sunday. Mr. Sciwdeo served Craw ford county two terms as Commission er, and still takes a lively interest iu politics. He reports the Republican party of his county in splendid condi tion, and predicts tbe election of tbe entire ticket by large majorities this fall. T. N. Ryan, of Kane, one of the original "Bucktails," enjoyed the vet rau'e reunion at Oil City last Thurs day. Many of our citizens have a vivid recollection of one company of this famous regiment coming down the Allegheny in skiffs and remaining one night in Tionesta, during tbe exciting days of '61. Each man wore a buck tail on his cap, hence tbe name which followed them all through the war. The large store of C. W. Hawks, at Balltown, this county, was totally destroyed by fire, together with all its qon tea's, on Thursday eight last, 25ih inst. Tbe fire seems to have originated from escaping gas, and before anything of value could be removed tbe flames bad gained too great headway. Mr. Hawks' loss is given at upward of $5000, upon which it is said there was an insurance of $3000. We have not learned whether or not the store will be rebuilt. Chief of Police Good has in bis possession two open faced silver watch es which were taken from the pick pockets arrested on Grand Army day. The owners can recover tbe same by calling on bim and identifying them. One of them is known to bave been taken from an old soldier, who wore a gray coat, but whose names is un known. Tbe riogs were twisted out of tbe watches when they were nipped. One of the riogs was subsequently found on the floor in one of tbe bar rooms. Oil City Blizzard. The oil busioess in Harmony township is quite brisk these pleasant days. Carnahan Bros., on the Beaver, Hale & Co. tract have commenced a new well not far from their producer Bovee & Co., on the McNutt farm, have their well down already over 500 feet. It is located about 30 rods west of the Caroahao, Wood & Co., on the Joalin farm, have their well down about 700 feet. Stewart A Son, on the Agoew, Proper & Jamieson lands, three quarters of a mile east of the Carnahan well, bave a rig up and will commence drilling this week, So that in a month from now that coun try ought to receive a pretty god B'l- A western exchange says that a new game has been organized ealled "Editor's Delight," the plan upon which St Is played being this wise: "Take a sheet of ordinary writing paper, fold it op carefully, and enclose a bank note sufficiently large to pay all arrears and year in advance. What adds immensely to the game is to send along the name of a new sub scriber or two, accompanied by the cash. Keep your eye on the editor, and if a smile adorns his face, the "trick works like a charm." In its report of I lie reunion the Derrick says that the Conperatowu Post "occupied a prominent position in the procession, which was on the right of the third division, and their fine marching was remarked by many." This is the position occupied by Stow Post of this place, placed there by Aid-de Camp Agnew at the suggestion of Major Greenland, Commander of said division. While the compliment was doubtless intended for the Coop erstown Post, it was none the less de served by our boys. Of the Free Methodist campmeet ing recently held in Titusvilln, the Citizen of that place says : The Free Methodist camp meeting, after a week of out door life, was brought to a close on Wednesday evening, when the largest audience since the meeting began was in attendance. At the con clusion of the exercises those present formed a ring and marched around the grounds bidding each other fare well. This year's meeting parsed very pleusantly aud smoothly and much good work has been done, several be coming communicants of the church. A sudden death occurred in Tio nesta on Thursday morning of last week. Mr. E. C. Tyrrell, who has fir several years been extensively engaged io the stave business near Tylersburg, Clarion county, and whose large mill was recently consumed by tire, came to town that morning with the inten tion of taking the early morning train for Warren. Arriving here about seven o'clock, he alighted from tbe wagon, in which he had ridden with several others, and started for the sta tion. When uear Jus. G. Carson's bouse be was noticed by some of our citizens to stagger aud fall. They quickly ran to bis assistance, but two or three gasps were all the signs of life visible. He was removed to the Lawreoce House and Dr. Morrow was summoned, who applied the dif ferent restoratives, but to no efl'ecl, and the Doctor pronounced life ex tinct. He had been a sufferer from heart disease for some time, and was on his way to receive treatment at the time. His family was notified by tel egram, aud the members arrived iu a short time, and ou Friday bis remains were removed to Youngsville, Warren county, his former home, for burial. He was aged about 55 years, and leaves a wifo and several grown chil dren. The veteran's reunion at Oil City on Thursday last, was a most decided success in each and every particular. The enterprising citizens of the wide awake city left nothing undone, seem ingly, that would in any manuer con tribute to the geueral enjoyment of tbe royal occasion. The weatber was all that could be wished. The town was literally decked in flags and bunt ing, while hundreds of arches spanned tbe streets at various places, bearing appropriate mottoes and inscriptions. Every train that entered the city in the early part of the day was crowded to its utmost capacity, and a moderate estimate put the number of vets and visitors that thronged the streets at over 13,000. Tbe paiade was tbe largest ever beld iu this section of the State, aud so well was the program arranged aud carried out that not a jar occurred. Nearly every man iu line was uniformed, wbile many of the Posts had bands of music with them. The ladies of the city set out a Bpread to the boys in blue, which was com plimented on all sides for its elegance aud abundance.' The order through out the day was the beet we ever saw for tbe size of tbe crowd ; in fact, the policemen had rather a lazy time of it. Tionesta turned out ovtr 250, and among the many Posts io line, we saw none that outstripped Slowe Post (72 strong) io point of haudsouie dress and perfect marching, while our cor net band was among the finest in line, and the Post martial baud numbered more pieces than auy iu the procession, aud did well. Oil City may well be proud of her record on ibis occasion, aud we doubt whether the Northwest era Association will ever have a better reunion. At the business meeting of the Association it was decided to bold the reunion iu Bradford next year. WANTED! 5000 Brace-Poles. Davis, aged 54 years, 1 month and 5 days. It is a trifle over sixteen years since Mr. and Mrs. Davis camo to Tionesta with their family to locate hero permanently. Since that time they have laid seven chil dren to rest in the quiet of Riverside Cem etery; six of these were girls four of them in the hope and romise of young womanhood tho other was their sou Bert who diod last winter. Three of tho childrou died one close after the other, live yeara ago. Her health had not been real good lor about two years j but not serious until within a year ago. She leaves a husband and three children who mourn the loss of a faithful wife and devoted mother. It is seldom that a mother is called on to see so many of her children pass away before her own going over, and It is comforting to those who remain to know that, while wishing to stay for their sakes, yet tlie prospect of going waa not au unpleasant one but full of hope; for it was "going to be with Christ which is far better." The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Small. The funeral sermon was preached in the M. E. Church, and then the form of tho loved and loving mother was laid beside her children, earlior gone to rest than she. Her husband and children bave the sympathy of the many friends who with thorn miss but always remember tho dear one gone.
