GREAT EARTHQUAKES.
The City of Charleston, S. C,
Nearly Destroyed.
' The greatest earthquake ever known
in this country occurred shortly be
fore ten o'clock on Tuesday night of
last week. It was felt throughout the
United States east of the Mississippi
river, the shocks being experienced
from the Gulf notbward to the Upper
Lakes and from points near the Mis
sissippi eastward to the Atlantic coast.
At Charleston, South Carolina, Mont
gomery, Alabama, Cleveland, Ohio,
Raleigh, North Carolina, and Indian
opolis, Yndlaaa, the shocks seem to
have been specially severe. At Mont
gomery, Selma, Lynchburg, Rich
mond, Washington, Cleveland, Mem
phis and other places, people rushed,
panic stricken, into the streets.
' Dispatches ftom Charleston, under
date of Sept. 1st, give some idea of
the awful severity of the shocks ex
perienced in that city :
An earthquake, such as was never
before known in the history of this
city, swept over Charleston last night
shortly after 10 o'clock, causing more
loss and injury to property and far
more loss of life than the cyclone of
a year before. The city is wrecked ;
the streets are encumbered with mass
es of fallen bricks and tangled tele
gaph and telephone wires, and np to
an early hour it was almost impossible
to pass from one part of the city to
another. The first shock was by far
the most severe. Most of the people
with their families passed the night in
the streets, which, even this morning,
are crowded with people, afraid to re
enter their homes. More than sixty
persons were killed and wounded,
chiefly colored. Among the whites
killed and fatally injured are M. J.
Lynch, Dr. B. Alexander Hammond
and Aiosley Robson. There is no
way of leaving the city at present.
The principal businees portion of
the city was destroyed and hundreds
of persons rendered homeless. Men
were frantic aud women were beseech
ing mercy from the Almighty, and the
children were in tear.. The main sta
tion bouse, City Hall, Hibernian Hall,
and many other well-known public
buildings, including St. Michael's
church, were irreparably damaged.
Broad street presented a spectacle of
the utmost horror. Even women
armed with hatchets fought valiantly
to rescue the imprisoned unfortunates.
Meeting street, from Broad to Hazel,
is a wreck, and is lined with the un
fortunates. To add to the horror of
the scenes many fires broke out and
were ineffectually fought by the fire
department. The night was made
hideous with the groans of the dying,
the screams of the wounded and the
prayers of the uninjured. The loss to
property is estimated at from $5,000,
000 to 88,000,000 in the city of Charles
ton. Shocks of greater or less severity
have been felt up to Sunday night,
but nothing so Bevero as the first. The
people are still in mortal fear and
have not the courage to re enter their
homos, not knowing what instaot the
next shock will come.
J. E. WENK,
It is about time for the State ad
ministration to make a statement on
the Democratic State ticket. The
party has its ear to the ground.
Vermont held her State election
yesterday with the usual result. A
Republican governor, a solid Republi
can Congressional delegation and a
large majority in the legislature by
increased majorities. Senator Ed
munds is sure of re election.
Col. R. Bruce Ricketts, the nom
inee for Lieutenant Oovernor, is in
the position of the fellow in camp,
who was subject to a fine if he kicked
about the cookiDg. He had been fed
on salt pork for a week right straight
along, until one day he broke forth
with, "blank the blankety blank
pork!" then, seeing that he was watch
ed, he smiled a sickly smile and said
feebly "but I like it."
Yesterday Vermont went through
the perfunctory performance of rolling
up an old-fashioned republican ma
jority. Half of the Vermont democ
racy, in the the person of Ed. Phelps,
issnobbing around with dukes aud
duchesses in London, and the other
half, in the person of BraJley B.
Smalley, is snooping around after cus
toms at Burlington in view of which
fact it was all the more possible for
political history to repeat itself. Der
rick. Let the world rejoice. The Presi
dent last week went out hunting deer
on the Tupper Lake in the wilderness
and killed a four pronged buckl So
they say. The earthquake Bwallaws
up Charleston and the people suffer.
But the hounds are let loose and "Mr.
Cleveland was much pleased with his
good luck and laughingly received the
congrat- Iation of his friends." Won
derful 1 So who cares about a little
earthquake and its terrible results?
The President is happy. When Grant
used to seek the cool bieezes of Long
Branch tho Democratic papers made
a terrible ado about the "government
on wheels." But now they are mum
over the government's slaughter of a
poor deer in a lake run to the death
by a pack of hounds I Who says that
Grover isn't a great statesman and a
model President of 50,000,000 of peo
ple ? Warren Mail.
