but the lire had attained too strong a
hold and nothing could be done but
to prevent the fire from spreading.
Even in this their attempts ero met

and are to day homeless nnd penniless.

It roquirss two wheels to propel a
fairv boat. If one is clogged the boat
simply revolves iu the water without
progress. Every cart needs two wheels,

temperance reform depends farilssuc

forts to dissuade people from driuking
liquor. If either wheel is oil the re

WE ENLARGE
The Republican greets its many
readers this week in an enlarged, and
we truet, a ranch improved form.
Without boaBting (for wo don't pro
pose to brag, bluster or blow about it)
we may state as a fact that it is now
tho largest paper, and contains nearly
-double the amount of reading matter
of any paper published in Forest
county. As to the character of the
natter and the general appearance

substantial and truthful. Tho extra
expense incurred in the enlargement
of the paper has been much greater
than we anticipated, aud it would
Joubtless not be out of order here to

We are radicals, and go for the root
as well as the trunk and the branches
of the devil's upas. Any man who
opposes the sale of intoxicants iu the
saloons, and yet bays wines, ales, aud
brandies for his own tablo, is playing
into the bauds of the enemy. Prohi
bition and total abstiuance stand or
fall together.
A zealous political prohibitionist
said to mo lately: "What is the use of I
your total-abstinence sermons, aud
temperance Sunday-school books, and
tracts, and pledges? Clean out the sa
loons aud tho evil is done with."
Good friend, without moral efforts you
will not be able to "clean out the sa
loons;" and if you did people will get
their intoxicants elsewhere, unls you
can give them a total-abstinence con
science to let the accursed stud' alone.
The evil is uot "done with" while the
drinking usages with open mouth cry
out for the bottle!
Push ou the temperance meeting.
Push on the temperance literature 111
every shape. Push on the pledges 1 f
entire abstinence. Push ou the fight
for prohibition at the same time. Let
the steam on both wheels ! We waul
law, and love also; persuasion uot to
driuk liquor. Shutting saloons is uot
all; we must smash the jugs also.
We want hundreds more fiery
tougued advocates of total abstinence
aud suloon suppression. Peace with
