Of the recent Western elections the New
York Tribune says: The Western elec
tions tell the story. The only genuine
Labor party, the party which has
protected for 23 years all American
labor, organized or unorganized, white or
black, in shop or on farm, achieves in
Western cities the victory it would have
pained in New York had Republicans ad
hered manfully to their convictions. In
Philadelphia they refused to regard a
Trades Union party as a better labor party
than the party of protection, and victory
by a phenomenal majority was the result.

In the last two or three years there
has grown to perfection in this locality
a most coutcniptiblc feature iu jour
nal is.u, which concedes uo honest cou
viclious tj mu opponent but acuses
every public otiicial of opposing poli
tics with corrupt motives in all pub
lic acts. The treatment of the legis
lature is a fresh sample of the matter
referred to. The Billingsley bill,
uow before that body, has taken much
attentiou and has provoked what
ought to be a lively newspaper discus
sion, but which really is nothing but
a first class billingsgate war of epithets
and accusations. Of the page ou page
of editorials written on the subject by
both sides there is rarely a sentence
of good decent, commou secse argu
ment. The whole tenor of the wordy
war is to blacken the personal char
acter of the opposite side, and attrib
ute no motives other thau the basest
for every act or intention respecting
this bill. It i3 proper now to suggest
that such a course is not approved by
the sober, thinking men of sense who
buy uewspapers fjr news and read ed
itorials for argument. The Billings
ley bill from our stand point looks
like a good bill, and if we understand
it, would advise its passage, but out
opinion of us merits does not make it
our duty to brand every opponent of
it a standard hireling, a bribe lakeer
and a perjurer. Whi! it seems per
fectly plain to us that tha bill ought
to pass, it may seem perfectly plain
to another person, just as honest and
intelligent as we, that the bill ought
not to pass. Because Mr. Billingslhy
proposed that bill he is not thereby
covicted of an attempt to blackmail
the Standard Oil Company, nor is
John J. Carter or any one else con
victed nf being bribed by the Stan
dard Oil Company by the fact that
he is opposed to the Biilingsley bill.
The newspapers now engaged iu ti
rades of personal abuse on respectable
oil producers, legislators, and mem
bers of the .Standard Oil Company,
are a disgrace to journalism, and
their influence on morals and politics
is bad. It ia well known that the
chastity of women is oftenest called in
question by the libertine. It is also
true that the most corrupt journalists
are they who most frefuently chars'?
corruption against public men. It is
a shame that newspapers have got so
low, and a sad commentary cu the
moral and intellectual status of the
people that such newspapers can live.

The Connecticut Senate on Wed
nesday set itself rilit on the tariff
question. A few days ago a vote was
taken on a resolution f.ivoring the
abolition of duties on raw material,
but it was presented in such a way
that bnrilly anyone but the mover
knew what Le w as voting on. It re
ceived fivorable aclkin and the fact
was at once seized upon by the Free
trade pres as an evidence nf the
growth of Frep-tradim in New Eu
gland. But Wednesday the matter
came squarely before the Senate
again, end, with everyone aware ot its
real import, it received just two votes
in its favor, while uineteen votes were
cast against it. So the Mugwump
papers are caught short in their effort
