has been discontinued, Mr. Tobey

up the finest soda fountain this neck
of woods has yet possessed. It hasn't

As water is worse than useless in
case of an oil fire, it is a good thing to
know and remember that flour is the

Monday morning at daylight the
ground was white with snow. Against
night there was at least six inches of
solid snow all over the couotry. It
rained at intervals duridg the day,
and it is probable that a foot of soow
fell during the day.
Monday night our citizens were
arroused, just about midnight, by a
tremendious thumping on their front
doors. It was Hoyt come to warn
that the gas was going down and
they'd better turn nfT their jets. Tues
day morning it was all right again.
From St. Clairsville, Ohio to
Wheeling, W. Va., on Friday after
noon last, a cyclone made a most dis
astrous record. Trees, fences, houses,
chimneys, lumber, in fact everything
portable was tossed around in a most
destructive way. No persons were in
jured. Mr. Fulton ha3 the excavation

On Thursday last at about one
o'clocK the warehouse of the hub fac
tory of Martin t Homer at Tidioute
was destroyed by fire. At the time
the buildiug contained about 45,000
seasoned hubs. The loss is 610,000

a severe one to them. The orijin of

Alvin Culver of Tylershurg,
whom many of our readers will re
member to have seen, committed sui
cide by haagjog himself. Ha disap
peared on Tuesday last, and was
fjund on Thursday, banging by the

church. Physically he had always
been unfortunate, as well as mentally.
Lately he had been blind. He was
43 years of age.
Sizerville, Cameron county, has a
medicinal spring which, it is said,
cures rheumatism. Ia relation to
this we clip the following from an ex
change: From the Wellsboro Advo
cate we learn that J. E. Wescott, of
Westfield, Tioga county, will soon
erect at Sizerville, Cameron county, a
large hotel for the accommodation of
guests who seek that place for water
from the great mineral spring there.
Peterson's Magazine for May is on
band with its usual promptitude. De
cidedly, so far, "Peterson" for 1887
has surprised itself. Kit goes on as it
has begun, this will be its jubilee year,
in point cf merit. This month's double-size
colored fashion-plate will be
greeted by extra- eagerness by the la
dies, as it contains several Parisian
costumes wholly novel io design, and
as graceful as they are original. The
steel engraving is a bsauty, and the
crochet and embroidery patterns are
very fresh and taking- The stories,
too, are exceptionally good. Terms,

are piles and piles of staves in the
yard ready to be hauled after awhile.
At Marienville on Friday afternoon
there ws a severe hail slsrm. The
schools ia Jenks open on Monday, the
18tb, inst. The teachers are: Nellie
Davis. Gilfoyle; S. F. Rohrer, Rose;
Ella Leech, Marienville; A. J. Sal
lade, Gaul ; J. W. Black, Byrora.
Isaac Long has sold out his store
and property at Black's Corners to
William Patterson, who will take pos
session ia the early part of June. Mr.
Patterson is assured of a good busi
ness there.
Oliver Clark, the big, good natured
and reliable blacksmith at the Corners
is a candidate fr commissoner at the
Clarion county Republican primaries.
We heartily wish our old friend sue
cess.
The Interstate law will prevent the
P. & W. R. R. from issuing the spec
ial rate ticket to raftmen, and no
doubt many of the boys will come
home from down the river by way of
Brookvil'.e.
The P. & W. R. R. has "lifted" the
station at owinckel. lhis will be a
great inconvenience to all the parties
getting freight there, and will noduobt
cause many parties shipping there to
go to Brookville instead. We under
stand that ao effort is being made to
have the station brought back again.
We met many friends on the way
and had a very pleasant tramp.

Mr. E. S. Collins has returned
from a prolonged stay in the west. He
is looking quite well. We think the
west agrees with him.
Frank Walker has been on the sick
list for a few day.?.'
W. L. Thompson has recovered
from the measles. He stopped a raft
in the creek the other day to wait for
more water or get a lighter crew, vre
mar not be certain which.
Mrs. George Klinestiver is visitiog
friends at Hickory.
The debate held at the school house
last Saturday evening ia said to have
been very interesting. There was a
large attendance, and a spirited de
bate and the paper, edited by J. P.
McCain and Miss Emma Allison, and
called the Nebraska Astonisher, was
very interesting. The writer of this
having a sore toe, was unable to be
present.

He ha3 a full line of dry goods and
groceries, and a dashing clerk. Give
him a call, even if you do not care for
the store.

It took fire from a defective flue io
the second story. Not much damage
was done to the hotel. Some of the
boarders lost some clothes.

Wet Hickory Notes.
The dcrJkatron of the church, built
by the Evangelical Association, took
place last 'Strnday. Pkv Saylor, of
Franklin, Rev. Snford of Cleveland,
Rev. Boyer, of Warren, an P.ev. ie
Vaux were present. The services
commenced Saturday evening, being
conducted by Kev. Boyer, who preach
ed a beautiful aad eloquent sermo-n.
Rer. Sanfjrd, th dedicator, preached
two excellent sermons on Sunday and
was successful1 ia ra'rtirrg 5000 towards
paying off tb church debt, there being
$175 still unpaid. The dedicatory
services in the evening were very im
pressive. Rev. Savior, Kev. DeVaux
and Mr. Jonathan Alfrasgh were ap-
pointed as trustees. iev. cajior me
popular Presiding Elder, won nary
friends, and we are happy to say that
he has promised if possible, to presch
here next Friday evening on his way
to hold Quarterly Meeting at the AI
baugh church. Rev. DeVaux, the
minister in charge, deserves great
praise for his unfailing energy in erect
ing the church, although the citizens
wtre ever ready to respond to his call
for assistance. The church was very
artistically decorated by some of the
ladies. The Rev. gentlemen express
ed themselves as being very much
pleased with the cordial reception
they received by the people of West
Hickory. They have organized a Sab
bath School which meets every Sun
day afternoon at 3 o'clock, Mr. Win.
Kernble as superintendant.
Mr. A. J. Siggins is putting down
another oil well on his farm.
The school is open for the Summer
terra.
We are sorry to say that Edward
Beaver, one of West Ilickorys most
popular boys is soon to leave us. He
takes with him the best wishes cf his
many friends.
C. W. Smith of Warren spent Sun
day here with friends.
Mrs. M. J. Delano left last week
for Titusville, where she will make her
future home. She will be missed by
her many friends heie.
Perry Shaw came down from TidT
oute, and spent SunJay with his pa
rents.
It is rumored that there wiil be ex
tensive additions made to the tannery
durins the comiojr Summer. If this
be true it will greatly increase busi
ness. Quite a colony from East Hickory
will emigrate west this spriog. Some
of the best citizens of the place make
up the number. We wish them suc
cess, and if energy and push asure
