The whole nation will regret to
learn that ex-President Arthur's ill
new is of sach a nature that he has
beta ordered by his physicians to lake
a European trip. And everybody
will wish him speedy recovery.
Of the forty-serea members of the
House who voted against the pension
to Mrs. Hancock only two were Re
publicans, V used to think during
Itancockv life that he was suspected
of sot being a very good Democrat.
The survivors of the 103 Regi
xnent, Pa. Vols., will hold a meeting
at Erookville on April 9th looking to
the erection of a memorial tablet to
designate the position, of that regi
ment on the Gettysburg battle field.
They request all persons interested to
attend the meeting or send a donation
for the object named.
The Administration has gone near
ly far enough to convince ever so en
thusiastic a man as Mr. Geveland
that he might just as well try to sham
poo an elephant with a thimbleful of
soapsuds as to try to satisfy the hun
ger of his party by telling them that
a continuance of their fast will be
a good thing for the cone try.
The great debate on the Senate
resolutions censaring the Attorney
General for refusing to submit official
papers in ca&es of removals from office
and declaring that hereafter appoint
ment wonld not be confirmed with
out the papers, closed on Friday with
a ringing speech by Senator Ingalls of
Kansas. The resolutions were then
adopted.
A box has been introduced in Con
gress to prevent the sending of junk
eting committees to the funerals of
deceased members of either House,
and it ought to pass. This thing of
making the burial of a dead congress
man the occasion for an orgy or a pic
nic at public expense, or at anybody's
expense, is scandalous, and the coun
try has seen more than enough of it.
rhila. Frets. .
They are growing very tired of the
long drawn out election fraud investi
gation ia Ohio, and the Janata Com
mittee will probably be ordered to re
port on the 6th of April. As the
same evidence applies to both Senate
and House and the Republicans are
safo to seat their Senators, and as the
Democrats have succeeded in obstruct
ing legislation long enough to prevent
the passage of a registry law in time
for the spring elections, which was all
they were fighting for, they are grow
ing tired of it too, and they will now
peimit the elected Senators to take
their seats and business to proceed.
OLio can carry o2 tha honors aj the
champion State for Democratic ras
cality. They are more ready to use
fire arms in the South to teach the
negroes their proper place, but that ia
only coarse brutality. For auperdae,
high art venality, where perjury, for
gery and ballot stuffing are the means,
Ohio Democracy can double discount
their friends in the South. Down
there they are fighting stock. In
Ohio they are not. In the South they
are only brutal. In Ohio they reduce
scoendreiism to a SLier.ce. an.I on tha
whole, Southern Democrats must doff
meir uau to tr.e Uaio Democracy,
which is the Simon pure article.
