THUS. V. COOPER, Chairman Texas voted on the adoption of a prohibitory amendment last week. It defeated by a majority of 75,000. The Mormons threaten to leave "Utah and settle in Canada. If any thing can be done to provoke them to ; -carry their horrid threat into execu tion by all means let it be done. They corralled seven of the boodlers ; out in Chicago last week, and con I victed and sentenced them in a bunch, each getting two years and $1000 fine. There is some chance for Chicago yet. ? . The shrinkage of the Kentucky Democracy is so great that the star- eyed goddess of Free Trade is visible j only under a microscope. There isn't i enough of her left to hold an inquest UmTNational cT?nmw-$uCiyin League will probably convert its next annuel convention into a condolence meeting. It has enough grief on hand to supply a session every day for a month. A government of the people for Grover Cleveland by Eugene Higgins ; is not exactly what the melancholy "ugwumps bargained ibr, but they will have to stand it. That is what Higgins is there for. Press. Reports from explorer Stanley in the Congo region indicate that he is worth a dozen dead men in spite of the rumors of his death. The report that he had been shot was a Midsum mer fiction of neat and flimsy variety. And now, to wit, August, 1887, comes Ro!ell Pettibone Flower, of -New-York, and deposes that President - Cleveland will decline arenominationl Clearly, Mr Flower doesn.t know Mr. Cleveland half as well as he pretends to. There is an old man up in Maine who firmly believes that the world is about to be visited by auother deluge. This prophecy probably come from Neal Dow, who is still pegging away at bis contract for smashing the Re publican party. Tiik election in Kentucky last week shows up very badly for the Democrats, they having carried the State by scarce ly over 5000 majority. This is a vir tual defeat, and while it may be some time before the Republicans can carry the State, it clearly shows the drift of things, and the drift is not hugging the Democratic shore either, by a long shot. It would not be lurprisiog, in the light of last week's contest, to see the State go for Blaine iu 1888. At a fete cbampetre given by the Randall club at Pittsburgh last ciht bamuel J. Randall daoced a quadrille. With Mr. Blaine tilting it gaily on the green iu Scotland and Mr. Ran dall duing the double shuttle in the city of natural gas. Mr. Shermau and Mr. Wallace will have to seek the services of the dancing master. What a gay quadrille "set" the four would make Blaine, Randall, Sherman and Wallace. While most of the old trade dollars have been sent in to the government depositories fur redemption, there may be some who have neglected it because of the long period naiud by the re demption law for the exchange. A measure wrong in principle and a failure in practice hvils are to be outlawed, not legalized Surprised that decent men can be duped by this compromise with the devil. The alcoholic slaughter of hundreds f thousands every year put into in ignificance all the railroad accidents, aud shipwrecks, and choleras, and yel- ow fevers, and earthquakes; and now, hits all our cities are standing aghaft t the moral and social devastation of riitikeuue?. aud saloons are tnu In lying by the hundred?, aud liquor selling associations are becoming more efiant, the Legislature of Isew lork, with no moral coursce to combat the evil by decisive legislation, is delib eratiog whether or not it bad better propose au imbecile compromise which is called high license. Iu other words, it proposes to soy : All you poor ruin- sellers, who can only pay s small li cense, must quit, and all you who can rm v ?500 or S1.000 may co on with a busiuess that is the damualion of so ciety. I am amazed that good men should be deluded with this compro mise with the devil. Oh, some one says, it is impossible to execute a pro hibitory law, and as we can't eject the evil let us pot upou it this one brake The fac that you cannot execute fully a law, is no reason why you should have a law. Which one of your lawB is fully executed? You have a law against Sabbath-breaking, yet multi tudes offend it every Suuday. e have a law against blasphemy, but all our jails are full of burglars high waymen. There is a law against mur der, but there are murderers in all our prisons. Since we have not been able to stop these evils of theft and arson, and blasphemy and murder, why not compromise the matter and have a high license? Give to certain men all the privilege of stealing and swearing and massacre. Get ready your Excise Commissioners. Let us have a $5,000 or 810.000 tax for the business of theft. Let us put an end to those small scoundrels who have geuius euough only to steal house mats or postage stamps or chocolate drops, and confine the business to those who, hav ing paid $5,000 or $10,000 for genteel robbery, can abscond with $50,000 from a bank, or who, by watering the stock of a' railroad company, steal $200,000 at one clip. 1 would put a very high liceuse on theft, say $10,000, fur they would soon make it up. We are fearfully opposed to sneak thieves aud wharf-rats and twopenny scoun drels, but all hail two million dollar j-ascalsl So, also, let us by high ,1: cense "puCuovyn blasphemy. Let os shut up the great masses of the foul- mouthed, and by the high license of $10,000 let a few men do all the swear ing of the community. Let us select, say 40, of the most impulsive men of Brooklyn, men of the highest tempers and the hottest tongues und the most spiteful against God. Let these es pecially delegated men for a high li ceuse of $10,000 be allowed to do all the profanity and have full sweep, while we beat down and sweep out of the community with the besom of de struction all those who swear on a small scale and have not got beyond By George," "My stars," or "Darn it. Extirpation fit all small swear ers! You will never put down bias phemy in this country except by high license. So, also, let murder be li censed. The present law does uot do ; many persons having committed mur der all over the land going scot free. ibe only way you will ever put an end to nurder in this country is by high license; put a few men to man age the whole business. This common herd of assassins who do the work with car hoeks and dull knives and paris green must be put dowu, and let a few experts who can do the thing without paiu and by chloroform or flahh of bull dog revolver can geuteel ly put the victim out of his earthly misfortunes let them have all the business. Of course, that license ought to be as high as 20,000, be cause the perquisites of gold watches and money safes aud plethoric pocket books would soon pay the high license and leave a handsome sum for net profit. You see at a glance, all irouy aside, that if rum-selling is right we all ought to have the privilege of en gaging in it, and if it be wrung, $5, 000,000 paid dowu in hard ca.di as a yearly license ought to purchase no immunity. And yet, at this late pe riod, alter high license has been tried in ronuy places, and always been a dead failure, and the production of additional mischief, and where it ex isted for a long time giving respecta bility to hard drinking, so that many men who would not be seen coming out of a low grog shop found it fash ionable to come out of a gilded sa loon although in every place where high license has beeo tried it has been found a failure, still the proposition is to try it in the State of New Yo-ik.
