We are authorized to announce PETER
KERRY, of Ralltown, as a candidate for
Assembly, subject to Republican usages.
COUNTY SURVEYOR.
We are authorized to announce Henry
C Whittekin as a candidate for County
Surveyor, subjoct to Republican usages.
Meeting of Republican County
Committee.
There will be a meeting of the Re
publican County Committee on Mon
day evening, May 17, 1886, at 8
o'clock, at the office of the Chairman.
Let there be a good attendance of the
Committee on said occasion.
S. D. Irwin, Chairman.
The only mercy to be shown bomb
throwing dynamiters should be a
short rope and a lamp post.
It 13 "quiet in Chicago cow. When
the lamp posts are ornamented with
a couple of Socialists it will even be
quieter.
Jiff Davis' chin will be in repose
after this week. In time bid Southern
friends will wish be bad never been
dragged from obscurity to wag it.
The Mugwumps are Btill threaten,
ing to boycott the Administration.
It is about the only thing they can
do, seeing that the Administration has
boycotted them.
It is well enough, perhaps, consid
ering all things, that Jeff Davis
should swing around the circle. But,
in the eternal fitness of things, Mr.
Davis ought to have swung in anoth
er way.
It is quite noticeble that the Payne
Senatorial investigation in Ohio cost
in the neighborhood of $40,000,
which is a good deal more than it
came to. Just about the same may
be said of the Hamilton county elec
tion fraud investigation, which also
cost a good deal more than it came to.
Why is there such a striking si milarity
between the two? Because both are
Democratic' frauds, and neither the
fraudulent United State Senator nor
the fraudulent State Senators have
any hesitation about holding seats ob
tained by perjury.
We do not believe in the Democra
cy of the Philadelphia Record, because
we are protectionist in faith. Yet we
are catholic enough in our charity to
wish even the Record as happy as it
deserves to be. Therefore we are sor
ry to see that Sam Randall will con
tinue to worry the Record by remain
ing in the party despite all that creat
journal can say to the contrary. If
bam would be as honest as the Record
is, and step out of the party which is
free trade and into the party which is
protectionist, and take with him all
who like are not Democratic, the Rec
prd'e party woold be more symmetric
al, but not near so large. It would
suit us exactly. The Democratic par
ty would then be better looking,
though not so large, and we would
like it better in both respects. liar

The great bubub and hurrah that
Las been going on in the South for the
past few days over the unrepentent
rebel Jeff Davis, came to a conclusion
t Savannah, Ga., on Saturday. The
next morning Jeff, started homeward
in a special train, and his trip from
the city to Albany, Ala., was the sig
nal for the collection of crowds at all
etations where the train stopped and
several speeches were made. When
the train stopped at Homerville some
one in the crowd cried : "We're proud
of the man who always did his duty."
Old Jeff, answered: "I alwars tried
to do my duty, and if the people of
the couth thick I did my duty I am
eatibfied, and I don't care what Yan
kees thiok. I have nothiog to ask
from them, not even a pardon, for be
who keeks a pardon must profess a re
pentance. I have not repented. The
only thing I am sorry for is that we
did not succeed. If a Yankee comes
South and behaves himself we are
glad to have him."
J. E. WENK,
Anarchist SriES, of Chicago, de
fiantly proclaims that he is opposed
to all laws which may account for
the fact that be is safely locked up
where the mosquitoes won't worry
him. However, if Spies is opposed to
all laws, that may bo why all laws ate
opposed to Spies.
No anti-mormon legislation this
season is the announcement which
comes up from Washington. The
Senate passed a measure known as the
Edmunds bill, and sent it down to tho
House, hut the Judiciary Committee
of the latter body has decided to pigeon-bole
it. The Mormons are as
sured, therefore, of another year of
freedom, and they are also encouraged
by the President's action in removing
Governor Murray. These two evi
dences that they are to be treated
more leniently by the Government
will not be lost upon the wily Latter
Day Saints. The vigorous enforce
ment of the law against polygamy by
Judge Zane and the expectation that
even more severe measures would be
enacted by Congress were dishearten
ing the Mormons and bringing them
to see that they must surrender their
unlawful practices or emigrate. The
change in the situation will lead cer
tainly to an abandonment of any
such intentions. By strengthening
the belief, also, that the Democracy
sympathize with them it will make
the execution of repressive measures
all the more difficult in the future.
Anarchy in Chicago.
A bloody riot occurred ia Chicago,
that hotbed of socialists and anar
chists, on Tuesday of last week.
Meetings were held and crowds of so
cialists gatherd on the streets and lis
tened to the most incendiary and
treacherous speeches imaginable. A
squad of policeman attempted to dis
perse the rioters but were met with
bombs and pistols, and six of their
number killed outright and morethau
a score more wounded, many of tbetn
mortally. They held their ground
bravely, and after repeated volleys
from their revolvers, succeeded in dis
persing the anarchists, one of whom
was killed and about thirty wounded.
August Spies, editor of the Arbeiter
Zeitung,tho anarchist paper, bis broth
er Chris. Spies and Michael Schwab,
leaders, have been arrested, and other
arrests will follow. Of all the rioters
who were arrested, there was not an
American name, nor a known natur
alized citizen. Those who threw the
bombs were those trying to introduce
the anarchial methods into this coun
try which they have been forced to
abandon in the countries whence they
came. They are not desirable immi
grants to the country. They are pro-
lessional revolutionists, pretending to
be workingmen, which they are not.
There is no place for sucn men in
America, and the question whether
these mischief makers shall force upon
us methods that are not American,
whether we will or not, is now press
ing for solution. We have our meth
ods of dealing with these questions,
and we believe the Socialists will not
be permitted to revolutionize our
methods. We say our people will not
permit these impudent brutes to intro
duce their methods. The exhibition
of the red flag, and the violent de
mand for blood must and will be
squelched.
