Governor Beaver's veto pen says "uixey." Cause, "uo mon." Mr. C. W. Barrett has our best wishes in his new venture. One day last week John Kiester, who was engaged in bark-peeling near Gilfoyle, Jeoks township, had one of his legs badly cut, by the glancing of an ax in the bands of a fellow work man. Dr. Towler attended and found the muscles of the thigh almost entire ly severed. A few days ago, at the ceremonies, of the unveiling of the monument to General Sedgwick, on the Spottsylva nia battlefield, a pipe was found lying on the ground, on which was carved the following: "G. W. Sweet, Compa ny B, 83 Regiment P. V., Yorktown, May 1st, 1862." Meadville Gazette. If all our farmers would send in a report like this, Forest county would not need a St. Patrick to rid it of its sur plus reptiles. All the survivors of the old Buck tail regiment are requested to send their names and addresses to me as soon as possible, in order to enable me to compile a roster for the purpose of holding a reunion at Wellsboro, in the early part of this summer. Mrs. Daniel Downey of Balltown, and Mrs. Denuis Downey of Fagun duB, with four children, met with what might have been a very serious acci dent at Hickory yesterday. Tbey were on their way to Fagundus, and when some distance on the appreach to the river bridge, learned they were on the wrong road, and in attempting to back their team off the bridge, the wagou went over, burying its occu pants underneath. Mrs. Daniel Dow ney had one of her arms dislocated at the elbow, but strange to say ncne of the others were injured in the least, although the place was very rocky, and the wagon fell a distance of sev eral feet. Chairman Cooper of the Repub lican State Committee issues his call for the State convention at Ilarrisburg, on Wednesday, August 17, the earliest date upon which it could be held un der the rules. The call is issued in pursuance of the wishes of the mem bers of the committee with whom the Chairman had corresponded, the lime and place being the almost unanimous choice of the Committee. It will be observed that Mr. W. S. Davis of Gilfoyle, whose name was announced for Sheriff, publishes his withdrawal this week. Mr. Davis has a good and lucrative position with Messrs. Curl, Campbell & Co., and finds that a personal cauvass would be detrimental to his business, he therefore leaves the field, thanking his friends kindly for their promises of support. Davey Ililands "Modocked" a ten-pound pike in the creek nt Tlum island yesterday. After blazing away with a gun fur some time without sat isfactory results, he concluded "if he could't shoot him he could catch him," and in he plunged, squarely astride the pike, and after a rough-and-tumble, catch-as-catch-can wrestle of ten minutes Davey came off winner and bagged his game. But it wns a very un-sportsraan-like way of taking a fish. The following officers of Forest Lodge, A. O. U. W., for the ensuing term, were installed last Friday eve ning: P. M. W., L. Fulton. M. Wood & Co. finished a well on the Joslyn Farm last week which shows up pretty well. At a depth of 920 feet a 17-foot sand was struck, and from Saturday night until Monday morning the hole filled about 1G0 feet with oil. Ou Monday the well was shot, but up to this writ ing, Tuesday evening, tho work of tubing it had not been finished and it is not possible to give the production ; however, it is variously estimated at from 10 to 25 barrels. Pumping will likely begin to day. We are reliably informed that the territory between the Fogle farm and Cash up will re ceive a thorough test during the pres ent summer. Two more wells will be put down in the immediate vicinity before the first of August, one on the Joelyn farm and one on James Brom ley's place. Passengers arriving by the Satur day evening river train on the B. N. Y. & P. R. R. were not a little aston ished when tbey saw on the platform a gatbeiing of 300 or 400 men, all casting anxious looks into the car windows. Then their surprise was in creased when, upou debarking from the train, they saw 30 or 40 young men scramble up the car steps and al most prevent the passengers from get ting out. This large assemblage was "looking for a man." It had been ru mored that Len Richards, who bru tally assaulted Maggie Carney on Fri day night, had been arrested in Tio nesta and would be brought back to Oil City by an officer on that train. Considerable excitement was mani fested as the train drew toward the depot and when the cars stopped and no prisoner appeared some thought the officer was holding him in the car till the crowd dispersed. Many ran through the coaches and even ransack ed the baggage car in the hope of find ing the man. Then the report was circulated that Richards had jumped out of the car window, and still an other to the effect that he had been taken off by the officer at the junction. The truth is Richards had not been arrested in Tionesta, neither had he been on that train. A good many young men threatened to do bim bod ily barm should be be brought in. Derrick. Richards, it seems, struck the young lady above mentioned, on the face three times, breaking her nose, and otherwise lacerating her face. "Children's Day" in Tionesta. We believe this annual service, now so generally celebrated in all the churches, originated iu 1S79, for the purpose of creating, or rather enlarg ing, a very meagre fund that was year ly set aside for educating worthy young men who themselves were finan cially unable. This fund, which in 1874 was but $300 in the M. E. Church, was over $30,000 in 1886. The Sun day Schools of Tionesta have been backward in appropriately remember ing this National Children's Jubilee, apparently not having received the inspiration until this year. As usual, however, the services in the M. E. Church on Sabbath eveuing were very attractive, and a credit to tho ninny beautiful entertainments given by our Tionesta folks ou kiudred subjects. The decorations were prand. In the centre, towering over the i.ltsr, was an immense arch twelve feet high, with a smaller one ou each side reach ing to the sides of the church. The centre arch, bound with evergreens, had upon it the motto: "The desert shall blossom as the r.'se," tho letters being made of evergreens and flowers, whilo toweiiog at its sides and above it were pots of real flowers, ferns and brakes. Hanging from the ccntro was a mammoth wreath in which was a canary bird. Suspended from the centres of the smaller arches were smaller wreaths containing silver stars. Upon the left side of the church was a handsome evergreen anchor encir cled with a chain of flowers and over it "Hopiug and Trusting" in ever greeus and flowers. Ou the right side a crown of evorgreeus prettily deco rated with flowers, and over it in ever greens and flowers, "By and by the reward.!' This, with many additional cages of birds, pots of rare plants and flowers, pretty children dressed in white and tastily maiked with fra grant flowers, presented a sight seldom looked upon.. Add to this the appro priate, attractive aud elevating exer cise, "The Gospel of the Flowers," ns given under the direction of Superin tendent J. II. Diogman, and it seems to us perfection has been reached. As to the rendering of tho programme, it seems that to individualize is u super fluous work. A duett by the Misses Fanny Small and Blanche Pease; b song by the infant class, during a part of which Miss Kate Knox was their leader; a solo by Miss Emma Sloan, and recitations by tho Misses Alum Iloyt, Fanny Small, Minnie Landers, Dolly Carson, Grace Smith, aud Jean nie Iloyt; consecutive reading by the younger scholars standing upon a pyr amid, closing with a song and child like prayer, we think deserve especial mention. The choruses by tho whole school, with Mr. Dingman as leader, were among the grand features of this most joyous eutertainment. Aud we must not close this report Lcforo ascribing to the untiring, skillful efforts and ex quisite taste of Superintendent Ding man a very large share of tho com plete success of the memorable occa sion. ' We hope this is but tho beginning of a regular remembrance of this day of days for the children by all our Sabbath Schools. The Fourth in Tionesta. The wording of the net is as follows : Be it enacted, Ac, That all taxe3 for whatsoever purposo laid upon household furniture, watches and pleasure carriages by and under tho revenue laws of this commonwealth, be and the same are hereby abolished, ntnl the laws under which said taxes are levied and collectod so far as they relate to the property herein mentioned are hereby repealed.
