A citizens cacus fur the borough was

The election was quite spirited, the

with the oflice of road commissioner:
At a caucus of the citizens cn Satur
day the names of Wm. Hood and P.
C. Blcchor were presented ; three bal
lots were taken and each resulted in a
tie between the gentlemen. It was
then agreed that both candidates be
placed iu the field and voted for at
the election. This was done, and,
strange to say, another tie resulted.

FLOOD OF 1886.
The break-up of February 13th,
1886, will long be remembered by the
inhabitants of Tionesta and vicinity
as the severest since 1861. The nat
ural flood of 1865 was much more se
vere generally, but not in this place,
and the water at that time was no
higher at this point, nor was it accom
panied by ice; it came on moro grad
ually, thus giving the people lime to
prepare for it.
The ico commeuccd to move iu the
river here on Saturday forenoon about
eleven o'clock, und had been running
fully 20 miuutes betore Buy danger
was apprehended, and the people
along Hie river front bad como to the
conclusion that the worst was over,
when the ice gorged iu the main chan
nel at the head of Dustin island, half
a mile below town, thus forcing the
entire body of floating ice through the
channel between the head of Dustin
and foot of Hunter islands. Then the
water came rushing back, and before
people had time to realize what was
going on the whole flat or lower part
of the town was inundated, so that
boats were easily floated over five-foot
fences. Ice was pilod trom 10 to 15
feet high along Front St. Every cel
lar in that part of the town was flood
ed, and in many instances furniture
floated around in the house in water
twj and three feet deep. As a conse
quence all sustained more or lens loss,
among whom are Jas. G. Carson, S. S.
Canfield, Mrs. Saul, Isaac Shimp,
Wm. Guiton, Ed. Saouer, J. R. Chad
wick, Andrew Carr, J. H. Dingraan,
Mrs. Dr. Hunter aud family, W. Y.
Siggins, John Hart, Moses Ilepler, E.
L. Davis, and others. Most of these
had potatoes, fruit and other eatables
in their cellars that were either badly
damaged or ruined entirely.
AT EAST IJICKOliY
We learn a great deal of damage was
done, the town being nearly all sub
merged. Several roads of the ap
proach to the east end of the bridge
were swept away. The railroad track
over West Hickory flats was covered
with ice several feet high, stopping
travel completely duiing the day. The
ttains were runniug regularly on Mon
day, however.
FOUND AFLOAT.
The river bridgo at this place stood
the test liko a major, although the ice
breakers were badly chawed np.
One ot the piers of the creek bridge
was damaged somewhat, the ice having
crowded it from below. It misht be a
good idea, if this performance is going
to occur often, to put ice breakers on
the lower side of Ihe piers.
Lawrence, across the creek lost
nearly all his fence, aud many of bis
youug fruit trees were ruined.
It was quite common to see a chick
en coop flnBtiog around with the poul
try perched on top and old chanti
cleer crowing lustily.
Many lost chickens, and some lost
many. Charlie Ilinton lost his entire
flunk of 28.
Canfield's pig struggled nobly for
an hour among the floating ice cakes,
when Shell and J. B. Muse came to
the fescue. Jim. was the hero of the
hour and received the plaudits of the
anxious crowd.
This flood furnishes another event
to date from.

place as a taok shop.
Mrs. George Whitten is visiting
friends at Minister this week.
Miss S. J. Keister of East Hickory,
and Miss Belle Lewis of Reidsburg,
Clarion county, are the guests of Miss
Hattie Tobey this week.
Mr. Robert Harkisen has the job of
cutting and delivering cordwood for
the drilling wells on the Cook tract.
Pat. Normile is all smilea on ac
count of tho arrival of a brand new
9 lb. girl baby at his house.
Miss Maine Murphy aud Miss Min
nie Whilten are both on the sick list.
We hear there is to be a wedding
in the near future ; for further infor
mation ask Jerry..
Curly Bangs of Kellettville takes
a long walk for his health once a week,
so he says, but we guess it is to see bis
girl ; if the ice was out of the ereek
he could come borne on a float. -

A New Enterprise fop Tionesta.
Tionesta is soon to a have a now en
terprise that will prove a benefit in
more ways than one. Messrs. John
Cobb fe Co., have arrangements com
pleted for the erection of a mill on the
ground below the depot, where Derick
son & Go's mill formerly stood. It is
tho intention of tho now firm to man
ufucl uro all kinds of lumber, staves,
&c, from tho timber of our surround
ing country. They will mako staves
all the way from 14 to 30 inches in
length which they proposo to manu
facture iuto kegs, firkius, barrels, etc.,
for use in various branches of trade.
A patent dry kiln will be erected with
a capacity of several thousand Btaves,
and which will Bcason lumber in 36
hours, so that orders can be filled on
the shortest notice. Tho new deal
will furnish employment to at least a
score of men, besides giving those in
this vicinity who have small lots of
white oak and other timber a market
for their wares, at good prices and
spot cash. Iu connection with this
plan the firm has given Mr. E. S.
Iloyt a contract for manufacturing
shingles on Hunter Run and he will
move his mill forthwith to that loca
tion. Altogether this enterprise will be
quite a boom for our town, as, instead
of shipping the timber to other places
to be manufactured into the different
articles above referred to, it will all
be done here and the profits reaped by
home talent, as it were, much of which
will be spent and circulated among
our citizens. We wish the new deal
abundaut succcess, aud hope it will
receive tho eucouragement of all.
Nebraska Notes.
The ice left the creek here yesterday
without inflicting damage to property.
Rafting-iu will not begin for a week
or ten days. If there is any substance
in a groundhogs shadow, we are likely
to have another freeze-over, therefore
rafting would incur some risk.
St. Valentine's day was commemo
rated here by its usual influx of cari
catures. "Some, with sentimental
thought, invoked the muos; while
others, with vicious rhyme intent,
abuses." Such is life.
Mr. Evcrel Collins and Jake Kline
stiver are home for a short visit to
their parents, from Meadville, where
they are attending college.
We congratulate the young folks on
the pleasing addition to their society
in the person of Albie Gilfillan, who
will spend several months in the place.
A few years ago when Albie left us,
be was a mere boy ; now he is a young
tran who has no thought of letting the
grass grow under his feet. And he
wears oh, my! a mustache!
Mr. Abe Clark has just returned
from a weeks visit in Clarion Co.
Mrs. Frank Guiton of Fox Creek is
quite ill.
We were deprived of the usual Ber
vices last Sunday, on account of the
break-up, the road being rendered im
passable by iue. JoilN.
