A few days ago Dr. Halderman was examining the timber on bis tract of laml in Forest county, which ad joins the Warren county line, and discovered a tree that is a curiosity and puzzle to naturalists, in the shape of a pine and hemlock tree growing from one stump. The stump or base of the tree is about five feet through or fifteen feet in circumference, and the forks of the tree are about six feel from, the ground. The line of de- markation between the two trees springing from the same stump can only bu traced with the aye by the difference in the wood, one-half of the stump being hemlock aod the other of pin.. Each of the trees is fully two reel o diameter, equal in size ana J about eighty feet high. Tbe joint lvu uu mo iup oi a m below the Warren county line, above Samuel Davirlsoo's Mill, a short dis tance below the mouth of Queen Creek, where it joi'is Hickory. In a thickly settled country tbie tree would be a great curiosity. About Mr. Hoyt's Letler. Balltown, A pi. 21st, '84. Editor Commonwealth : In your issue of 17lh you claim that the week before, too late for publication, a communication was received from me. Also yon state that in my eagerness I forwarded the communication to the Republican before I knew that it would be pub- ished in your paper. Now the facts are as follows : March 31st I mailed you the communication. I have your etter dated Apl. 5th, stating that the letter was before you but received too late to publish in your issue of the 3d; also stating that your paper was too small to allow of a discus sion in in columns between members of its own party. Now, in regard to not waiting to know that it would not be published n your paper, tc., I received your etter of 5th, virtually declining to publish it on the 7th, giving all the time necessary to send the communi cations to the Republican for the is sue of the 16th. I do not wish to believe these mis statements were made purposely, but hope it was an oveBight upon your part, aod hope you will accordingly correct the errors. Respectfully, E. S. Hoyt. OIL NOTES.
