The Republican Meeting.
Every Beat jn the Court Room was
filed last Wednesday evening at an
early hour, the large audience having
gathered to hear the campaign opened
by Col. D. II. Hastings, of Bellefonte,
the law partner of General James A.
Beaver. The meeting was called to
order by Chairman Shawkey, and
Samuel D. Irwin Esq., was elected
President, with a number of Vice
Presidents from each township. The
Tionesta Brass Band were present,
and at the completion of the organi
zation played a lively air. Mr. Irwin
then expressed his thanks for the hon
or conferred on him, and in a happy
manner introduced the speaker of the
evening, Col. Hastings. The Colonel
is a fine looking man and has an
equally fine voice as an orator. His
speech lasted about an hour and a
half, during which the audience were
very attentive and listened' eagerly to
very word that was said. The rec
rds of the Republican and Democrat
io parties were truthfully set forth and
contrasted, much to the disparage
went of the latter. His glowing trib
ute to the gallant General Beaver was
one of the happy points of his speech
At the finish of Col. Hastinga' speech,
the President introduced Miles W.
Tate Esq., who never fails to please
an audience. He kept the house in a
good humor during his entire speech,
which lasted nearly aa hour. Mr.
Tate directed his remarks mainly to
the third party issue, and showed con
clueively that as the Republican party
bai adopted a plank in its platform
to submit a constitutional amendment
to a vote of tbe people, there waa no
further use for a separate prohibition
party. Mr. Tate's address was listen
d to with marked attention, and re
ceived many rounds of applause.
Lieut. -Gov. Stone was loudly call
ed for, but refused to speak. Ilowev
r, the few remarks he made elicited
eager attention, and were full of
wholesome truths.
At the close of tbe speeches three
rousing cheers were given for the tick
t, and the audience dispersed amid
tbe happiest feeling. Ihe meeting
passed off very pleasantly without the
slightest jar or interruption in the
proceedings, and was pronounced on
verr hanl to be a very successful
one. For the firBt gun of the cam
oai?n the sound was a good one.
The band deserves praise for the
good music rendered.
Pay your taxes before Saturday,
October 2. If you have not paid tax.
ci within two years you will lose your
vote. To be safe, pay them now.
Republicans bhould not fail to
fay their State and County taxes be
fore October 2J. Better pay 'era right
way and cot take the chances of for
getting before it is too late.
Warmly Endorsed.
Below we add a few more of the
very strong endorsements which our
candidate for Congress, Mr. Jas. T.
MafTett has received since his nomina
tion :
A Good Selkction. Our Repub
lican friends may well feel proud of
their nominee. For once they have
made a wise choice in nominating a
man who has a spotless reputation
and if this (25th) Congressional Dis
trict is again to be represented by a
Republican, we know of no one more
capable and dcseiving than James T.
Maffett, Esq., of Clarion.
Ia referring to tho nomination, the
Franklin Penny Press very truthfully
remarks :
"The Republican Conference of the
25th Congressional District, in con
vsntion at Foxburg, yesterday, nomi
nated, on the 142d ballot J. T. Maf
fett, Esq., a very reputable and popu
lar Clarion attorney. We know Mr.
MafTett, aud congratulate him. It is
a great improvement on Republican
nominations in that district for some
years." Edenburg National.
J. T. Maffett, Esq., of Clarion, re
ceived tbe nomination for Congress in
this district, on the 142d ballot, at the
Republican Congressional Conference
held at Foxburg, last week. Mr.
MafTett is a leading member of the
Clarion county bar, is a native of this
county, and will undoubtedly receive
generous support throughout the dis
trict. East Brady Review.
While the Democratic campaign
book was being edited a prominent
Democrat proposed to pay $1,000 for
the privilege ot writing one page iu
the book. He was asked what be de
sired to write. He said: "I only want
to write one liue to be priuted on one
page, it snail be good Democratic
material." The' proposition was ac
cepted, and the next day the gentle-
man presented a certihea- check on
Riggs & Co.'s bank for $1,000 and a
slip of paper upon which was written
in a bold hand, "To the victors belong
the spoils." The member of the com
mittee looked at the check, then at
the sentence, scratched his head, re
turned both to the giver, saying: "I
agree with you, but cannot accept
your proposal." The prominent Dem
ocrat tere up bom check: and paper
upon which the famous matter 'was
written, and walked out of the com
mit tee-room. Courier-Journal.
Quite a lively kick is now being
made in the Prohibition camp against
candidate Wolfe and his dictation.
and twenty-five members of the State
Central Committee have issued a call
reconvening tbe State Convention, at
Harrisburg on the 30th inst., for the
purpose of hauling down the gentle'
