MATTHEW S. QUAY,
of Reaver Coiinlv.
ICepiiblienn Comity Tiekrl.
For Associate Judge,
Hon. JOJIN A. PROPER.
Tor District Attorney,
I. M. CLARK, Esq.
Jons Sherman has succeeded in
Bearing the entire Democracy of Ohio
into a cul perspiration with just two
slump speeches. Sherman ia having
u good leal of fun this year.
If there ever was an Administra
tion that put a larger number of no
torious characters into office in six
months than the present one has, his
tory has forgotten all ahout it.
Hon. W. L. Scott, of Erie, is be
ing boomed for the Democratic nomi
nation for Governor of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Scott has a large bar'l but its con
tents would not be sufficient to spread
o thickly over the entire State ns in
ibis district last year. Venango Citi
zen. Somebody has started the report
that John Kelly says he is "feeling
pretty well, thauk you," and proposes
almost immediarely to take a hand iu
politics again. The result is that
there is a general breaking out of
goose flesh among the New York Dem
ocrats, especially the candidates for
Governor. Mr. Kelly is such a con
foundedly cross-eyed politician when
lie ia in good condition and lively,
that none of them can guee where he
is going to strike when he hauls off
with his hammer.
Mr. IIensel is in the victorious
-vein again, and also prophetic again,
lie is "earnestly at work," and prom
ises to make "an aggressive campaign."
And still further says he is "going to
fight to win." That is nothing new
from Mr. Hensol. He '13 always "ear
nestly at work," always promising "an
aggressive campaign," and always
"fighting to win.'' It will be remem
bered how earnestly he told the peo
ple of New Jersey last year all about
it, and how be tolled up in Pennsyl
vania a majority of 81,000 for Blaine.
Go in Mr. Ileosel.
Governor Hill of New York is
picking up the Democratic delegates
and his nomination is reasonably sure.
He ia the accident of an accident
nominated for Lieutenant Governor
with no thought of his ever becoming
Governor, and elected even to the
less place only through Republican
blunders. He is the smallest and
weakest man who has been in the ex
ecutive chair of New York since My
rom Clark's day before the war, and
with a good candidate tho Republi
cans ought to have no difficulty in
beating him. Phila. Press.
It may be taken for granted that
the Republican senators will not
merely pass upon the President's ap
pointments, but will inquire into their
character and fitness. They will not
pursue a factious and obstructive
J. E. WENK,
I tourae; they will treat the Adminia
' tration with fairness and liberality;
j but where removals have been made
1 without cauBe and appointments roade
! without merit, and both on false
grounds so that the public interests
have suffered, the Republican senators
will exercise their prerogative of re
viewing the action. The session ia not
likely to be dull at the Senate end.
Washington Court House, the
county seat of Fayatte county, Ohio,
a wealthy town of about five thousand
people, was almost literally wiped out
by a cyclone on Wednesday night.
The storm seemed to 6tart at Seymour,
Ind., passing Cambridge city and
Dublin in the same state and Tippe
canoe and Dayton, Ohio, not beiug
particularly destructive destructive
until it reached Washington and
Bloomiogburg where its force appears
to have been Bpent. The loss of life
does not appear to have been great,
though wonderful storiea are told of
families carried various distances and
safely lauded, while nothing was left
of the houses they had been in. The
loss of property ia estimated at 81,
000,000. When will the philosophy
of the cyclone be comprehended?
There is a growing feeling in this
country that the Utitisli preea wants
the enrth. Their Presidential ticket
was elected in this country last year,
and a parly was put in power which is
lustile to the selfish American doc
trine of protection to American indus
try yet the British press growls be
cause Vise President Hendricks says
a good word that means nothing, lr
the Irish Nationalists. Aro they not
just a little greedy? Or docs the con
tract between them aud the American
free trailers, in their estimation, in
volve a complete surrender by the
Democrat", of everything; even to
personal freedom of speech even, be
guiling speech like the Vice Presi
dent's? Senator Sherman delivered an
other speech yesterday iu Ohio, in
which he ventured to refer to and de
nounce the crime against the ballot
which prevails iu the majority of the
Southern states. It will now be in or
der for the entire Mugwump and Dem
ocratic press, especially the Mug
wump, to join in a chorus of derisiou
and cry "bloody shirt." The dough
face element which for half a century
insisted that no one should ppeafc dis
respectfully of slave holders or slav
ery seems to be again coming to the
front in the North, and is seeking to
cry down those who see aught to con
demn in the conspiracy agaiost hu
man rights by which half the people
of the South are systematically dis
franchised, riiila. Press.
