-t- EDITOK. WEDXKSDAl MOnNlJiG, KOV. 4, Y&i. WASHINGTON LETTER. From our regular Correspondent.) Washimoto.v, D. CJ, Oct. 31, '85. First Assistant Postmaster General fttevctinon has lioeu very busy since his return from tbe West. Hi olfice is the mecca about which the politic.! pilgrims gulhcr for solace. Ilin desk is pile ! up with papers concerning the fourth-claps post offices t high that he in almost hid, and bis room is crowded coutiuutii'y. Thus far there have been about 7,500 fourth-class offices filled, leaving 44,000 yet to deal with. Of the presidential offices about 550 hare been filled aud about 1,800 are left. Treasurer Jordan is going to make a savace attack upon the Bland sil ver dollar in his annual report. He has about half a dozen clerks hard at work collecting matter for the report now, and he is himself at work night aud day. He is going over all the old records, and is having a document compiled, showing how much it has cost the government annually for the transportation of silver. The figures mount up astoundiugly. He is ac cumulating many other facts detrimen tal to the daddy dollar with which ho expects to surprise Congress, aud he will sum up the whole with an exhaus live argument to prove it impractica ble as currency aud detrimental to the financial welfare of the country. The correspondence accompanying Judgo Thoraan's resignation as a mem ber of the civil service commission is not very effusive on the President's part. Tbe resignation is accepted and is to take effect at once. Mr. Eaton's jplace also becomes vacant in a few -days, so that there must he an inline mediate reorganization of the commia sion. Dr. Gregory will stay awhile to induct the new members into their functions, but he, too, will leave the service when this duty has been per formed. It has been said that the President -will find difficulty in getting accepta ble men to fill the vacancies, but such a claim is born of a wish to see the failure of the commission and had no rubstantial basis in fact. At the prop er time the names will be announced, and it is not likely that they will prove to be culled from amoDg the small group to which it is said the choice is restricted. The positions to be filled are among the most honora ble ia the public service and the Pres ident will not be unable to find good men to take them. At the conference Tuesday after noon between Secretary Whitney, the assignees of John Roach, and the members of the advisory board, the Secretary called for a report from the assignees concerning the organization of the yards where the work is to be done, the compensation of the work men, etc. This report will be made in a few days, and the order to pro ceed with the work will probably then be given. The accounting officers of the Treas ury department 'a?e consented to de lay charging u , 'Ualarythe amount expended by Admiral Jouelt in entertaining visitors to the Tennes see at the New Orleans exposition, ac cording to the decision of tbe second controller, until the matter has been brought to tbe attention of Congress. The amount in questiou is only $400, but it is desired to have some definite action taken which may serve as a precedent in the future. The Secreta ry of the Navy now has the matter in charge, and through biro it will be brought to tbe attebtion of Congress. Admiral Jouett, when asked about it this morning, said be knew nothing ou tbe subject, as it was in the hands of the Secretary, but he was satisfied that Congress would have something to say about it this wicter. He added 'I have yet to find the mau in the United States who is not opposed to a position io which naval officers are .. laced when brought into relations "ith naval representatives of foreign ouo tries." L. Ik the people of Ohio want to find ut how popular John Sherman is and . t hear the imperative demand' from very direction that be shall be re- uroed to the Senate, tbey will keep ' p the idle talk of substituting anoth- : Republican candidate. THAT SAME OLD COON! ccmrai up sMixixci i York State Close with the Demo crats in the Lead ! OTHER STATES. The news from Pennsylvania is grand. The old .Keystoue rolls up over 30,000 majority for State Treas urer, Matthew S. Quay. This ia a gain of more than 10,000 over the' vote on State Treasurer two years ago, and is a most glorious victory. NEW YORK. The news from New York would in dicato that Hill, Democrat, was elect ed Governor by a small majority. These claims all come from a Demo cratic source, nnd consequently are not strictly reliable. VIRGINIA. The indications are that the Demo crats have as uttual carried Virginia, but by a greHtly reduced majority Fitzhugh Lee, of very unsavory mem ory, will domineer the State in the Governor's chair. MASSACHUSETTS. Massachusetts remains loyal to tbe Republicans, electing her Governor by 18,000 majority. And Little Forest ! She Gives Quay a Booming Majority and Elects the Whole Ticket. Judge Proper gets there Notwith standing the National's Lies. The result in Forest county on the Stt ticket couldn't be improved on, and on th county ticket it wan un comfortably close yet the Republicans win a signal victory. It was a cam paign of mud-slinging on the part of the Forest National, against a decent and honorable canvass on the part of Republicans in which the former came out as usual covered with mud with out the slightest glory. After awhile that editor ought to learn, if his skull is not too thick, that when he wants to beat a man for office he should champion his cause. That always turns decent people in the other di rection. The only barm he did the Republicans was in disgusting bis own party and driving it to the support of the Greenback candidate. Below we give the official vote iu the county. fr "1. ' I i i I DISTRICTS. i l ! State Treas. iA.
