Our ingenious Democratic states
man are nothing if not 8 mart. They
are too smart for anything, and like
the boy who was so 3tuart that he hurt
himself, they generally get their fin
ger pinched in the door. They have
cat down the postoffice appropriation
bill far below a sufficient amount, and
th8y know it. But the game is, that
' the Senate i? to make restoration by
amendments, when the House will
go through the forms of a confeieuce
-committee and yield, as it under com
pulsion. Then they will far to the
people: "See how our efforts at econ
omy are balked by the Senate! We
can do nothing until we have both
Houses and the President." Tben
they imagine the people will elect
their President. Was ever such self-
.stultification Known 7 lhey assume
Jthe people to be fools, and their trick
has not even the merit of novelty.
J or twenty vnars whenever they have
Lad a chance they bate played the
same game. Did it ever win? Nev
er. And yet time and again they
forget the fate of farmer enterprises
and try the same silly game. They
are too smart by half. The infusion
of a little honesty into their purpose
would be worth more to them than
all their cmartnese. But they do not
have the power to comprehend an
boneit purpose.
Henry Wattersojj is prophetic,
He says: "If the Democrats beat the
Morrison bill the Democratic party will
go the way the old V big party went
So. Th great revenue reformer hat
made up his mind that for this time
too, the hope of Democracy will be
nipped in the bud.
The "party is united" at latest
accounts. 1 he protection element of
the party is to be sent to the bow-wows,
and the tree traders for this year will
Adopt the Ohio idea of incidental
protection. Oh, Democracy !
