the act deciars that "no person bail
he joined in marriage until licenw
shall have been obtained for that pur-
pose," it ia alrnuu invariably inferred
that a mirnoge woich has been sot-
emnized without the formality of a
license ia void. This is not the meaning
or intent of the act at ail. Any mia
irter, justice or other officer whn sol
emnizes the marrams ceremnoy with
out the person 5m having obtained a
license, ia punishable bv a dne of one
hundred dollars, but the act nowhere
,
aeciares that a marr.age contract en-
tared into without a .icaose ia void.
A license ia necessary for a proper ob-

tract, and those who perform the cere
mony wtthout requiring the conr.ract-
ing parties to produce their license

A Veteran of 1312-
Perhapi the eldest person in this
part of the country is llajor John
Camp, of Shippenville, who is nnw 96
years old, and, notwithstanding his
extreme old ag?, still enjoys good
health, though hia signt and hearing ia
had. Mr. Camp baa lived an event
fjl life and hia history, if wnuen,
would make interesting reading. Ha
served thraogh the entire war of 1312,
and for many rears has entertained
hia friends with thrilling- accounts of
"how wa licaed tha Britishers." He
now draws a pension from the govern
ment for hia services in that war. Dur-
ing tha lata rebellion hia patriotism
prompted him to go the front, bat i main road leading to Tylerahurg, four
greatly to hia dwguat hia orTer of aid I miles from Tlonesta borough. Con
waa rejected on account of hia yean, j tains 57 acres, with 12 acres cleared

Mrs. Coorad Rase, of Franklin, and

villa, both of whom have been dead
